Luckily Shin Megami Tensei V is now officially confirmed for Switch even though it kinda was back at Switch's presentation. I have never touched a SMT game, not a single one but I'm excited for the one coming to Switch based on what people have said about the franchise.
I would recommend you to play one of the other games available. preferably the newer ones like IV and IV final. My first game was IV Final/Apocalypse, since i read that the mechanics where a bit better. and man do i love this game. but even tho veterans consider it to be one of the easier ones, it really kicked my ass. I was not expecting it to be that hard, or punishing if you mess up a turn. But i love it, kinda keeps you on your toes, and it was my first one. Takes a while to get in to, but man is it fun when you get it. And start to learn how to fuse good demons, battles etc. SMT V wont be out for at least 1 year, probably longer. Treat yourself with one of the other games so you know what you getting in to. It's kinda rough, but man is it worth it.
I think while talking about Megami Tensei's roots, Wizardry should be mentioned. The dungeon crawling and gameplay (outside of the demon negotiation) was heavily inspired by it and it's Japanese contemporaries (like "King Khufu's Treasure" and other PC98 games).
I'm having a blast with SMT V right now! Worth the wait, I like the way how the series is evolving! with a combination of past SMT and Persona concept.
Man it is sad to hear about kuzi falling off like that, but I get it. From the second I saw Shin megami nocturne in the game store all those years ago I was instantly drawn to it. (My first entry in the series). As soon as I sat down and started playing I knew that shit was special.Like the maker of the video said somewhere I hope he is happy to see his series finally got the recognition it deserved.
never knew SMT III was not a success? It was my favorite by far, I even had installed the chip needed to play Japanese and European games in US P.S. consoles.
i feel like persona 5 is a homage to megami tensei and shin megami tensei. while keeping persona. it's my opinion but i see it as that. like it would be amazing.
What a great video. I met the series thanks to SMT IV a little late (2015) And after a little time playing it, It turned into my most favorite game in life, it was such a different experience from what I was used with other rpg's (genre that I love the most) the designs, the occultism, the philosophy, the politics and moral issues, the seek for power, the mithology and well studied universal symbolisms, sci-fi, mystery, uff... It has almost all I'm most interested. The dark atmosphere, the "monster-taming" (I always love Pokémon so...) my gods and goddesses THE MUSIC!! After that, I started to investigate more and more about the series, and I was every time more in love with it... Now I like even the spin-offs as Devil Survivor, I purchased a PSP to play the first Personas, I pre-ordered Persona 5 for PS4, I purchased a PS4 slim mainly because of that, I was so hyped with SMT IV Final announcement, and purchased it the first day it arrived my country... I was stucked playing the first SMT I and II in SNES emulators... And yes, when I was watching the Nintendo Switch presentation, around 3 a.m. in my country, and ATLUS appeared in the screen, my blood was pumping, I listened the music, and then, the 25th anniversary logo was shown... I understood everything immediately. Basically, I started to scream like a fangirl... So... as you see, now I love so much this still underground/niche series and everything started with SMT IV, maybe not the best game in the series for a lot of people, but I can say by my own exp that is a very good initiation, and still my favorite game in entire life.
My hopes for 5 is it is more like if.., Strange Journey, Nocturne and Apocalypse and less like 1, 2, and 4 what I mean by that is I want something truly unique and bizarre
what does IV:A have of bizarre by SMT standards anyways? it really succeeds in polishing IV's gameplay but when it comes to storytelling is really cringey af, if it is the basic setting of the game that makes it unique and bizarre I'd agree it would go to Strange Journey and if... in a SMT conversation, but Nocturne? even by 2003 standards that was already done and along with IV they really pay a lot of homage to I. Give me both MT and SMT II over all of the above, plus the way both aforementioned games tackles issues like society in a post-apocalyptic time and the role religion has in it is very interesting and not very used in rpgs today.
PikslapGames That and I want a morality system that combines the traditional with the reasons of Nocturne, along with Peace and Anarchy from Apcolipce hell I say throw the devine powers in there for good measure as I'm disappointed there wasn't an ending that sided with them. As for what I'm overall talking about is the tripy otherworldly environments that a lot of the games I listed had, like Nomos, YHVH'S universe, The Labarinth of Amala, the Clestial Egg, sector Fornax ect I want more alien locations like that and not more of Toyko like every other SMT has
Demi-Fiend of Time and no love for Purgatorium or Lucifer Palace? YHVH'S universe, as pretty as it is, gets boring real quick because it's a barren space with the only threat of occasionally near the end meeting a flock of Metatrons that spams for 3 rounds or more, even the Basilica had more going on at the time. Can we really compare Tokyo Millennium to a regular Tokyo?, Arcadia and the Factory are an excellent example of that, personally I think the issue should be on substance over space.
Tizawoot I get it not every one is a fan of the shonen power of friendship trope in the game -_- I can get over that enjoy everything the game had to offer which includes an amazing final boss, the new doungons they added were some of the best in the series excluding that last one -_- (I like the over all design but it is too big) the new doungon crawling features and party sytem were good and taking out the fact that you never have to fight your friends unless you go anarchy, this cast of characters I actually cared about and made me care about some charicters in the original SMT IV I barely remembered, which reminds me a lot of not Persona 4 but Soul Hackers, Persona 2 IS, and a bit of the comeradery I had with the crew in Strange Journey as unlike in Persona 4 the charicters actually argue and have times where they feel they're not going to win and besides it's technically not a main entry so they can do as they want with it! Serously you people act like every SMT needs to have Ahole friends like in 1 and Nocturne which while granted Nocturne is my favorite it does kind of bother me that your friend's ultimate goal after learning that they can restore the world as they see fit is to do their own selfish thing instead of I don't know finding a way to restore what was lost?
Nice video dude. I wish there were more historical videos about the series by people who actually play the series and know what the fuck they are talking about.
I have tried the old smt games but couldn't get into it. Loved the OST tho. Finished only nocturne, strange journey, devil survivor 1 and 2, and the spin offs persona 3 and 4. Currently I'm playing digital devil saga. The most unique experience was playing devil survivor for the first time during the lockdown.
I know some people don't like the spinoffs as much, but honestly, I think the franchise as a whole is in a good place with them. The mainline games have come back, and generally all the spinoffs have their own followings. I'd rather things be this way rather than watching a shambling mess like the mainline Final Fantasy games while praying that they just take a break from those and work on other properties.
Something not many people talk about is that the kanji for True and for New is shared, so while yes the title is true goddess reincarnation it could also be seen as subtle wordplay considering it's a new interpretation
I dont get why theyre using Unreal Engine 4 instead of Persona 5 engine for the HD project... Also im kinda dissapointed the "HD project" isnt coming to ps4 and i'll have to buy a Switch just to play it.
Persona really did save the SMT series, I had no interest in smt at all until I played persona. Now after beating nocturne I'm very hyped for SMT V. I'm glad it's moving back to full 3d. Persona sales and smt IV sakes definitely helped it get back to a full fledged console game.
wellp you weren't joking when saying you had different ideas on twitter eh >v>' really wonder how you're going to keep up for each months, if you plan on doing a video related to the megami tensei franchise throughout the year ^^' in anycases thanks for the vid it was really refreshing for me to see a little recap of who was behind SMT and to see how it evolved, i'm like anyone else on that regard, stumbled on persona then wondered what was SMT and tried out nocturne (thank you emulators ~) and then completely fall in love with all of what SMT is, plus seeing they even tried to do a 3D beat them up game (Devil Summoner Raidou kuzunoha) i got completely crazy with it and gotta say seeing how their legacy manage to keep on living despite the harshness of that little society of ours i would gladly spend as much money as i can to keep them alive ;p so yeah thanks again for the vid ^v^b the future seems promising for the franchise
I'll admit I would have never looked into shin megami tensei if not for persona. Those games are just some of favorites. Their characters a lovable their game play great. And seeing as I have played all persona I had to get my fix somewhere
As a fan of the persona series (mainly 3 and up) is the main smt franchise one I should try? If so, which games do you recommend I play to get into the series
You got Persona. We get Shin Megami Tensei. I hope they decide to go multiplat with Persona 6 and make the series multiplat. But I don't see that happening for a long time.
