Sylhet district is an administrative region in the northeastern part of Bangladesh. It is a district under the jurisdiction of Sylhet division. According to the number of upazilas, Sylhet is an "A" category district of Bangladesh. [2] Sylhet is an ancient town located in the northeast of Bangladesh. Similarity of Arab soil and Sylhet soil
It is said that Shahjalal's uncle, Murshid Syed Ahmad Kabir, before coming to the East, gave him a handful of soil and told him, "If you find soil like this soil in taste, color and smell, you will spread Islam wherever you find it."
Hazrat Shahjalal (RA) appointed his distinguished disciple Sheikh Ali in charge of this soil and instructed him to compare the soil of this town with the soil of different towns along the way. Later the title of this disciple was Chashani Pir. His shrine exists in Gwaipara of Sylhet city.
Hazrat Shahjalal (R.A.) settled in Sylhet and concentrated on propagating Islam as he found the soil of Sylhet similar to that of Arabia. Finding oil and gas in Sylhet has proved the similarity between the soil of Arabia and the soil of Sylhet.
There are various names of this region mentioned in ancient texts.
According to Hindu scriptures the severed hand (hand) of Shiva's wife Sati fell in this region, hence the Hindu community believes that the name Srihatta derives from 'Sri Hasta'.
The Chinese traveler Hiuen Tsang visited the region in 640 AD. He mentions the region as "Shilichthal" in his travelogues[16].
When the Muslim society started in this country through the conquest of Bengal by the Turkish commander Ikhtiyar Uddin Muhammad Bakhtiyar Khalji, there is evidence in history that the Muslim rulers wrote the names "Silahet", "Silhet" etc. instead of the name "Shrihatt" in their documents. And this is how historians think that the name Sylhet has become famous after being transformed from Srihatt.
When "Hazrat Shah Jalal" came to "Sylhet" he and his followers 360 Auliyas were blocked by "rocks" or "stones". Then, in the infinite mercy of Almighty Allah, he said "Shilahat" (meaning - remove the stone). Then, immediately the stones moved away. Hence the name "Shilahat". Then the name has to be simplified to "Shilhat", "Silahet", "Sylhet (Present)". *[19]

It is also said that once there was a daughter of a rich man in Sylhet district. Her name was Sheila. The man built a hut in his daughter's memory and named it Shiler Hut. The name Sylhet is derived from the name Hat of this rock
