CAF should continue on manufacturing more Class 195 DMU and Class 331 EMU Civity rolling stocks especially for Northeast England. With the Class 195 to operate on the Durham Coast Line, Bishop Auckland branch line, Tees Valley Line and York-Scarborough shuttle and the Class 331 to operate from York to Newcastle and Chathill.

From an engineering point of view, bimodes make no sense, because they always have excess weight - when running as an electric, you have the deadweight of a diesel engine to lug around, when running as a diesel, you have the deadweight of the electrical equipment. In both cases, you are constantly using more power/fuel than you need to. So diesel bimode is always more expensive to run than a standard DMU and the same for an electric bimode. Arriva made a sensible decision.

What a bimode sacrifices in efficiency it exchanges for flexibility. There are definite arguments for both approaches.

@@andrewreynolds4949 Well, if there's an "argument" there, there's no other railway in the world (incl. my country) where it gains any "traction" harhar (pun intended).

@@andrewreynolds4949 well a DMU is as flexible as a bi-mode. Maybe slightly less reliable than an EMU. But well built DMUs can and have run on every mile of track in the country for over 50 years

@@hypotheticlz DMUs do have the disadvantage in acceleration, which is important on commuter services. On most lines there will not be much of a difference, other than 1) emissions/air quality, and 2) politics.

That being said have you guys heard the class 331 motors they sound amaaaazing. If you wanna hear just quickly search class 331 ride. And listen to them motor sounds, if southeastern got some new rolling stock, it would be cool to have a CAF produced unit like the 331s , however in my mind, preferably modified to look similar to networkers 'because networkers are awsome, (in my oponion) "and as we are all fans of southeastern here clearly heheheh'😀😀

It's kind of similar to the sounds of the 323, which IMO is easily the best sounding, although I’m sure nostalgia plays a big part in it, go and listen to them!

@@alexthegrape1000 I guess opinions are subjective , but they are very nice units the 323. My personal favourites are 465 metro cammels

4:50 Northern did actually operate Class 180s left over from FGW around 2010, out of stations like Manchester Victoria, before these were introduced with Grand Central. Later on, Northern again used Class 180s, sub leased from Grand Central, on the Calder Valley Line.

In Northern’s future I believe they are listed to get the WMR class 323s to replace their class 319s. They are also (eventually) supposed to get 156s from EMR. I have heard they have also put out Request of Interest on new trains, possibly bimodes.

CAF is translated by Northern Staff as "cheap as fuck" - Still holds true. Getting more desirios built by Siemens would have been the better option.
