I’m a football (soccer) fan as most of the Brazilians, however, I love Rugby and Aussie Rules as well. Unfortunately, I never had a chance to go to Australia but I’ve been watching the AFL since 2017 and now I’m teaching my kids how to play during my lessons (I’m P.E Teacher). Greetings from Brazil Aussie mates!

Yeah it’s made for a very lopsided league with roughly half the teams from one state
@SirHumphrey498
@SirHumphrey498 4 года назад
The problem with the Victorians is they think they had the only league in the country , when in fact Western Australia and South Australia had competitions that matched them in every way possible. If your interested in the AFL before it became the AFL there was a state game played between Western Australia and Victoria in 1986 where the states best players played each other. In that game 41 goals were kicked and in my opinion probably the best game of Australian football ever played. ps The Victorians lost that game.
@MegaGlupe
@MegaGlupe 4 года назад
Hundsucker Proxy how come the AFL is based around the Victorian league? why didn't the Victorian league merge with south and west leagues to make the AFL? was no one interested ?
@SirHumphrey498
@SirHumphrey498 4 года назад
@@MegaGlupe yeah good question , but I have no idea why , if I was to guess I'd say it's because Melbourne has the bigger population of the cities and another guess would be in the Victorians way of thinking nothing really exists outside of Victoria. Also the Victorians somehow managed to sign a deal so no grand final can be played on any ground other than the MCG for about a hundred years or there abouts , but whatever the case they're a bias bunch.

A well done video but very remiss of you not to mention the VFA and more importantly Marngrook considering this game has been played by the first Australians for a time well before anyone can document. The video finished with a vague comment of Tasmania within 5-10 years. You probably could have mentioned that the AFL announced a provisional license with the expectation the side will debut in 2025. Other than that well done

Also, i personally thought u should of mentioned SA and WA having their own leagues which were very popular up until the VFL became the AFL. Essendon weren't called the Bombers, when the competition first started. They started getting called that after world war 2, being close the airfields in Essendon, were airforce planes were stationed. I think they were called the Same Olds when they first started. I'm pretty sure they had that name at some point, and then the Dons. And South Melbourne were called the Bloods before the Swans. They might have even have had another name around the turn of the century. They got the name the Swans, after they won the flag in 1933, and went on a nation wide recruiting effort, getting a lot of players from near the Swan River in Western Australia. Hence the name.

Hope the AFL creates a Hobart team. I could see a potential for a team labelled Tasmania, but I think it would be good to keep it at Hobart and consider adding Launceston if Hobart picks up. If only one team will be in Tasmania, there needs to then be a 20th team. I find it unlikely that anywhere in the Northern Territory would be able to hold a strong football club at this stage, and find it more likely that another more regional team in NSW is born, preferably Newcastle
@mattn1
@mattn1 4 года назад
They’d name it Tasmania and have them play half their games in Hobart and half in Launceston I reckon, the 20th team will probably come from WA I reckon, perhaps bring subi into the afl as they’re clearly too dominant in the WAFL

No they did not. University was a strictly amateur club and was having difficulty keeping pace with clubs that were paying players. The players mostly joined melbourne which at the time was the other amateur club. WW1 definitely posed difficulties for all clubs but to say that it is solely responsible for the demise of University as a VFL club or to claim that ALL university's players left to join the AIF would bith be erroneous.

Mate if you’re going to make a video depicting the history of the VFL/AFL you should really have mentioned that some clubs have changed their nickname. Geelong were know as the Pivotonians until 1923 when after a number of losses a local cartoonist drew a black cat suggesting it was to bring luck to the struggling team and Geelong adopted the new name and has used it ever since. South Melbourne were actually nicknamed the Southerners but were more widely called the Bloods and formerly changed their name to the Swans in 1934. It’s believed the name Swans was chosen because South Melbourne had a large number of Western Australian players and the WA state emblem was a swan. Also Swans were quite prevalent at Albert Park and Lake which South Melbourne had close ties. Hawthorn were originally called the Mayblooms. Apparently this was because the Hawthorn bush was also known as the May bush or May tree and it’s flowers were known as Mayblooms. Hawthorn changed their name to the Hawks in 1943.

My AFL Expansion teams from 2021 to 2030 ideas and Alternate futures 2022-Tasmanian Devils Enter the AFL After spending 2021 in the VFL. They will play at Blundstone Arena and Launceston Stadium as their main grounds and will train either at North Hobart Oval or Kingston Twins Oval. There possible Rivals are the North Melbourne Kangaroos ‘The Bass Strait Bash’ and the reason why I reckon it will be a rivalry is because North Melbourne Have a strong connection to Tasmania and they play 4 games a year in Hobart and even were considered to Move Their after they were a small Club in Melbourne and needed a new base. Hawthorn Hawks is another Possible Rivalry as the Hawks play 5 games in Launceston every year. 2023-Northern Thunder Enter the AFL in 2023 as 2021 they were an AFL NAB League team and spent the 2022 Season in the SANFL Getting their facilities up to AFL Standard. They will play at the TIO Stadium in Darwin as their main Home Venue and they also play 8 games a year in Alice Springs. The Possible Rivals of the Thunder is the Adelaide Crows because of the Strong connection between the Club and the State in General it would make sense for a bit of a Rivalry of the 2 Clubs facing each other a year and also the Women’s AFL Crows team also have a big connection to the NT because they play 1 game their a year so the possible names of the Derby is ‘The Top End Derby’. Another possible Rival is the Melbourne Demons because of the Clubs impact of the Indigenous Communities supporting the Club from the Demons helping out making Grass Ovals and new Football Facilities for the Community to use, they also play some games up in Darwin and Alice Springs too. Gold Coast Suns are a possible one as they signed a new connection with the NT. 2025-Gold Coast Suns rename time the Gold Coast Sharks as their brand ‘Suns’ wasn’t very commercially popular to AFL Audiences and they wanted to move on from the Suns after the lack of Support from the Fans so they decided to sign with Southport Sharks to 90% own the Suns and the AFL Owns 10% of the Club and is now it’s one independent AFL team. I’m Predicting the Suns to be a Finals contender a lot more with new Star players, Better support, more money, much more success and expect to be a Finals succeeder. 2025 #2-GWS Giants rename themselves to the Western Sydney Giants after they finally get Independence from Bieng fully owned from the AFL and will get a lot bigger support from fans and grow a big fanbase and the GWS-Canberra alignment ends as they ACT Get their own team but the Giants still own all of Western Sydney and most of Western New South Wales. 2026-North Melbourne Kangaroos Decide it is time to leave Melbourne to move to either 4 Cities: Cairns/Townsville, 2nd Tasmanian Team, New Zealand and Sydney. North Melbourne Kangaroos remove North Melbourne from their name to just ‘The Kangaroos’ until they settle on the cities they chose to move to. They finally decide to move to Sydney and chose to make a fanbase in North Sydney to also keep the North Name in. They will play at the new Upgraded North Sydney Oval which will be a 20,000 seater stadium. North add Orange to their Kits to fit in with the Weather of Sydney More and have a Beachy Coast feel to it. They will still play 3 games at Marvel Stadium a year so North Supporters in Melbourne can still go to a game. 2028-Each Victorian AFL Team return to there the Suburban Grounds: Richmond Tigers Finally Play at the Redeveloped Upgraded Punt Road Oval or ‘Tigerland Stadium’ which will be Richmond Tigers main home ground but still playing at the MCG and Marvel. Melbourne Demons Remain at the MCG as there historic home ground but they also start to play home games at Marvel Stadium to better connect with the City of Melbourne. Collingwood Magpies return to Victoria Park by demolishing the Remaining stands and adding new bigger ones.

They made a mistake. A Melbourne team should have formed with Goldcoast and western Sydney. They were struggling from the 1980s and are still struggling now. North Melbourne, Bulldogs, st Kilda.

Too many victorian teams, I think to even out the league 3 Victorian teams should relocate to the 3 states/territories that haven’t got a club. Example, north Melbourne relocate to Tasmania, st kilda could go to Canberra etc. doesn’t Necessarily have to be these teams to these states but you get the idea, it’ll not only finally make the sport truly Australian, with a team in every state, but it’ll even it out more with Victoria getting a few less teams

You’re probably right, but I don’t see this being well received

There is not a sufficient population in either Canberra or the NT to support an AFL team. Just look at NT thunder who are leaving the NEAFL. There's nothing wrong with having lots of teams in Victoria since it by far the state with the most supporters and one most populous states in Australia.

I agree that North Melbourne should re-locate to Tasmania. They already play as many as 3 or 4 of their home matches each season at Hobart's Bellerive Oval, they are the sole occupant of that ground, and as a result they have turned it into a fortress and are extremely difficult to beat there. The Kangaroos' supporters can whinge and moan as much as they like about their team re-locating, but they don't get big crowd attendances coming to watch them play at their home matches in Melbourne, even when the team is performing well. Usually when they get a decent crowd it's because the away team's supporters are making up most of the numbers.

Wasn't there a merger to create the Western Bulldogs?? Surprised you overlooked that........??
@tezzalenko
@tezzalenko 4 года назад
No, there wasn't. Footscray and Fitzroy came close to merging in the 80's, but supporters of both clubs raised enough money to stop that. Footscray changed their name between the 96 and 97 seasons to the Western Bulldogs so that they could be representative of the western suburbs as a whole

@@tezzalenko I thought that was footscray merging with somebody!! My mistake!! But still looks like an oversight not mentioning the name change!!
@tezzalenko
@tezzalenko 4 года назад
@@scottiethegreat74 not really, because you would need to mention all of the name and nickname changes. Did you know that in 1998, North Melbourne changed their name to the Northern Kangaroos, and changed back again in the early-mid 2000's? Or that a lot of the foundation clubs nicknames were different when they entered the competition? Essendon were the Dons, South Melbourne were the Blood Stained Angels, Fitzroy were the Maroons, Melbourne were the Fuschia's. Hawthorn entered the competition and were called the Mayblooms. It could have been worth mentioning, but it's not really that important in such a short video about the competition
@scottiethegreat74
@scottiethegreat74 4 года назад
@@tezzalenko All that aside, with this video being on RU-vid, and plenty of international interest, people watching this and looking for the teams mentioned are going to be left wondering. All your points are valid, along with many more I'm sure, but to not mention the Commonly used CURRENT name of a team, I still see as an oversight. Yes, you could go a lot deeper into past things, but they are not so relevant today. I would actually love to see a more comprehensive video on the history of teams, but in THIS case, I still think it's an error to not mention something which is relevant now!!
