In Upper Michigan, there lies remnants of an abandoned Cold War era Radio Base deep within the woods. The Calumet Air Force Base is a fascinating remnant of American history in the defense against incoming airborne threats. The base stands at the highest point in the Keweenaw, still standing watch over the landscape it once protected. The base was not only a military installation, but an entire town dedicated to the servicemen and their families.
Featured in this video is the history of the base, the infrastructure (including a bunker), and the infamous Kinross incident involving a potential UFO encounter.... This video is meant to preserve the unique history of the base and to give a shoutout to the incredible Open Skies Project, LLC. who provided an incredible tour and the permission for us to capture the drone footage featured in this video.

Upper Michigan is home to some extensively rich history. From copper and iron mining to logging and maritime shipping, the area was founded and shaped by the early days of American industry. The determination of those who came before us is a truly remarkable legacy as these pioneers literally carved the roads, highways, and precious minerals out of some of the hardest bedrock on Earth. This channel aims to pay tribute to those who came before, and to preserve the history before it is lost.
Growing up in the northern Wisconsin region gave me and my friends easy access to the woodlands of the UP. Many secrets lie in the woods beyond as it seems every gravel road has a new adventure lurking around the corner. If you enjoy this content, consider subscribing, as it lets me know that my interests in this incredible area are shared amongst others. Thanks for watching!

Was stationed at the 665th AC&W Sq. Jan 71-Mar72. Worked in Radar Ops.....scope dope. Saw a few ufo's on our Buic radar scopes .....most likely canadian bush pilots punching holes in the clouds. On a side note myself and another airman Manning saw a woman?ghost in a white ankle length night gown, walk into Lake Superior down by the hotel on the beach in Eagle River, and just flat out disappeared. Also enjoyed the wildlife on the fire trail down to Gratiot Lake from the radar site, we'd see. Usually bears on their war to the garbage dump.

This is fascinating, first of all, thank you for your service, it's incredible that you know this place and can give insight to the history of the base while it was in operation, I was hoping people more knowledgeable than me would comment on this video. I am blown away by the amount of Ghost stories stemming from the Upper Peninsula and Lake Superior region, there is something mysterious and alluring about it. Did you enjoy your time living on the base? Were tensions ever high while you were on duty?

@@Sparrow_Outdoors123 Like most small USAF sites, with around 100 stationed there you become part of a family of sorts. Other than dealing with an average of 360 inches of snow yearly, Calumet AFS was tension free. Didn't see one fight the whole time i was there. Senior enlisted for the most part lived down in base housing, with their wives and children. Most of us aka first termers spent free time exploring the local villages, playing hockey at the Calumet armory , or practicing drinking at the NCO club on site. There was a basketball gym and 1or 2 lane bowling alley on the site. You might want to look at the Wall of Silver video on You Tube . fascinating tale of treasure on the Upper Penisula.

Great video. I was stationed at Duluth AFB back in the 70s as part of the 23d NORAD region. Calumet AFS was one of our radar stations!

I was at this base with a few other Marines to teach other Marines to be artic infantry mobility instructors. The base was chosen because of its 13 foot annual snow fall. They let us use the new barracks that had just been built. I believe it was in 1977 or 1978. It was great seeing the base again. Steve

This is really well done. I'm old, and I remember, as a kid, my Grandma used to have to "Watch the skies" for weird stuff flying around. I remember her saying she had to call in one time, as she saw SOMETHING flying around...we lived down on the Bootjack Road, just outside of Lake Linden. I remember the Grands talking about seeing UFO's by Mount Ripley, which is a big skiing destination in Hancock....also had Relatives posted there.

@@Sparrow_Outdoors123 I didn't give it a second thought...I was a little kid at the time. SO many people have told me they've seen "things"...there was a spaceship that showed in Baraga, same time each night, in the same place for a week. (that's an Indian Reservation about 45 mins south of here)).....people have seen "Ghost Ships" up north in the Keweenaw (On Lake Superior)....and I have yet to see anything! And I want to!~

Nice history lesson. I was stationed at Kinchloe AFB 1974-75. The UP is a world all its own. Some friends and I went out to RACO and snooped a round, at that time it was closed but was being used as a drop point for logs.

The government probably covered up the 2 missing pilots. Because it collided with a civilian plane.

@@Sparrow_Outdoors123 I'm a bit hard of hearing but nothing severe. I think cutting the volume of the background music by 3 db (or maybe 6 dB) would work. Plus, you might check... the speaker might be overmodulated or maybe clipping at some points.

Very cool vid with great information, but who gave you the pronunciation of K-i-n-r-o-s-s as “keen-rose”? All of us locals pronounce it as it is spelled. Keep up the good work.😊

I lived in Kinross and went to school in Rudyard. First job was at the fairgrounds. I've heard Kincheloe pronounced wrong, with a Y sound at the end. But Kinross is just what it looks like. Borring, 😅 You can always tell who's never been there.

interesting. i have lived in kin--ross 40 years ago. they would fly bombers everyday from there before i lived there. the planes would leave at 7am and didn't know where they were going. they had there first destination and after they got there they would get another destination. this continued for 24 hours. they would get refueled in the air. (the reason) they were carrying atomic bombs. to be dropped if told to do so. that's how paranoid the united states was. this went on for years.

@@Sparrow_Outdoors123 Yes it was in the mid 70's though. On one side of that lake is Fort Wilkins State Park. We had black bears frequenting the campground. Lake is very cold but crystal clear. My brother in law at that time was a Lutheran minister in Calumet. He had a cabin in Mandan Mi. which is near Copper Harbor.
