Scotland History Tours is here for people who want to learn about Scottish history and get ideas for Scottish history tours. I try to make videos which tell you tales from Scotland's past and give you information about key dates in Scottish history and historical places to visit in Scotland. Not all videos are tales from Scotland's history, some of them are about men from Scotland's past or women from Scotland's past. Basically the people who made Scotland. From April 2020 onward I've tried to give ideas for historic days out in Scotland. Essentially these are days out in Scotland for adults who are interested in historical places to visit in Scotland.
As a Scottish history tour guide people ask: Help me plan a Scottish holiday, or help me plan a Scottish vacation if your from the US. So I've tried to give a bit of history, but some places of interest in Scotland as well.

'she always held a grudge against the English' what for? there is a common misconception that England bullied Scotland, they were 2 nations at war, Scots invaded and slaughtered the English just as much as England did to Scotland, the only difference is England doesnt dwell on the past and doesnt blame modern scots for their ancestors constantly invading and slaughtering us which led to England invading in return.

Thanks for the quick recap. You mentioned that people of Scottish decent outside Scotland care more about the clan system than those who still live in Scotland. I opine that it has to do with a sense of identity. I think there's a correlation with the deconstruction of the "American meta narrative" which has caused more people of European descent to look farther into the past for a sense of identity, and when we find it, we hold on tight, guard it, and sometimes get nasty fighting for it. Case in point, I (an American) qualify to apply for membership in the Clan Gregor Society, but not the American Clan Gregor Society (go figure). On a sillier note, I continue to appreciate the liberally sprinkled witticisms in your videos. Here are a few of my favorites from this one: "So, if you can get to the end without stabbing an Englishman..." "...and the stabby thing will get you the jail..." "Obviously Nessie has always been Scottish." "...a wall...built by a guy called 'Tony'..." "Some non-Gaelic speakers incorrectly call it 'Alba.' Stop it!" "...although it's thought that her son, James, was also a queen." "It was also during the reign of James the sixth that the Mayflower set sail to the Americas to organize a Thanksgiving dinner." "Most of them became actors in the T.V. series, 'Outlander.'"

Great video and is certainly concise enough, it is very difficult to go through such Scottish history in a short space of time, so credit to yourself. Having been born and brought up in Glasgow, I'm proud of my heritage, I have my own belief about the Picts as I don't believe they were wiped out, but would no doubt have intermingled and the name would've disappeared much like you have argued. Currently reading the Long War for Britannia by Edwin Pace, something that may interest you, it mentioned how our people (Picts) and the Irish made numerous invasions around the wall by boats and invaded during periods when the Romans were at civil war fighting in the East of the Empire. Something I would love to see your opinion of, however, would be the story of Rome's 9th legion going missing north of the wall. Who knows how true that is, but in Edwin Pace's book 'The Long War for Britannia' he does mention how Picts captured Romans and kept them as slaves. Something I find intriguing. As for all the religious nonsense and division, a sad part of the history I'm afraid.

Yes, of course, that bankrupted the country. The English paid their debts in exchange for submission. Worst deal ever. And what's even worse, Scottish people don't even know this history, I don't think it's taught in schools. The English took advantage of the Scots with every opportunity. As with all things, to find the reasons why, you only have to follow the money.
@levyroth
@levyroth 3 года назад
@b n Not for free they didn't and we all know the rest. The expedition failed because the English didn't help the Scottish settlers at all. In fact, by order of the King, all English colonies were ordered to stop trade with the Scots. The English watched while the Spanish attacked the Scots. The Spanish actually showed more mercy in the end and let the surviving colonists go free. All in all, the English did everything right to ensure the demise of the Scottish expedition and keep a tight leash for hundreds of years to come. Never equals, always "in debt". These are historical facts.
@BOOOOOOOONE
@BOOOOOOOONE 3 года назад
@@levyroth they paid the nobility's debts. There was no such concept as national debt in Scotland, unlike the English state who'd been lumbered with the crown's war debts since Henry VIII. A condition of paying the nobles' personal debts was that the Scottish state took on a portion of England's national debt. This move further impoverished ordinary Scots for decades.

Trying to learn Scottish history growing up was confusing. The lesson learned, "If it only was that simple."That was answer to most of my questions. I do remember hearing about Pittsboro but Anyways. I hope other people see the layers in Bruce's stories.

Hope this doesn’t lead to me being stabbed but this Englishman can watch your vids all day. I always loved history at school but feel Scottish, Welsh and Irish history is only ever glanced at. What I love about being British, is the history and culture of all the nations and people that make up the United Kingdom makes me culturally richer. I feel like I’m a bit of everything that makes up Britain and can love all our achievements and deplore all our mistakes and failures.

I spent my formative adult years learning Scottish history, but in my early thirties I moved across the border, and I dare you to do the same. I think once we became a recognised part of Europe, and the Italian Wars begun, we've became just another part of the huge puzzle. I certainly condemn much of what happened in the past, all the way up to the 18th century and beyond, however, modernity was much more important, we were just on the wrong side many of us Scots, though, many of us were on the victorious side, but this helped Scotland become the foremost intellectual civilisation, not just in Europe, but the modern world as it was then known. To learn English history, is to learn about law, commerce and English libertarianism, then you'll know, the English are not out enemy. We dominated London from the American Revolution forward, rebuilding Britain and then America who have done so much for the world despite those people holding onto centuries old feuds they never took part in.

I have to say, your videos are absolutely brilliant. You and I are likely on somewhat opposing sides of the political spectrum, but I would love to sit and discuss over a pint or three. I would bet we could come to common ground. Sad that our governments can't do the same. Please keep it up. I love the equanimity and lack of political browbeating in your historical stories, with a nice touch of humour (the "u" added as a nod to your UK sensibilities). Alba Go Bragh and God Bless the USA (and the Declaration of Arbroath which helped found it all)

As an aside, have you ever read Farley Mowat's _The Farfarers_ ? His premise is that Northern islanders (Hebrides, Orkneys, Shetlands, etc.) were the first to colonize Iceland, continuing on to Greenland and North America; partly in pursuit of walrus-hunting grounds, partly because of pressure from Norse invaders. He makes an interesting case, although the evidence has not been entirely conclusive...
