Today, Apple has the largest and most diverse product ecosystem in history. From smartphones to tablets to smart watches, we’ve never seen Apple compete in so many industries simultaneously. But with all these new products, it’s easy to forget that Apple started as a computer company. And their Macintosh operating system, also known as macOS, has been around since 1984. So in this video, we’re going to explore the history of macOS, and find out how it’s grown and evolved over the past four decades.

@@jadinhtvt6870 Lion came out after Snow Leopard. Im not sure but i think that was in 2011. The first OS version which was only available from the AppStore. I don't remember too much as it was a long time ago. I think the auto save was introduced in Lion, but I'm not entirely sure. That was a great feature. @@jadinhtvt6870 I had Lion running on the first Mac Pro, and that was an unhappy mariage. Very, very unstable, but I can't tell if it was the OS or the chimera hardware (both 32 and 64 bit parts). As a courtesy I installed Google Chrome for one of the guest who was used to that interface. @@jacobbeauchamp7465 I still run SnowLeo on my good old MBP Mid 2010. As a matter of fact, I am writing this comment in Firefox on that MBP running SnowLeo. I only had to re-install SnowLeo once, namely when the original harddrive went bust and I replaced it with an SSD. I just managed to create a complete TimeMachine backup before the harddrive died entirely, but since I had installed a completely new disk, I chose to re-install SnowLeo and additional software from scratch, rather than just copying it back, except for my personal documents. This happened six years ago, and the MBP still runs on that installation several hours every day. However, SnowLeo slowly loses its ability to handle the evermore complicated internet. I still get by by the tip of my fingernails, but very soon I will have to get a somewhat larger SSD, partition it, run a newer OS X for daily use and SnowLeo occasionally for older things like AppleWorks and a few old favorite games. But I will bitterly be missing my ventilator fan control that shows tempearture and RPMs in the menu bar and also MenuMeters that show upload- and download speeds in the menu bar. They don't run on (quite) newer systems becuase Apple's fees for Kext-signing certificates are way too high for the developers.

In 1994, I was brought into a room full of the original Macintoshes. I sat down and without any instruction, I began using it and the applications. Prior to this, I'd never used a mouse before, but it was all so intuitive. Eighteen years later, I switched from Windows to Mac (Mac OS X 10.8 Mountain Lion) and it felt so familiar and intuitive. It's amazing how far macOS has evolved since 2012 and how relevant it is still is, despite the emergence of mobile devices like iPhone and iPad. So far, they've come very close to the PC experience, but have just fallen short.

Wow. What a trip down memory lane for me. Though, I really stopped using Mac OS X full time after Mac OS X 10.7 (Lion) was released. And you are correct --Snow Leopard was an AWESOME OS. It was rock stable, fast, and the workspaces were a highly useable grid (rather than the linear layout introduced with Lion). I was super productive in Snow Leopard. But after Lion eliminated or changed the way I was used to working, I went ahead and ended up loading Windows 7 on my primary Mac at the time and got back to work. These days, I find Ubuntu Mate to be a great coding working environment, but still live in Windows 10 about a 25-30% of the time as well. I used Macs from the late 1980s till Lion drove me away. Thanks for the nostalgia!

3:50 You forgot to mention System 4.2/Finder 6.0, which was the first version to support MultiFinder. This let you use all the extra RAM to run multiple applications at once. This may have derived from a project Andy Hertzfeld had been working on in his own time, called “Servant”. This was an advance on his earlier (and very popular) “Switcher” offering in letting windows from different apps coexisting on the same screen, instead of just one app at a time taking over the whole screen.

Tiger was the first macOS I used. As a Windows user at that time, it was a little strange how the applications windows worked, the shortcuts and the keys at all. But, guess who... Today I can't imagine a single Day working with Windows again. Because of the UI, stability etc. It took just one or two weeks to get used to work with macOS. Thanks Apple. Thanks for this lesson Greg!

You don't know anything. G. you don't know anything. I will do everything. So in the 1990's the American Military invented the Internet and it soon became public. They owned the domains ".com", ".net" and ".org". They costed $8-13 Then there was a new organization that assigned every country a 2 letter code. The cost was made by the country. Now I have told you about domains. Yes they are called domains. You have a Dynamic IP Address. Which changes and isn't reliable because it changes. It makes it possible to connect to the internet otherwise it would be one person at a time. You need a Static IP Address. If you type ""6.6.6.6" in you browser it will bring you to nothing. Search it in an engine and you would see that it's somewhere in America. Your IP Address will change and will bring you somewhere else. Programming isn't hard It is an Advertisement. You will have to find a good place which is very easy. Don't spend half of your time in H.T.M.L. use that ii C.S.S. because you will need to learn all the properties. I hate Javascript. I am suspicious of React because Jens at Mojang said "Facebook creeps me out.". I don't know of PHP and it looks like an Email List. For Sql you have Microsoft Access. There is a thing called a C.M.S. It is 40mb bloatware that slowly rises to 1gb. I am trying to make a Off Site C.M.S. but I would have to break all of security. Most W.Y.S.I.W.Y.G. editors don't have advanced features to make a real website. Dreamweaver is close but you still have to code. I'm really good at this. I have written way more than this for average.

Nice and very interesting, a good trip back in my childhood with this video. Just a precision: High Sierra also introduced APFS disk format which was a huge change (killing all non-SSD drives). Thanks for the nostalgia :D

MAN! those were the days. I remember lining up outside local Mac dealer to buy OS8 and OS9. I also got OS X Public Beta software. Yes, early versions of OSX were brutally slow. Wish I held on to them just for keepsakes. Always loved simple 2d GUI of System 7. It would be could cool if they brought back some looks in future version of MacOS.

Did you recognize the "Hello" font from last weeks Apple Spring loaded event? It was exactly the same style as the first Mac machine "hello" Nearing Macs 40th anniversary, you never know, some aesthetics, wallpapers and theme throwbacks could happen to celebrate.

Worked for a regional Internet service provider in the early days of the public Internet. My fellow system administrator was a published author in FreeBSD. Since the birth of WWW websites was created on a NeXT host system. When Steve Jobs came back to Apple, and in effect took NeXT OS updated it to run on Mac's. At the core of what we now know as macOS is a FreeBSD UNIX base. Apple has submitted OS X for certification (and received it,) every version since 10.5. So with what is now macOS being FreeBSD UNIX based we purchased the education all white version of the G3 all in one for the office so we could support our customers who purchased Apple Mac's. I myself who had the original 1984 Macintosh moved "Back to Mac" for personal use with the introduction of the Intel iMac. In fact until they stopped supporting 32 bit Linux for my old iMac I used it up until last year. Now with the new M series Apple iMac's I will soon be moving from Intel to Apple M series chip set. Thing is it looks like it will have Linux support down the road.

I think seirra/high seirra is my favorite. First macOS I ever used, in my moms old computer. (That computer is now mine, still running high seirra because it’s pretty old. Works perfectly though, I love it a lot haha) edit: lol reading this is interesting- snow leopard is probable my favorite now, but high seirra still holds a special place in my heart. that old computer is now a test subject, and I'm using an m1 mac now :D

Hey, can you do a video about iPhone/iPad/iPod analytics. I don’t know what they mean. Go to settings>privacy>analytics&improvements>analytics data. I have a lot of “panic-full” messages in there and many other ones, I can’t find anywhere else which tells me what analytics mean, thanks.
