As no one has been alive since 2000 bc we don't know when exactly the word "Afghan" originated but according to our ancient text we still have to this day, we see that the word Afghan was used in the letter of Shapur 1 of Sassanid. the world was written in the ancient Pahlavi language "αβγανανο" which translates to "Abgân" meaning horse riders or horse breeders. This is because the first people known to domestic horses were the Yamaha people ( the ancestors of the Aryans) in the steppe of Europe and Central Asia. After all, we don't have the rosetta stone for the Avesta language, or pahlavi language thanks to Muslims burning the libraries, we don't know the meaning of the words so some scholars thought this word could also mean asvakan( the Gandara people). the word "stan" came from its indo European origin which correlates with "stand" meaning place or land. so the land of Afghans or the land of Aryans. Why did the Pashtuns use Afghan, not Pashtunistan? because Pashtuns are a subgroup of the Afghans.
