Furthermore, a lot of people don't realize that "states' rights" were legitimate arguments at the time, along with voicing gripes about the government making overriding decisions that weren't Constitutional. But that argument later got hijacked by Democrat politicians, who used fear of the then-recent Haitian Slave Revolt (where they outright slaughtered every single white person in Haiti, no matter if they hadn't owned slaves, even down to the last baby) to push for their goals of keeping their "property" (Southern Democrats were all extremely wealthy plantation owners, and they regularly got their family members into political positions).
the residential school system was to give them a "western style education" it failed horribly because they let the catholics run the schools bad idea, second it wasn't that much trying to erase culture just it worked out that way unfortunately.
