So you're about half way there we new the uranium bomb would work because we tested it. The Plutonium bomb was a mystery because in theory it worked, but we(we being the USA) didn't know if it worked in practice. We dropped the second bomb because they thought we only had the one. We showed them they were incorrect and it won us the war. I don't feel bad about it. Better than invading mainland Japan.

Mexico was easily much stronger than the US at that time. Texas was a it own country. California and other areas out west were part of Mexico and we were headed towards a civil war. In the !850s & 60s there was a rebel uprising against the Shgunate government in protest of foreign involvement in Japan that was put down by the Britain, France, Holland, and token involvement in the US, but if anything this strengthens the existing Japanese government. Fun history fact, the logic for dropping the bomb *was* to save laves. To end the war with Japan it was estimated to cost both sides an estimated 500,000 lives vs. the bomb being dropped which was roughly 50,000 (of course this doesn't include issues like cancer from radiation but we didn't know about all that at the time. whoops). The reason we dropped the second one was because Japan wanted to continue the war because they thought "shit that bomb is so crazy there's no way they have a second one." And *surpise* we had a second one, so the emperor forced a surrender because he didn't want to see the entire country get turned to glass because the generals didn't want to admit defeat.
There's a lot of evidence, not shown in our history books, or in the media, suggesting that Japan was actually trying to surrender. The U.S. had it's own track record of atrocities in WW2, I'm sorry to say, so the argument that this was a grossly disproportionate isn't so crazy... Something so horrific needs a selling point, but even if we take the reasoning at face value, incinerating over 200,000 people and subjecting an area to far reaching radiation fall out is a bit of a stretch. The allies were winning quite handily. We could have just as easily blockaded Japan and starved them out, saving even MORE lives, and not irradiating a populated landmass, which by the way, affected the entire planet...

Da Beast From Da Weast well to be fair history is a compilation of various sources, viewpoints, and story telling backed up with some facts. I have a history degree from the University of Connecticut. My point being that you should never take the history offered in a textbook at face value. Thats not to say that historical textbooks are worthless, just that they arent as reliable as sciences for example backed by the scientific method.

Also shows back then weren't known for their high quality before Twin Peaks / The Sopranos. But nowadays it's the complete opposite with most movies being garbage, I could see Netflix picking it up and make an epic series. (Just imagine the ninja scene at Osaka castle :D ) edit: I actually just found out that Shogun reboot series are in the work currently, produced by FX.

Did you know someone rewrote America's alphabet. There use to be like 12 other letters or sounds until someone took them out to give us our 26 letters we use today. If you write a paper for school you can still look up and use those old letters and symbols tho. the Bomb was used for two reasons mainly. US Government already knew it worked. The first reason why the US used the A-Bomb was to end the war. Millions of US soldiers would have died invading Japan. The other reason was the stop the Soviet Union. The Soviets after defeating Germany was invading Japanese lands in Manchuria and Korea & were moving very fast. USA was scared if the war kept going on and on that Soviet would end up in control of all of Korea, Large Parts of China and maybe half of Japan (similar to Germany). This is why USA dropped the bomb otherwise South Korea would never exist and all Korea would be communist and half of Japan would be Communist. This would have also allowed China to get out of control once Communism won the civil war and may have ended up with Communist China controlling Taiwan too. As sad as the Nukes on Japan were IT WAS THE RIGHT CALL, and absolutely necessary. The reason the USA dropped a 2nd bomb was because after the 1st one the Japanese would still not surrender. The Military hardliners were trying to force the Emperor to keep the war going which would have resulted in MULTI MILLIONS (much more than Bombs caused) Japanese deaths and Millions of American deaths. Basically the USA Nukes killed a few hundred thousand but saved MULTI MILLIONS of lives as well as allowed for some form of Freedom for Korea, Northern Japan and Taiwan. Absolutely the right call to drop the Bombs.

The Americans were shocked to see Japanese civilians jumping off cliffs to kill themselves rather than surrender on Saipan. Japanese government propaganda during the war had convinced them that we would absolutely brutalize them and had even women in the homeland practicing with sharpened sticks. It was calculated that an invasion would have produced a huge amount of casualties to the American troops and a colossal amount of Japanese civilian casualties. F D has a good point as well. Stalin was very full of himself after the war. When the Pope was brought up, probably because of the Poles. He famously retorted “how many divisions does he have?”
I haven't read through the comments so this probably might have been said several times before the war with Japan in World War II the conditions were an unconditional surrender the same was for Germany they all had an unconditional surrender if they wanted to stop fighting all they had to do was to stop unconditionally Japan would not surrender unconditionally because of their pride we were going to invade Japan the estimated human life lost on the American side was over 1 million they drop both bombs on Japan and it still took Japan a week to surrender in the long run it probably saved close to 3 million lives .

Not so much the emperor refusing as the leaders of the country’s military refusing to back down. There was a sizable segment that actually was in favor of surrendering, but they didn’t have the political clout to make it happen until after the bombs were dropped.
There's a clip on RU-vid of the co-pilot who helped fly oneof the aircraft over Japan. He said the first thing he thought after seeing the destruction was 'My God, what have we done.' I think he ended up drinking himself to death pretty rapidly. Whatever you think of the reasons, it was an incredible waste of human life.
The sad thing about the bombs dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki was that the US were in talks to not drop them but becuz they didn't want Russia at the bargaining table, they decided to drop the bombs before they could take over Manchuria. I'm not excusing Japan, they had an internal power struggle between the imperialists that ended up in a lot of their own ppl dying just to keep the emperor around. I'm just saying peace was possible. NOT killing all those innocents was possible.
Dropping the atomic bombs in Japan saved 100s of thousand of lives. Japan was going to fight till the last man woman and child without surrendering. It was just in their culture to fight that way, that’s a lot of Japanese dead and a lot of Americans dead or, just drop pamphlets in two cities telling all the civilians to leave as fast as they can and then dropping a bomb showing the Capitol “hey, we can drop one of these on you too” until finally the emperor surrendered.
A common misconception. Japan was already defeated and sent an offer to surrender to the Allies via Stalin, on condition they could keep the Emperor. But of course Truman wanted to show the power of the atom bomb to the Soviets, so they said no to the surrender offer. Douglas McArthur and other military leaders estimated rhe casualty rate of invading Japan to be no more than that of the Philipines invasion, and probably less, since Japan now had almost no food, fuel or ammunition. The massive casualty estimates came only from politicians, and none could back them up. The whole “Millions will die because the Japanese will fight to the death” thing was basically a myth. The Japanese military govt actually began withdrawing troops to Japan even before the Allies closed in, due to fears of a civilian uprising, since the people were being stripmined to support the war and many were starving as a result.
