My favorite Tomino quote was when he admitted he designed Char's love interest in a way that wouldn't make Char seem like a simp. Tomino clearly operates at a level we are too afraid to approach.

it's one of his wildest takes, Tomino straight up said 'i need that coochie to be YANKIN, Char is gonna look like a dork if that shit can't clip nails'

I've always seen Tomino as the kind of guy who knows what he wants to write and does it, and would kill off characters to make that point. However, how many of the characters he kills off definitely feels like it's dependent on his mood. XD

There's an interview with Tomino here on youtube that might explain some of that murder hobo tendencies he has. His dad was a military scientist who was working on experimental weapons during WWII. At the very least, that explains the relationship between Tem and Amuro.

If you compare the death rate of Tomino's works, you can kind of tell the state of his mental health. while working on Gundam, he was under pressure from sponsors. Ideon, as you mention, got canned and it boasts the highest death rate of all anime, over 100% (there goes the whole universe, take that Thanos) He probably didn't have that much of fun time doing V Gundam considering "forward" in DVD insert starts off with him stating "it's an anime not worth watching." And then after a while, King Gainer and Brain Powered happened. And Turn A only those who deserved to die did and it was only handful.
@arx3516
@arx3516 Год назад
Devilman too has a 100% death rate, and in Ideon they all go to space heaven, while in Devilman they all fuffer atrocious deaths: either eaten alive by demons or executed by witch hunters.

There's no mention of the explosion destroying the universe in either the anime or the movie. I wish people would stop spreading this misinformation. The universe is shown alive and well in both endings.

@@Cosmoman78 The point to the Ide was not to destroy the Universe, but to purge the Humans and Buff Clan who were effectively polluting it with their constant warfare. The last few moments of both [TV and Be Invoked] are basically a metaphor to say "A new sapience will eventually fill this cosmos, and the Ide will stand watch in case they decide to be a bunch of fuckwits like the last one(s)."

Triton was the first anime I ever saw, I guess it must have been pretty cheap for the state broadcasting company to acquire in the early 90s and they just kept it in rotation for years. Point is I saw it enough times and had time to think about it and that ending just makes no damn sense, except that it serves to explore some grade A melodrama. As for the whole "destroy the old to build the new" line of thought, I find it deeply flawed and dangerous. Always be kind and build, that is my philosophy. If the evil old things won't let you build, leave them behind, old things tend to stay put in their old places. But I obviously wouldn't make an action show that follows such a philosophy. And it was refreshing to see a cartoon that didn't sugarcoat the story on account that it was for kids, didn't feel the need to hide all the violence and gore and cruelty. It is important for children to learn about how dangerous the world can be, how dangerous conflict can be.

The ending was so all over the place, it made it seem deeper than it is. Most of what I explain in this video comes from like 4 minutes of dialogue crammed together that I had to rewatch like 8 times to make sense of. You're not alone, haha. The best part of Triton was the stone giant episode and being awestruck by following the mystery of the dagger through the show. Also, Pipi's character development from being scared of fire to confronting it in the ship. It's a show for the characters and the adventure and the tragic deaths and glorious redemptions. The ending was completely out of nowhere bizarre, but striking in a very Tomino way, so I still like it. When you realize it's not the statue that's talking, but someone telling Triton not to get the dagger close to it! That was brilliant.

Watching this video made me question, and realize why i got into Gundam faster than most media I've consumed so far. Because i relate to it. Not just the show, but also to his philosophy, even without realizing it. Growing up I've always been a pretty tame person. Most adults around would always say I'm "always stuck within my own world", which is true. But by the time i went to highschool is when i am slowly trying to understand the world around me, it's the first time i was ever "forcibly" taken out of my own comfort zone, which is my mind palace, in order to focus a more on my surroundings. And by the time i was at the end of my HS era is when I've pretty much already been expised to the wonderful world of politics and, well, the internet. I still remember clearly the shock on my face when i realized the societal issues I've just been discovering has always existed even before i was born. It really felt at that time that my world has turned upside down, vigorously. I was ostracized, and it stings when you realize the world you've been living in with your childhood had been a lie this entire time. It came to the point where everything just fell in front of me and I couldn't understand what's right or wrong anymore, all i could ever think of was suicide. I came to the conclusion to "never think about anything" anymore, and in a way, that's kind of in the similar vain as "sacrificing my innocence." Currently, I'm trying to find a way to build myself up. I don't know how this journey would go, or if it even started yet. All i know is, like Amuro, I just need to do it. Because I'm the only one who can.

With his time of retiring nearing soon, Tomino should just reboot the original UC Gundam shows into the new era. That way he can work out the quirks they had.

I wouldn't be surprised if there is a clause somewhere in the bowels of Sunrise that say "No outright reboot of U.C. Gundam can happen until Tomino passes" Like Mazinger and Getter have been 'done over' multiple times each, but Gundam gets a lot of lateral movement and insert stories, but no overhaul to the 'original' canon.

Judging by how Bandai is still recycling (adapting, to put it politely) old UC materials and needlessly expanding on it, no wonder Tomino was, perhasps still is, frustrated by the industry's stagnance.

The funny thing about his Kill em all reputation is thst according to some interviews he only does things like rhat because he wanted to imitate Hollywood movies... or rather his conception of them as having bleak endings for some reason. He's a weird guy.

I think it has to make sense for it to be enjoyable, things like Edgerunners and its predeccesor, IBO, made a good job at setting all pieces in place since the first few episodes for how things would turn out.
