Welcome to 'History Hotspots' today highlighting Birkenhead Priory and Museum. The priory was established as a Benedictine Monastery around 1150 AD and today it remains one of the oldest standing buildings in the Merseyside area !!
Following the dissolution of Monasteries it closed in the year of 1536 and the resident monks were moved away. Today the site is listed as a scheduled monument with many listed buildings including the Chapter House dated to circa 1150 AD. The site is open to the public and entry to the site is free. Please see details within this short feature for contacting Birkenhead Priory and for opening times etc.

We lived around the corner from the Priory and my friend lived in one of the houses which were directly opposite .We played there as children always loved the history of the ferry crossing by the monks .So ferry across the mersey was from our end and not Liverpool which is nice to know

Beautiful piece of film. The intact Undercroft and monk’s refectory can also be visited at Birkenhead Priory for those who would like to visit. Many thanks to James Balme for his excellent work.

Was it Henry VIII who destroyed it??

It was his enforcement of dissolution that ended the priory ...
