A fantastical Warhammery version of Circus Maximus.. sounds like fun to me. Soon as the command to ignore the cat filtered through my brain, it was all but impossible to do .. ah cats, so mysterious, so bewitching .. so adorable.
Those Battlemaster plastics fleshed out the rear ranks of my WHFB armies and were one of the few sources of chaos warriors with halbreds for quite a while.
Thanks so much for researching and digging into the history of this lost game. Fascinating stuff. I had no idea there was a 4th game planned. It looks like it could've been alot of fun. If it had been released, we would have seen many of these chariots grace the warhammer battlefields. People talk about GW going mainstream now, with easy to build kits, computer games and potential Henry Cavil movies. But from memory, Warhammer was at the peak of mainstream during the MB collaboration. Even Mums were playing HeroQuest and Space Crusade! It did for Warhammer what the Wii did for Nintendo!
Totally agree! There’s always been a mainstream aspect whether that’s the MB games, LOTR, or just tapping into successful fantasy & sci-fi movies and books for inspiration. Not to mention that we all benefit when there’s these routes into this glorious hobby - after all we all started as kids in the toy store who knew nothing about Warhammer but chose HeroQuest over Twister for Christmas!
Interesting video. Always good to learn something new. The three existing games are amazing in my opinion. I think Battle masters is worth a good look just for the sheer number and quality of miniatures that came with it. I actually bought a second Battle Masters set a couple of years ago and have a dream of one day somehow setting up both mats for an epic battle to end all battles.
It’s surprising just how timeless those games are, they’re still great fun! I didn’t spend much time with Battle Masters, though I did marvel at my friends copy - it was impressive!
That was fascinating, particularly how the miniatures inspired subsequent designs! Like you I had never heard of any of this, it was like some kind of Warhammer Mario Kart, so very cool! Love the videos, keep it up, all this GW history is awesome 😀
Very fair point! Just some gentle mockery for the least successful of the MB x GW children. One of these days I’ll get round to a proper video on it as it was a noble effort!
I had a citadel chariot for the woodelves in metal, took it in mail order from uk in the 90', had a falconeer a spear wielder elf sorcerer an archer and the horse handler. never found any rules to play in WFB, now make more sense lol ty Jordan
Battle Masters is the only one I had ... Heroquest is still the one that got away. BM took up the entire living room floor between all the couches. Glorious goofiness!
@@jordansorcery Well yes, I was listening to you and watching the cat, because cat ... I used to have one that regularly interrupted 40k games (cue shouts of 'SQUIGGOTH!!')
The rules in Journal could have been, at least partially, the rules for Battle Wizards. For all we know someone at gW found the rough draft of the unproduced games, asked "Are we going to do anything with this, lads?" and then released it in Journal. If were playing with "falling off" rules I want vehicle 3. It's got some nice safety railings.
The caged chariot looks vaguely like the Snotling Pump wagon from WF 4th ed. Only caged and not wooden walled... or filled with tiny green Snotlings....
Me too, absolutely loved the Journal - I remember building an arbites force using their rules and attempting to build a Norse army too. Not to mention how much great Warhammer Quest material they put out!
Oooff! You just dissed Battlemasters!! Lol, Seriously though, great vid, I do think Battlemasters is a bit underrated though..... I had so much fun with my mates playing it back in the day
Absolutely! That’s a great way of thinking about it, I’d definitely play Warhammer Mario Kart. Suspect they’d be throwing something more deadly than turtle shells though!
I'd like to request a video where you discuss where you came from, in terms of YT. Similar IMO to GoobertownHobbies, you've apparently dropped out of the sky with an amazing and professional YT channel. Are you coming from another media source, do you have other YT channels, what led up to this? I am completely fascinated with HOW it's made. The techniques and tools and the JOURNEY. Thanks.
I think this is a really good idea, I’ll give it some thought! I did study film at uni, but have been doing professional data science work for much of my career. Just wanted to try my hand at something more creative for a change! I’m glad it’s coming across well, and I’d be happy to share more behind the scenes and journey stuff as I progress!
I'm only kidding, Battle Masters was an epic effort tbf, it always impressed me how much they got in that box! It just wasn't as successful as its stable mates in the end
@@jordansorcery As a boy under 9, I think i was closer to 6, Battle Masters left a HUGE impression on me. Knights, orcs, ogres, cannons - fantasy battle! I played it at my cousins' house one of the first times we went over to their house and bugged them to play it every single time thereafter. Guess I will have to pull out my copy acquired a couple of months ago to see if it still holds up or if nostalgia wins the day once again. Who's in?!
I can’t help but imagine something awesome, especially given how much fun their other collaborations are! I’m definitely keen to give those Journal rules a go
What the what? My tiny cat mind is blown! 🤯 I wonder if the release of those eight plastic battle wizards in 1995 was connected to this abandoned game in some way? (See White Dwarf 186, which came with one random free wizard. Later they were rereleased in the 'toy box' range as FT03. They're in the same style as the WHQ and Talisman 3rd ed minis from that period, and look similar to those metal prototypes in the video.) That set of wizards always seemed a bit random to me. Usually, plastics in those days were directed at basic troops you needed a lot of, not one-off characters. Plastic characters were more of a thing in the boxed board games. Maybe the wizards were far enough along in production when the proposed MB game was dropped that GW decided to release them anyway? The wizards even had their own logo/title (shown on the White Dwarf magazine cover), "WIZARDS", which seems a bit over the top just for a batch of figures. Just maybe a prototype title for the boardgame? Of course, the wizards as released were mostly human, which doesn't match some of those chariots, though there was a dark elf and a chaos bloke in there. Might be a red herring. 🤔 It's also interesting that the final expansion for UK Heroquest, Wizards of Morcar, included a set of four plastic evil wizard characters. It's an odd expansion by HQ standards, with lots of interesting extras in general (new spells, henchmen to hire, etc), but only a handful of actual quests. Maybe that inspired the planned Battle Wizards game? Or maybe that expansion was made from bits and pieces borrowed from the early concepts for the BW game? The plot thickens ...
I think those plastic wizards may even have been from Talismsb and it’s expansions, but they definitely could be related. And that’s a fascinating suggestion about Wizards of Morcar, there’s definitely something unusual about the design of that set compared to the other expansions. And I wouldn’t be surprised if GW snuck more unreleased minis and ideas into other stuff over the years!
@@jordansorcery D'oh! I forgot about the expansions for 3rd edition Talisman--I was only thinking of the base game. You're right--some of those wizards come from the expansions. Don't mind me ... nothing to see here ...
