So here is my take on “our true identity and culture” Many people have moved around this planet that we call earth for more years than we can be sure of. And they didn’t always move because they wanted to. But whatever the reason, they carried with them what they carried with them and left the rest behind. They made the most of their cultures and practices no matter where they ended up. Our identity and our culture is right there in the story of black people. And the story of black people is not about any other group of people who may identify as black outside of the US. Why? Because that was the term designated to the negros here in the US. And the more you dig into what was actually going on in the beginnings of this country being settled there was a lot of interracial relations. Also, not all people of African descent came here as a slave. Idk that much about European history, but this sentiment that Africans were beneath them didn’t always exist. But anyway. When white women had these babies with men who weren’t white, they took on the status of the mother even if the father was a slave. Have you ever asked yourself what came first interracial relationships or laws making them illegal? Again…in the story of black people is our identity and culture. I’m embarrassed by some the behavior of modern blk folk. But the overall story of blacks people is one to be proud of. It should motivate and inspire our youth! It should empower us. But it doesn’t because it’s not given to us in that way. We aren’t searching for identity or culture. We’re searching for something to be proud of….to everybody else. But our story is one to be proud of.

The difference here was that we the Jamaicans had a rest from the British Colonialists, while The US suffered under their constant watching an control through lynching's and other acts of terror and brutality. During this time of rest from Britain and other dubious Colonial powers, Jamaican slaves Started owning their own land and farming. eventually learning to read and write without the overseeing eyes of the oppressors, so we quickly started to adopt a different view to the power struggle; 'we were in charge of our destiny' and the British for the most part left us alone in fact, Jamaica was the first colonial nation to have a railway system built by the British of course to extract metals, sugar and other goods, So the Jamaican economy boomed during the first part of the 20th century. Marcus Garvey born in Jamaica and educated in Britain as a newspaper printers apprentice, went to United states in the early 1900s and started to preach that blacks were every bit as good as the white people and perhaps better. Malcolm X and Martin Luther King Senior were followers of Marcus Garvey who sparked Civil rights movements all over the world. Sad that many Caribbeans don’t know that the first million blacks to the Americas and Caribbean came from Spain and Portugal .they were Academics and business leaders who built over 20 universities in Spain.
