The 30 pin connector for the iPods and early iPhones was really Apple's attempt at future proofing their devices. If you look at the schematics of the 30 pin connector, it had compatibility with all sorts of possible connections that were around at the time. (It could support S-video, of all things.) I remember reading somewhere that either two or four of the pins were not connected to anything, they were just there to allow Apple to add compatibility in the future. This seems a bit extreme, but you have to remember that at the time (2003-2004), USB was still relatively new, and no one really knew which computer connector would become ubiquitous in the future. We all know that USB would, but that wasn't really that clear at the time.

2016 was the year: -Apple removed the headphone jack -Made an Apple Pencil that sticks out of the charging port -Made the Magic Mouse charge from the bottom -Removed a TON of ports from the MacBook Pro and left only USB C -Sold a lot of annoying dongles They were doing something wrong that year

Why has Thunderbolt 3 USB Type-C connector?

I have a 2013 MacBook Pro and have never used the thunderbolt 2 ports but I have used every other one heavily

Macsafe port? 8+ years ago, the connector caught fire while connected to the MacBook Pro... The transformer occasionally did not power off when the port is disconnected...That caused the fire which also killed the MacBook Pro...

Not one of my Apple devices is from after 2010. Apple has become a fashion company and Jony Ive removed as many ports as he could so he could rub the smooth surfaces and get a woody.

I understand the simplicity and making it easier but at the same time they made it harder due to now needing an adapter. Been a loyal Mac user for years and still have my 2012 MacBook Pro as my main laptop but I’m starting to look for a replacement and can’t see myself getting another MacBook with the need for adapters and no SSD upgradability

I tested out 3.5 mm adaptor to lightning doesn’t sound as good not as much details everything sounds more compressed for example a band sounds like they’re close together almost squished together in comparison to normal headphone jacks on older Apple products

My sister still has her 2015 MacBook Pro. It’s lasted 6 years through college and graduate school, and has tons of ports, MagSafe, and the glowing logo. That was the height of MacBook

just came to say the iphone 7 was not the first smartphone ever made without a headphone jack, that distinction belongs to the motorola z, but it had a good reason for not having it, the phone was just shy of 5 mm thick and the jack wouldnt fit. it was released 6 months prior to the iphone 7

Actually, you can still charge and listen to music on the iPhone 7 if you buy an adapter that you plug in to make you have 2 lighting ports.

But 30pin wasnt only on Old iPads, iPod touches and iPhone 2g, 3g and 4, it was in that time on every tablet/phone, my sister has 30 pin on her Samsung tablet

You left out the proprietary display connectors and legacy stuff (ADB et al)

MagSafe was now able to be used on iPhone 13 that is still under development and has not be able to get.

“Apple is, and will continue to be making the best decision for the future of technology.” I literally had to replay that thrice to make sure that I was hearing it correctly. You cant honestly believe that countless dongles and the abandonment of legacy technology is the correct step forward. Im not saying that “every motherboard needs every port devised by man”, that’d be stupid. But in the next 5 years at most, I can see the iPhone becoming a portless device. It already charges wirelessly, the only thing the dongle is used for is data transfer, and I’m sure that they’re going to either find a way to make that wireless like the charging, like you put your phone on your MacBook and it connects or whatever, or they straightup say that you’ll need to transfer files over iCloud.

You forgot the Apple display connector and many others. Also, there was controversy over the iMac G3’s lack of floppy drive over the CD-ROM drive.

8:04 actually, Oppo was the first brand who removed the headphone jack, four years before the iPhone 7. It was the Oppo R5!

I do a ton of photography and the lack of an SD card slot is so not an issue. I carry a dongle, it's simple enough. I often don't even put them straight on my computer but use my phone to upload photos to my Lightroom CC.

There's conflicting information, at 2:45 you say that Thunderbolt 2 was first featured in the MacBook Pro line and then at 3:32 you say that the first time it was features was actually on a ASUS laptop.

I actually prefered mag safe instead USB to charge macbook. So, of you trip over it, it doesn't do any damage to the port. The downside is when you lose the cable, you know I mean right?

Sad to see no mention of ADC which personally I think was genius and I was disappointed when it was discontinued. That and they put them on wonderful displays. Many people still use them with an adapter now.

Does anyone miss serial ports and plugging in your mouse and keyboard with ps/2 ports? No because they were replaced by something that could do both jobs and more, and the industry adapted by making new things that work with new ports. Now we have usb mice and keyboards, or better yet Bluetooth. There are already usb-c monitors and all sorts of other peripherals. Sure we can go a few iterations with each port shape to see how much data we can squeeze through like usb3.x but at the end of the day sometimes it’s best to move on. Yes it would’ve been nice if there was some more crossover period on the MacBook Pro where they had maybe 2-4 usb-c and 2 usb3 but we have to let go of the past in order to move forward.

Don't forget the Apple Serial Port with older Macs to connect mice, external disk drives, and other peripherals. Obviously that's old school, but it just shows Apple's history with proprietary connectors.

Yeah the headphone jack being removed to make room for the vibrator is bullshit. There's literally just plastic where the headphone jack would be.

Well, HTC Magic had no headphone jack, was a smartphone and released in 2009, so iPhone 7 was not the first smartphone with no headphone jack.

Actually the very first Android (Tmobile G1/HTC Dream) didn't have a headphone jack, it had a propriety connector and a 3.5mm jack in the box. The difference is it accepted mini USB from the get go.

One thing could be because pre type c period that Apple would want a charging cable that can be plugged in either way and so the company wouldn’t have went the way of micro usb. And also it is so weird that we know that Apple removed the 3.5 millimeter headphone jack but even though it is the latest phone from Sony they never yet as of 2024 had removed it from their phones.

It’s not as simple as they think because in order to plug in multiple devices you have to remember all these dongles and adaptors, the previous MacBooks had everything built in and no adapter required ( usually) Plug A goes in Port A, Plug B goes into Port B etc. each one looked different and self explanatory.

Good thing I kept my MacBookPro from 2012, it has all the ports I need, forget USB-C! Not to mention my iPhone 6, I can charge while using headphones so I don’t need money on any adapters for my MacBook or iPhone.

One thing I don’t like about MagSafe is it sometimes unreliable even know my charging port on my MacBook Airs clean it sometimes doesn’t make a connection properly and my macbook doesn’t charge

The T-Mobile G1, the very first Android phone did not have a headphone jack.

Why make things complicated? My Dell XPS 13 9343 (which is smaller than the Macbook Air with the same screen size) has a regular DC barrel connector. Positive, negative, and 1-wire ID. Barrel connectors are inherently symmetrical and will fit in any direction, and the trip protection is not necessary because replacement chargers don't cost $75.

You have forgotten the propietary connectors inside the new Mac Pro. You have to buy a dongle just to connect an internal hard drive.

Even though I really hate Apple and how they use proprietary ports, I gotta admit that magsafe is kinda cool and a fairly good idea.

I think the thunderbolt connecter looks a lot like a USB C connecter.

I find the lightning connector to be a good one, I personally feel its more durable than even the USB C.

I'm questioning their idea of simplicity what they did now is a dongle madness. Why not they should release a dongle which has all in one connector? More durable of course.

Why would anyone WANT micro usb.. nearly everyone has bent or broken the tips, or they end up loose in the port.. lightning is stronger, more reliable and definitely feels like a better quality in the ports..

I'm one of those who truly believe that Apple's main reason for removing most of the Mac's ports was due to money. The whole "moving the industry forward" excuse is garbage.

I don't use Apple products but I feel like a test subject for Apple while watching this video.
