Buddy was a total arsehole. Great drummer, but not a nice guy by any means...

He was really emulating the joy with which Louie Bellson played. Louie, one of the finest drummers ever. Daniel is a great pro too.

a lot of drummers are happy while playing, but as a lot of drummers will tell you, our crippling drum face (weird faces people make while drumming) normally will override any visible joy you might see.

I think 5 string bass originated in orchestral music... Obviously they were acoustic double basses.

There are 7 string jazz guitarists and it started in the 30's. Look up George Van Eps and Bucky Pizzarelli.

A lot of heavy metal and punk rock's tropes come mainly from blues, jazz, classical and folk.

10 strings are commonly used in classical, but not in metal tunings

Thats pretty much how they sounded back then in bigband and swing.

@@hoganbentle3582 Not true. They were tuned wide open with a small amount of damping from one or two felt strips.

@@musopaul5407 I mentioned Cobham, but honestly, he wasn't doing anything that a lot of guys wouldn't be able to do if they had two bass drums. Lombardo was the first to utilize the double bass as a specific technique -- doing things that no one at the time could match and taking the process to another level. There are guys today who can play double kick faster than a lot of people can play with their hands! Bellson and Cobham never did anything close to that.

@@musopaul5407 That may be true. I guess I'm thinking of 16ths (and 16th note triplets) at super fast tempos. For some reason I don't think of Cobham as a guy who featured the double bass. He could have used just one and it would have been fine. (Which I believe he used until Birds of Fire) Guys like Lombardo defined their style by the doubles kicks.

alan cobain Ray McKinley was certainly playing double bass in the 1940s, but Louie was doing so by then as well. And it was Louie's breakout recording of "Skin Deep" that really brought the artform to the masses in a big way. If you can recommend any tracks that feature Ray McKinley playing double bass in the 1940s, I'd love to hear them.

Daniel, unfortunately I am not aware of any videos of mr. mckinley's playing with 2 bass drums in the 1940's but I am not aware of any of Louis's work in the 40's either so I would have to give ray the edge, now I am not denying that Louis took the 2 bass drums to totally new heights, and I have seen Louis many times when he appeared with the jazz at the philharmonic concerts and had drum battles with buddy rich, great stuff.

+alan cobain Louis Bellson made his drawings of a double bass drum kit - drawings that he still has - in the 1930s whilst he was at school, that is the point. Drawings of a kit he later went on to have built and then played live as his regular set-up. That is why he gets the credit for being the pioneer. Allegedly Ray McKinley used a second bass drum in the studio in the 1940s for a couple of recordings as he was struggling on a couple of the songs to play the bass drum part fast enough. Who knows who did that first? Any drummer since the pedal was invented in 1908 could have pulled two bass drums together for an experiment or for a laugh and we wouldn't know about it. Difficult to believe no one did. There is a Sonor catalogue from the First World War era which you can find online which features a double bass drum pedal, too - so the double pedal concept predates the Louie's double bass drum kit by several decades.
