The webinars on History of Mangalorean Christian Community is intended to throw light on the history of the Christian community in Mangalore that is not well known, even among its own constituents. It is a history of uprooting, values, hard work, and incredible sacrifices from ancestors that parents, peers, and children know very little about today.

I am glad Michael Lobo says that we are one Unit. Proud to be a Mangalorean even though I was born in Mumbai, not much connection with Mangalore and now settled in Australia. My children are not aware of our history. Lets move forward as one Unit, a progressive community above petty divisions like caste, language, etc. Instead of reading too much in a complex history. Can the respected intellectual panelist of our community give a vision for our generations to come.

We are acutely came from Kashmir valley. Those valleys were Panch gude valleys. So we were pancha gauda saraswati brahmins. Because of severe drought in these valleys as there were earthquakes the river tributaries died out and we moved south looking for greener pastures. And there were tribal fights and we moved in different directions. We Manglorean Catholics were konkanas converted by Spanish and Portuguese. Those days All Konkanas used to have many wives. It was very common. The favourite wife used to inherit the husbands belongings rest were left out. The missionaries gave shelter and gave education etc. So here we are. This was told to me by Father Mascheranas from jeppo asharam in 1980s. And strongly believe this we manglorean konkanas harboured by missionaries early 15 or 16th century. Please dont get offended of this because there were pandavas one wife for many brothers same way it was very common to have many wives in olden days. See in bible king Solomon. But we can clarify this wit Real Konkanas they know better. Thanks for listening .

Keep lying to yourself. The least you could do is to study the Portuguese records. What you depend on is hearsay.

With regard to Vijay's question on different accent b/w GSBs and Catholics: I assume it is due to the different region in Goa for which we belong to. GSBs are basically from South Goa and Mangalorean Catholics are from North. Same like how Kannada is being spoken in different accent in South and North Karnataka. Also, due to slight influence of Portuguese Language.

I am a GSB from Udupi. My paternal ancestry can be traced to north Goa, i.e. Thiswadi, Diwadi island. As far as Hindu Saraswats are concerned, it is quite easy to trace our roots. 1) Kuladevata - can easily traced back to the very village we originated. Portuguese records show which temples were destroyed. They were relocated located later. However, the clarity is still there. For example, our Kuladevata temple located at Shirali, near Bhatkal, addresses us as Kulavis of Neveli and Golthi - two adjacent villages in the river island of Diwar in the Mandovi river. 2) Tiswadikars are from the thirty villages lying between the rivers Mandovi and Zuari. 3) Shashatikars are from 66 villages lying to the south of the Zuari River. 4) Together it is 96 villages, why we were called Shenvi's 5) Bhardeshkars are from the 12 villages to the north of the Zuari River, known as Bardesh. 6) Rajapurkars are from Rajapur area. 7) Pednekars are from from Pedne area.

There are a lot of fundemental problems of this traditional upper caste "persecution" narrative. All mangalore Catholics are not bamons, there are charodis, sudirs, renders, and gowdis as well, the converts by the Jesuits in the late 19th/early 20th century from South Kanara itself from dalits, Koragas and other oppressed castes. Mangalore Catholics were mostly a peasant class/caste population right till the middle of the 20th century. Upper castes hindu brahmins and bunts in south kanara functioned as oppressor castes against all non-elite Catholics especially in feudalistic context, which makes brahminical narrative by current middle class and elites in the community problematic and absurd. Christian tenants were not allowed to sit in front of bunt landlords as noted by the lived experience of Fr Mark Walder till the 1960s. It's hilarious that the community has brahminical claims. Alan Machado himself now rejects the Saraswat narrative. A sizeable section of south indian population have ANI ancestry including BC castes like Ezhavas, Yadavs and makes no sense to make that claim (which was basically a GSB myth invention). GSB identity itself emerged around the 19th century, and were practically a trading caste. Not to mention other castes which converted to catholicism. All populations and various castes have origins/ancestors from the North West of the subcontinent, where supposedly the mythical Saraswati is located, so by that logic all Indian people are "saraswats"! The initial goans migrated for reasons of mainly of famines and wars. The Inquisition itself was limited in its scope and mostly targeted jews and the new Christians but the scope of the punishments was what could be considered a judicial system based on religion which was the norm at the time and not very different from panchayats. This has been looked into by Alan Machado himself in his latest book on examining primary sources. Even the Tipu persecution is used to spread islamophobia in the community, which was primarily a political question at the time. Being a monarch, Tipu persecuted or allied with groups who allied with him, including giving patronage to temples (even Aurangzeb did this) as monarchs through the ages have done. Instead of rooting the identity in peasant/working class/caste ethos as established by research of scholars like Vishanz Pinto, Vinay Rajat, the pushing of the elitist brahminical narrative is an attempt of sanskritization by current social elites of the community.

Please call by Chhatrapati Shivaji and Chhatrapati Sambhaji. Marathas had not invaded, on the contrary Portuguese came to our land and started forceful conversion. Chhatrapati Shivaji killed Jesuits for this Portuguese Notification on forceful hindu conversion. Don't distort the history.
