Episode #3
The History of Haiti: Roots
by Mikelson Toussaint-Fils
After the arrival of the Spaniards in 1492, the native Taino population dwindled due to the hard work and diseases brought by the Europeans. To exploit the island's resources, the Spanish and French forcibly brought African slaves to Haiti. The slaves rebelled and in 1804 declared their independence, founding the world's first black republic. The majority of black Haitians today are of West African descent, with significant roots among the Fon, Akan, Yoruba, Igbo, Kongo, and Mandinka peoples.
In this episode, we will take a detour through Africa to better understand the ethnic origins and history of the Africans who will take possession of the island of Haiti after the Battle of Vertière.

Fon people are the basis of Haitian Ancestry. The Kongos came later due to civil war and were mostly placed in the Northern region of Haiti. The Southern region have higher Ancestry from present day Nigeria. My father's side is Kongo, specifically mbundu, and my mother's side is Fon/Yoruba/Igbo/Edo. My mom side of the family have roots on Southern Haiti and my Father's side of the family have roots in Northern Haiti. Most diaspora can trace to many African tribes but certain regions will have more of a certain tribe than others. It wouldn't make sense and say Haitians are ___, when we vary by region. Same can be said about African Americans.

It could be because the practice of slavery in the Americas started in Hayti and that's where the original prisoners of war from Africa, the Americas and the Caribbean (the kings, queens, chiefs, warriors, etc) with the sacred knowledge were sent. The 21 Nachons/Nations/Tribes which included the Taino became one at the Bwa Kayiman ceremony.

@@K7SVN I was speaking on Haitians specifically. And you cannot say that ''most slaves came from X, Y and Z'' for the totality of the slave trade. It depends on the time frame and the category of slaves as well as the region of the country that they were enslaved in. This goes not only for Haiti but for the entire Americas actually. I've researched a lot on the African origins of Haitians. You'll get lots of info from the vodou religion (at least 21 ethnic groups contributed to it), slave ship logs and slaveholder logs. Africans were brought to Haiti from West Africa, Central Africa and a bit from South-East Africa (Mozambique, Madagascar). Of course some ethnic groups were more represented than others depending on the era (for example, during the 2nd half of the slave trade, 60% of the African-born slaves (as opposed to the slaves and affranchis born in the colony) came from the Kongo Kingdom. While during the first half of the slave trade, it was West Africans that were the majority. A few examples of African ethnic groups that I came across : Fon/Arada (Dahomey Kingdom in current day Benin), Kongo Kingdom (DRC, Congo Brazza, Angola, Gabon), Yoruba and Igbo (Benin and Nigeria), Bambara (I think it's Senegal?), Mandigo (Sierra Leone), Susu (Sierra Leone), Wolof (Senegal), Fulani (nomadic group dispersed throughout West and Central Africa), etc etc. And that's just on the top of my head. There were many more.

@elo6550 oficial name La Isla La Española does not need translation! Hispaniola is a different term or just foreign pronunciation.
@elo6550
@elo6550 Год назад
@@neliathen638 Remember that place names can change from one language to another. For example, the Greeks call their country "Hellas" or "Hellada", but we call it Greece after the name the Romans gave it, which was "Graecia". Koreans call their peninsula "Hangug" or "Choson", not Korea, we call it Korea because of a mispronunciation of Goryeo, a dynasty that ruled the peninsula during the time of Marco Polo (who recorded the name) and which took its denomination of the oldest Kingdom of Koguryo (One of the ancient Samhan or Three Kingdoms of Korea). And in this case, the name given to the island in Spanish was "La Española" from the beginning, that's true, but Bartolomé de Las Casas and Pedro Mártir de Anglería popularized the Latin "Hispaniola", which means "Spain in diminutive ". And due to this popularization, "Hispaniola" became the name used in the rest of the European and non-European languages, while La Española was restricted to Spanish.
@neliathen638
@neliathen638 Год назад
@elo6550 we stayed as it was given and registered La Isla La Espanola; it does not change our historical registration process. If other cultures do, we do not have to do the same.
@elo6550
@elo6550 Год назад

@@418Tinkerbell We have been taught that Haitian Creole is simply broken French. However, anyone who is familiar with African linguistics can hear the influence of African languages. We can see this African heritage not only in the grammar structure but in the vocabulary as well. African languages, such as Fongbe/Fon and Kikongo are very much alive in the Haitian Creole language. Because of cultural connections between Haiti and Benin, there is a large number of Vodou-related words that are etymologically connected to Fongbe. Also, many African slaves transported in the slave trade spoke Kikongo, one of the Bantu Languages spoken by the Kongo people. Its influence can be seen in many creole languages in the diaspora. Marasa comes from mabasa, or twins, in the Kikongo language.

We also learnt about African American history. Some of my text books in high school were: The Making of The West Indies and The People who Came books 1,2 and 3. Then in Literature, we read about the Maroons of Jamaica etc. Caribbean History and Literature classes DO teach our history. I live in the US but bought those text books for my children to use for research purposes and writing papers while they were attending school in the United States.

Hell no, we did not come from monkeys! We came from the greatest men who ever lived. We came from Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. What they are not telling you is that all of these different tribes are descendants of the 12 tribes of ISRAEL. We are the true Israelites that the bible speak of. We went into slavery due to breaking the covenants our ancestor made with the Most High god. We prefer idolatry over the one true God. You can see this in the love of voodoo(Read Deuteronomy 28:15-68) Deuteronomy 28:47-48a The Message (MSG) Because you didn’t serve GOD, your God, out of the joy and goodness of your heart in the great abundance, you’ll have to serve your enemies whom GOD will send against you. Life will be famine and drought, rags and wretchedness; then he’ll put an iron yoke on your neck until he’s destroyed you. The following is a prophecy about our slavery. Deuteronomy 28:68 “And the LORD shall bring thee into Egypt again with ships, by the way whereof I spake unto thee, Thou shalt see it no more again: and there ye shall be sold unto your enemies for bondmen and bondwomen, and no man shall buy (no man can redeem us) you.” Haitians are Israelites. Amos 9:7 KJV - KJV Are ye not as children of the Ethiopians unto me, O children of Israel? saith the LORD. Isaiah 29:22 KJV Therefore thus saith the LORD, who redeemed Abraham, concerning the house of Jacob, Jacob shall not now be ashamed, neither shall his face now wax pale. Isaiah 3:16-26. Israelites have always been black and will remain black and we are it.

Yes Africa is the black nation, some blacks refused to accept being descendants of that continent due to the negativity being portrayed of that continent. If Africa would been the industrial nation the world would look in a different way even black people themselves. I believe with all natural resources in that continent it is there for reason. Black peoples shouldn’t be ashamed to be whom they are, it starts within us to respect and to value ourselves!
