The Calls in Leeds is an area and street near the River Aire, close to the centre of the city. It is one of the oldest districts of Leeds, closely associated with its history and development. The area has a rich history, but it suffered from decline for many years. Recently, many buildings have been conserved and The Calls has experienced a revival. This video traces the history of The Calls and some of the people that lived there.

Worked in Leeds most my adult life, over twenty eight years as a doorman, finished as head doorman at a club called The Backroom on Call lane, great memories cheers 😉

I used to work for DHSS in the 1970's and remember visiting both The Calls and Wharf Street. There was a hostel on The Calls called the Church Army hostel, run by the Salvation Army. There was also another hostel on Wharf Street which, I think, was private. Both only accepted men and conditions were quite poor. You are quite right to say that it was not an area to be walking around at night or indeed by day!

Fascinating. In the 60s I used to attend the grain market every week at the Corn Exchange -a very impressive building. I left Yorkshire 50 years ago for New Zealand, but I am still interested in my roots. I recall that the old port area was exceedingly mucky, but it has had a renaissance. Keep up the good work.

Thanks for posting this history of the calls. My family lived next to the Mission for Seaman on Warehouse Hill. Used to visit every Friday to meet with grandad. He used to take me on tours of the old warehouses that lined the area. We used to play football and cricket next to the river always had a pole and net ready to get the ball when it went into river.

My nephew has just bought a flat in The Calls, it's a beautiful building. In Turton's Wharf 1825.

Thank you for posting this video and doing so much research. I can remember The Calls from when I was a child, a dank, smelly somewhat dangerous place imo. It looks so very different now.

My mum taught at Leeds Parish Church school (St Peter's, adjacent to the church in those days) in the very early 1950's. They still had boat children in the school. They went there when they were in Leeds, and to school in Hull when they reached the docks there. My dad said that growing up in the 1930's in Leeds he would not have been allowed to go to the Calls as it was very rough and considered morally dangerous!

My mum spoke about it very positively even through some of the families were very rough. She had great admiration for the head master at the time.

@@Feral_Bog_Witch Minster is an honorific title specific to some churches in England, while Cathedral refers specifically to the 'church' where a Bishop resides. Minster: Minster is an honorific title given to particular churches in England.

Very interesting but the narrative needs work. Didn't some big Leeds employers have their Head Office in The Calls? Mount Charlotte Hotels and The Barr and Wallace Arnold Trust to name but two.

@@GeogJuice Nothing wrong with the content and you clearly do your homework, but it sounds almost monotone as if you are just reading from your notes. This is where trained actors/public speakers win as they add 'light and shade' to make it sound as if they are speaking naturally to a friend or colleague. Whilst not expecting a BAFTA winning performance you might try recording a short narrative several ways and judging which comes over best. This isn't to say your crap - because you're not, I'm suggesting a change in your verbal presentation - nothing more.

@@GeogJuice Your narrative is just fine. I love hearing your Yorkshire accent and your narrative reminds me of school, when my teachers would slow down their speech to ensure we understood concepts. If you 'talked proper Yorkshire' I bet few folk from outside Yorkshire would understand you. - Thanks for the videos

Thanks very much for posting this. It's always interesting to learn more about my home City. Unfortunately, you've fallen in to the most common of traps when talking about this street by perpetuating the myth that it's called The Calls when its correct name is simply Calls. I'm sorry but it really grinds my gears every time I hear you mention it.

Fair point, thank you. I should have taken that more into consideration. My only excuse is that the street/area is called The Calls by so many Leeds people in common parlance. The old street signs simply say Calls - a singular point of evidence. I wonder what else has helped you form such a strong point of view?

There's more than one point of evidence. At 0:00 the opening shot shows the street name Calls clearly. At 2:00 the 1725 map shows the street name as Calls. At 3:13 the 1770 map shows the street name as Calls. At 3:50 the 1850 map shows the street name as Calls. I accept that most people refer to the area as The Calls but the street name is simply Calls. Your opening line states that The Calls is an area and street which is not the case. The least you could do is draw attention to the glaring anomaly. I know I'm being pedantic but it’s rather like calling the street in London The Strand when its correct name is simply Strand.
