I don't think America's PBS networks ever picked up Masterchef from the '90s, so I wouldn't have had a chance to watch it. I came here via that bizarre comedy sketch and then HAD to watch some of the archived episodes here on YT. Once I did that, the surreal portrayal of Grossman made a lot more sense; he really was a (likable) snob and made dining feel like something you could do only after you studied French fine cuisine.

I've never found a definitive answer if OG MasterChef made it to the US; I've never heard anyone outside the UK mention it. Lloyd Grossman was always ripe for parody and Reeves & Mortimer's is the definitive.

I didn't even know there was a pre-reality TV version! 😮

When I hear that overblown classical muzak it hurls me back to Sunday afternoons. The modern version is much better TV.

Yeah, it was a lot calmer back then.

It’s been a long time but I remember sitting there watching Loyd… great show back then. I feel it kinda lost its way though over the years.

It had to move with the times. It felt slow then, now watching a whole episode is really langurous. I quite like the shape the show is in now.

Bravo, Gary! 👏 Your documentaries are some of my favorite of your videos to watch. They're interesting and so professionally done.

Thank you, that's very kind! All I can see loads of little glitches I would fix if I had more time.

I actually auditioned for series 2 of the revamped version. I think I blew it when I criticised John and Gregg’s presenting ability!

That's hilarious! Did you make it to the programme? It's on the cutting room floor but I did audition once (obviously I didn't get on to TV ).

Oh wow, I didn't realize it wasn't always like it is today. I also had to laugh out loud at the sentence, "Who would want to watch people eat."...😆

It's so difficult to imagine, but I can remember DJ Terry Wogan mocking how many shots you used to see of Gregg Wallace shovelling food into his mouth. It's commonplace now but it was odd at one point.

Absolutely loved this exclusive documentary Gaz! I’ve never watched it, not sure why, as it’s quite good. You’re so right, British cuisine has a bad name. Superb to see the history of this show. Can really see your passion come through with this. I know a quarter finalist who would love this @thuycooks I actually have some of Tim Anderson’s books on Japanese food and cover them on my channel. Just love the mixture of culture and cuisines. Excellent video Gaz, keep up the great work. Liked 👍🏼 HHH

There was a part I considered scripting where I've been lucky enough to work with quite a few Masterchef contestants. I think Billy & Jack were the nicest.

Which year do you mean? I've done so much research for this, maybe I have it somewhere.

One of the reasons I loved the original masterchef was the music that was used. Hated the 2001 revamp. Can’t get away with current version although I did enjoy the Australian version

i wonder if marco pierre white, pierre koffman, etc. were ever on the uk version. i am also looking for any episodes with jocky petrie, ideally in the professionals series. once online i did see i think one of the finnish cooking shows, that jocky was featured in, i think they did a rabbit wellingtion, unfortunately i have not been able to find that video again, it was a whole episode of the show.

i really only watch the professionals series, i as well was able to track down all the australia episodes which marco pierre white was in and watch those

Fairly sure MPW never did MC UK. He was contracted to ITV in the early years. Jocky was in several MC amateur, sure he did a dessert masterclass and has been on lots of those "cook for a room full of scary chefs" challenges. In the past few months the MasterChef UK RU-vid channel is getting on for putting everything up so you might have your wish. I also used the MasterChef wiki a bit though it's not very comprehensive. Agakn with Koffmann he's definitely been in the banquet hall, and as I mention in the video he's in the first series of MasterChef in 1990.

@@BigSpud ah cheers, you mentioned koffmann then, i had not watched your video yet, sorry. yes, that is how i was watching the professionals episodes, i avoid the other ones, unless of course i can find out if jocky or someone or something like that is featured. it was good to see albert roux in one of the professionals episodes, i think a finale episode which was won by a contestant named ash. and yes, thankfully the australian one seems to have a better documentation or a documentation that is easily accessible.

The fundamental difference I think is the new version is more for aspirational amateurs wanting to break into the culinary industry, rather than simply a competition for people cooking as a hobby. In that respect GBBO is far closer to the original masterchef (albeit with a modern reality TV elimination rather than tournament format) than modern masterchef is.
@BigSpud

That's an interesting analogy, to compare it to Bake Off. Spot on I think.

A lot of winners now open their own restaurants and their fame doesn’t last long. Back in the 90s they won and went home, and it was more family oriented with no swearing. Celebrity chefs now think they are better than everyone, that’s why I don’t watch MC anymore.
@BigSpud
@BigSpud 3 месяца назад
It's a bit... samey. No problem with the winners using their fame to get some money or change paths, but at least we are seeing many different types of contestant and cultures now.
@jayvalintino2869

Loyd’s was the best Masterchef. Once it got to America it was destroyed, the same as the one in Australia. It’s now been scripted so much it’s stupid. And you have way to many celebrity chefs, whereas there was only one maybe two at a push back in the 90s and they weren’t really recognized when they were from Europe which made it better.
@BigSpud
@BigSpud 3 месяца назад
I enjoyed it a lot but it's quite a tough watch with hindsight, the pace is far too slow (I remember thinking this back in the 90s). It's ratcheted a touch too far the other way now!
