From 1994-2002 I filmed and edited a program called Video Focus for Time Warner Cable National Division. This was a special edition from August of 1998 celebrating 50 years of cable television.

I was 5 years old when we got cable in 1955. It was 5 channels and the cable plant was RG-11/U coax. Later on, I was friends with Warren Fribley, the guy who owned the cable system. He told lots of stories. I also knew Harold Hammel who came up with the amplifier tilt control, which compensated for coax losses on the higher channels by raising the amplifier gain as the frequency went up.
United Kingdom Rediffusion was the trading name of Broadcast Relay Service Ltd, formed in 1928. in the 1930s, Rediffusion began manufacturing TV sets and supplying "Piped TV", an early form of cable TV, service to its customers, until the cessation of television broadcasts during the Second World War.
I was gonna make a snide remark about how these folks had no idea how their industry was going to be turned upside down.... but as you point out, this one dude over here is a bloody genius.
No kidding. Poor guy was probably a lone voice fighting against people who struggled to look ahead. Like the lady talking about phone company’s marketing being “overkill”. Anyone in communications has to keep looking forward. We’re always on the way towards obsolescence unless we’re looking ahead and ready to change lanes.
I miss time warner cable so much spectrum is very different I remember the box from time warner had buttons on it to change the channels u loved that spectrums don't have it
Here in Australia it is horrible. the amount of ads now is crazy. I swear when Cable tv first came here to Australia in 95/96 there were no ads only of other shows on the channel and you probably got 2 or 3 per ad break now cable tv here is infested with ads and the price hikes and removal of shows or complete channels is getting out of hand. what makes it worse is there is only one cable company here so they have a monopoly.
We got cable in the 90s the frecken Disney Channel was scramble our cable provider made it payed channel. But now day got have cable or satellite TV in my area to get all. Local channels. But I watch on my tablet via cable internet lol
@@creedyfbaby it was scrambled disney was back then. and you had pay and put something on your line to get channel think cable company was TCI or something like that then AT&T bought them and went someone other cable provider and now it Mediacom
The other day my son and I were watching 90s TV shows on RU-vid and I told him that tv looked better back then compared to the reruns shown online because we were essentially watching a tape (or a tape of a tape) with maybe 1/4 the original resolution that may have degraded before it was digitized. It would be nice to see a perfect representation of how live tv appeared 25 years ago. Straight 480i to the face.
The capital was the reality. Study Comcast, Turner Advertising - same as RCA etc. Cable is just another "product" of media. Why ask the bottom of the contractors employees - it's like interviewing the newspaper boy about the business of advertising?
