I enjoyed living in Eureka, CA from 1995-97 where I was posted as an Army Recruiter (Station Commander) and I grew up in Klamath Falls, OR where my dad worked for SP then UP for 40 years. I do model railroading (HO scale) in SP, UP and SF. I remember when the line was washed out around the time I lived there (on Bay Street). I have a good friend Russ Biasca who owns Don’s Rentall and he owns and restores vintage Military Vehicles which I also do, he knows quite a bit about the history of the community as well. If memory still serves me well, I think the City of Eureka is still trying to get rid of a couple stranded SD9’s that’s in an old sorting yard. Now that I’m retired I’d love to live there but there’s way too many liberal fruitcakes up there so I know things won’t end well after a while.
I lived on he NWP main just north of Healdsburg. In he steam era lots of activity. But s diesel came on he logging activity was dropping off dramatically. This began to spell the demise of NWP. While it lasted, good operation. Their late EMD SD 9 Cadillacs were real show.
My dad told me of a train locomotive that was left abandoned in the mountains above Trinidad at some point in the 1930s or there abouts. There was a fire that swept thru burning all the tressels down. The train is still there to this day. I'm sure it must be really rusted by now.
I remember getting ice cream at Bordens Dairy in San Rafael and watching the departure on the night train to Eureka. I was about 10 years old and it was in 1843.
Rail trailing from Cloverdale north through the sediment hills upper to Fortuna and eureka That's billions of dollars Not when we have other things that need to be taken care of
