Salem Chapel is the oldest surviving non-conformist chapel in Leeds city centre, and the birthplace of Leeds United Football Club. This video describes the history of Salem Chapel which dates from 1791. It also includes details of the meeting at the chapel in 1919 which led to Leeds United FC being formed.

I remember as a 5 yrs old being part of a children's Christmas, Party, with my Brothers 9 yrs old John and 3yrs old Joseph. My Dad worked for street lighting at the time, the party was for the staffs children, the Chaple looked and felt massive. Dad had previously worked as a coal miner, thought it would be a safer job, he worked for the street lighting for a year. Before returning to coal mining.

What is the origin of the name Salem , please ? Is there any connection to Salem MA in the USA ?

Hi, there a number of Salem chapels, but as far as I can make out, in the UK, they are linked only by name and non-conformist approach. Salem is Hebrew for peace, and so they are peace chapels. I am not aware of a link to Salem MA, though Salem chapels are also present in the US.
