The Germanic languages are a branch of the Indo-European language family spoken natively by a population of about 515 million people mainly in Europe, North America, Oceania and Southern Africa. The most widely spoken Germanic language, English, is also the world's most widely spoken language with an estimated 2 billion speakers. All Germanic languages are derived from Proto-Germanic, spoken in Iron Age Scandinavia.

The Germanic languages share many words of unknown etymological origin with each other, and the pronunciation also includes a heavy presence of schwa sounds. It is likely that a Paleo-European language(s) existed in the region before it was completely swallowed up and absorbed by Proto-Germanic.

The people of Scandinavia pre indo europian arrival also likely conjugated words by changing their roots. Only germanic langauges conjugate like foot/feet. Proto indo europian cojugates like king/kings, changing the ending. BTW proto germanic sounds like a balto slavic language, while common germanic sounds like a germanic language. Its likely that when only native indo europian born aristocrats spoke the language it was pure, while when everyone learned to speak it the native language of the lower cast made its mark on how they spoke the high language.

4:26 despite the deportations, a sizable German-speaking minority actually remained in Poland. During the 1950 timestamp, three areas should be hatched as minority German: Opole region (which remains minority German to this day), Warmia-Masuria (most German speakers emigrated to West Germany when it opened diplomatic relations with Poland in the 1970s, but some still remain), and Wałbrzych area (almost all left following 1970s). In the final timestamp, you could add Wymysiöeryś, a West Germanic language that undergoes a revival process since the beginning of the current millenium.

@vogelszijnlelijk
@vogelszijnlelijk 8 месяцев назад
According to Getica of Jordanus they came from Scandinavia, but I don't think that's actually likely, or if they did it was very early in their history, because Tacitus mentions the Goths as living modern day Poland in his book Germania, which was written in 100 AD, and the Goths spoke an East Germanic language instead of the North Germanic languages spoken in Scandinavia.

You changed the colour of norwegian instead of icelandic, cos icelandic and old norse are mutually inteligable while norwegian and old norse are not, thumbs up for that! Tho you are very wrong about baltic german in Livonia. After the crusades where finished the decline of german had stages. 1. Latgales ruling class became polish speaking after the Livonian-Muscovite war. 2. The germans where expelled to Germany in WW2. Thats it, there was no gradual decline, it was prity sudden. And even when Livonia was part of Sweden its administration happened in german.

@Knappa22 8 месяцев назад
@taylernorris5647 By that logic the map should include the USA, Canada, Australia, New Zealand etc etc because of English. It was obviously a timeline in Europe from the outset.
@taylernorris5647
@taylernorris5647 8 месяцев назад
@Knappa22 And they should be included, but Afrikaans is the first Germanic language to be formed outside Europe and the mediterranean. Of course it starts in Europe cause that is where Germanic languages originated. My point was if the video is called “History of the Germanic Languages” then it should be up to the current time in all locations. But if you want just Europe then specify that.
