Image that war ended in 1945 like 70 years ago, our grandparenst remember the war and some of them survive in concentration camps and they live up to this point and have identification tatto with number of person in nazi camps , that's how they identificated person. Hey man! Appreciate you reacting to a big chunk of our history. In case you're interested, the war ended in 1945, and the Iron Curtain fell in 1989, so technically we were under communist rule for 44 years after the war (that excludes the remnants of their political systems, which unfortunately you can see in places to this day ;/)

Things Poland was really instrumental in as you say would include: Battle of London (Polish pilots), cracking the code of Enigma (The Pearl Harbour movie doesn't have anything in common with reality, 3 Polish coders/ cryptographers working for Great Britain were instrumental in it), Battle of Monte Cassino- real deal, very interesting battle, informing the world about Holocaust- Jan Karski. And yes, when we couldn't have our own army we literally were drafting in to any army there was at any war front there was in hope that this might be in the future something to rebuild our own army from. So yes, you can find many decorated men coming from Poland literally all over the globe fighting in WWII. As for Katyń, nobody heard about for over 40 years since first nobody talked about, later on the Russia tried to blame it on Nazi Germany, when Germany denied the crime Russia decided not to disclose the documents about for years and then Russia literally ruled in Poland to due to communism, so it was forbidden for some generations of Polish people to even learn about this issue in Polish schools (generations of my parents never heard about from their school, Russia started to admit to this crime when I was about to graduate from the primary school, so I got to hear about it in high school). Polish people knew a lot about their own past only from family stories passed one from one eye witness to another. And this probably why motifs like this one reflect in popular culture- music after all is storytelling too. If you want to know more about history of Poland I can recommend books by Norman Davis such as Poland. God's Playground. Norman Davis happens to be the one of very few people who managed to learn Polish language but who publish books on history of Poland in English. We Poles have been everywhere, ocupied, as occupant, had Poland cut in 3 pieces and distrubuted between Austria, Prussia and Russia which effectively removed country from world map for over 100 years. WW2 comes shortly after we just had our independence back.

Our national identity survived despite the fact, that for many, many years there was no "Poland" on the world map. Despite the fact, that polish people were forced to speak the language of the occupant and " assimilate". We have a lot of patriotic literature and art. We learn about this a lot since very young age, we are taught to be very, very proud of our history and identity. On the other hand i'm affraid that sometimes this proud goes too far... And i'm ashamed of polish people who call themselves "patriots" that shows nothing but hate for everybody except white polish catholic heteroseual men... Also there is still a lot of post-soviet mentality and a lot of complicated socio-political issues for which my language skills are too poor :) Poland is a free democratic country since 1989...
