Rundown
This video shows the progression of the Ottoman Empire through maps. Progressing from the first appearance of the Ottoman Beylik in 1299, to it's final fall in 1923. The video also shows the history of the Turkish Republic from 1923-2022 though much quicker and only showing major territorial changes.
History.
After the collapse of the Sultanate of Rum, the final remnant of the old Seljuk Empire, in 1299. Osman I of the Ottoman Beylik came to find an Anatolia filled with only small, squabbling groups and tribes. Inevitably, one would emerge above. In C.1350-1400 the Ottomans would rise to control much of the Anatolian Peninsula as well as some land on the European Continent.
1453, the final remnants of the Byzantine Empire (for that story see: • History of Byzantium |... ) were captured under Mehmed II. This marked the final stepping stone in the by this point unstoppable Ottoman Empire, moving the capital, the next few sultans did very little. Then Selim I became Sultan, and took Egypt. And then came Suleiman.
Suleiman the Magnificent, often cited as the greatest Ottoman Sultan in history, came to the throne in 1520 before conquering much of the European continent, expanding through North Africa, and even striking at the heart of the Persian Empire of the East. Raising the Empire to it's zenith by C. 1560.
But after his death, the Empire would be led predominantly by incompetents. From 1566 with the death of Suleiman, to 1923 the Empire would be in a constant state of decline, eventually being nicknamed. 'The Sick Man of Europe' by the Great European Powers of the Industrial Age. By 1850 the Ottoman Empire was a shell of her former self, trapped within it's own view of supremacy, while massively overshadowed by her international competitors of Britain, France, Russia, and others. Even falling behind of the subjects it came to occupy.
Towards the end of it's life, the Empire was in a state of total disrepair. Losing land on every front, uprisings became more common than French Strikes, and to top it all off, war tore the world as it was known to them, to shreds. A new nation was born, Turkey.
