War does not spare anyone. Most of all, those who cannot take care of themselves. That is why USAVA does not stop fighting for the rescue of animals in Ukraine. And it's not just about pets.
One of the winning mini-grant projects implemented by the association under the BASED program is veterinary care and medicines for horses evacuated from the war zones and occupied territories.
Currently, the village of Sudobychi in Rivne region has become their home, where the animals were brought from Kyiv, Luhansk, Donetsk, and Mykolaiv regions.
"I've been traveling around Ukraine with my horses for 9 years in search of shelter," says Kateryna Stepanova, the owner of the horses. "Among my charges are horses from Borodyanka, whose stables completely burned down when the occupiers came. The animals were released and ran for two months. Then they were caught and brought here on an evacuation flight. There is Hephaestus, an equine-assisted therapy horse who helped people and worked with children. Now we are providing assistance to him."
After the stress, the animals needed the help of veterinarians: from basic hoof cleaning to medical care and consultation. Almost all of them had gastritis, joint problems and many other diagnoses.
The treatment, work of veterinarians and necessary medicines were funded through a mini-grant from USAVA and support from AVMF. Also, as part of the mini-grant for good deeds from USAVA and AVMF, the animals underwent hygiene procedures. In total, the project was implemented for UAH 34,400.
"We are very grateful to USAVA for responding to such non-standard assistance, because we are not veterinarians ourselves. We were looking for doctors to help us. We are very grateful that they responded," says horse owner Oksana Abramova.
