They had to surrender though as they were quickly over powered by the German forces within days. It was only applicable to POWs and to ensure a steady supply they stayed constantly at war with a few other tribes (each tribe would take some prisoners from the other and then sacrifice them, it ensured social order). The Spanish literally TOOK ADVANTAGE of this never-ending conflict between tribes in order to pit them against each other and assume possession of the land.
