How Bearing Invented | History of Bearing.
In this video, I explain how bearings were invented, which will help design engineers understand them in a more meaningful way later in this series of Bearings Master Classes.
Here is brief History:
Chapter 1
Around 3000 BC, in ancient Egypt,
people had a problem. They needed to move massive stones to build the pyramids. Then They used round wooden logs under the stones to make them slide more easily, like the first bearings. To make things even smoother, they used water as a lubricant.
Chapter 2
The first known discovery of a ball bearing type device was found in the roman empire about 40 AD.
And this was a simple rotating table. With balls underneath. It assumes to
allow people to eating at the table to simply rotate the table to get at other foods.
Chapter 3
In 15th century, a brilliant mind named Leonardo da Vinci drew sketches that looked like modern ball bearings.
He was an artist also an inventor and his work were a big step toward better bearings. But the problem was the contact and friction between balls.
Chapter 4
In 17th century, Galileo Galilei described the cage for balls.
Chapter 5
In 1794 (United Kingdom)
Philip Vaughan, a British inventor and ironmaster, patent the first modern ball-bearing design
Chapter 6
In August 1869 Europe, a smart person, a Parisian bicycle mechanic
named Jules Suriray patent the radial-style ball bearing.
The bearings were then fitted to the winning bicycle ridden by James Moore in the world's first bicycle road race, Paris-Rouen, in November 1869
Chapter 7
In 1898, a man named Henry Timken invented roller bearings.
These were like magic because they could carry really heavy things and handle bumps better.
Trains and cars started using them, changing transportation a lot.
And in same year, Henry Timken, visionary and innovator in carriage manufacturing, patented the tapered roller bearing.
Chapter 8
In 1883, Germany
Friedrich Fischer, founder of FAG, developed an approach for milling and grinding balls of equal size and exact roundness by means of a suitable production machine, which set the stage for the creation of an independent bearing industry.
Chapter 9
And in early 20th century
The modern, self-aligning design of ball bearing is attributed to Sven Wingquist of the SKF ball-bearing manufacturer in 1907. when he was awarded Swedish patent No. 25406 on its design.
Chapter 10
In 20th century, when we started exploring space during the Space Age,
We needed special bearings. Scientists invented new materials like ceramics and super-strong metals for space bearings.
These bearings had to survive the vacuum and extreme temperatures of space.
Chapter 11
Now, in the 2000s, we're in the Digital Age. Bearings have become "smart" with sensors They can tell us when they need maintenance, helping machines work well.

Why we select higher kw power for design purpose then actual kw power transmitted by application for belt drive or any other application
@mastermechanicaldesign
@mastermechanicaldesign 11 месяцев назад
Hi Akash, We select the Higher capacity of the input power device then the actual requirement power, because of the following reasons 1. We can't calculate all the loading factors and energy losses exactly. Like heat loss, Noise, Friction etc. during power transmission. So we consider some extra power for these losses. 2. Sometimes in real world applications, there could be unexpected High Loading we call it pick load. So again we have to take some extra power. 3. We can use High capacity input power devices for low required power. Even tho we can adjust the power according to required power. But we can't increase the power of the input device beyond its rated power if high power will be required at any point of time.
