In which we witness Earth's First Contact with the Ziru Sirka, the opening moves of the Interstellar Wars, and the first inklings of the Riddle of the Ancients.
My venerable (2012) PC that was my editing workstation has bricked and I am between computers at the moment. My schedule with parenting still makes it hard to do frequent uploads that I feel would be important to setting down roots on Patreon. In the meantime, if you want to support the channel, if you liked this video, it would be a great help if you could share this video around to all the places in the internet where Traveller is discussed so that more eyeballs can see it and we can improve the channel's impressions rate.
I know there is a lot of great stuff on my channel that I think isn't achieving its full reach, and I am contemplating turning on monetization--not for the money, but so that the YT bots will more ardently promote our work.
The Traveller Universe is in the steady hands of Marc Miller at Far Future Enterprises www.farfuture.... The contributions of the late Loren Wiseman to the legendarium are of special import to the content discussed in this Chapter.

Fremda here, from Italy. I've been a regular RPG player for ten years now, mainly a Call of Cthulhu Game Master with non modern setting. I'm also a great lover of science fiction but, curiously, I've never played in a sci-fi setting other than a Hillfolk campaign on a futuristic Earth. Year ago I bought the core Traveller manual (Mongoose 2ed) and two adventures set in the Great Rift but I never used them. Now I decided to do it. I bought other supplements, studied the different books and I am expanding the official Islands in the Rift adventure. I'm very excited: my first role play adventure in the space! I will start it this week with two different groups. All this premise to say that while I deepened I discovered this channel and I am loving it. I find the Traveler videos very inspiring and I want to thank the CGA for his work. I hope to become a regular Traveler master, to join this fantastic community and to see new videos on the subject. Thank you, Critical Game Apologyst. You're helping me love this universe.

I first played Traveller at the Rec Center on Patch Barracks in the early 80's, we were a multi Service Post so we had a few Air Force, Navy and Marines on an Army post. Up til this point the only RPG I'd ever played was D&D, and while I still have a soft spot for D&D, Traveller was like a breath of air to a suffocating man. There were only about 3 people that had the little books (that was all there was at the time) out of a 14 person gaming group but they saw alot of use and I was immediately hooked. I'm now 60 years old and I still love Traveller, I have written several adventures, and a few campaigns for several gaming groups over the years as well as designing deck plans for many Ships, and not one minute of all the time it took to do these things would I consider a waste of time.I still prefer Mark Millers original 1st edition with a few mods (it's my World, and welcome to it!) to the GDW, D20, Mega Traveller, New Era stuff, though I haven't tried 5E or Mongoose yet, but I really miss the old JTAS books, they always had something new and useful in them. I thought for a long time that I was one of the few that knew about Traveller, it seems to get lost in all the other TTRPGs out there, nice to know it's still going strong. May you adventure in interesting times, and safe travels.

Years after this video was posted, I am seeing it still finds an audience enjoying and soaking in this information. I love the option for Referees to make their own mark in this game, but also have so much to draw on. It's an elegant system that is respected in the M2E version. I'm exposing others to it with a monthly game, now, and they're loving it!

This is great, your craftsmanship skillz have definitely been improving in recent times, though you’ve always told a good yarn. I’ve only recently got into Traveller in a serious way, though I have played a couple of sessions years ago in a friend’s home brew game. For some reason I always thought default Traveller was more of an epic in the Dune vein rather than Firefly-esque space western, so I’m pleasantly surprised. For such a simple game (mechanically) you definitely get a lot of umph per session. I’m looking forward to future instalments

The Ziru Sirka was inspired by the Gordon R. Dickson novel *Wolfling*, which I read when it was serialized in *Analog* in the 1960s. Earth humans discover they live on the edge of a vast empire of various human races. And it also has something very much like light sabers.

@The_CGA
@The_CGA 3 года назад
There isn’t yet; yours is a frequent inquiry. There are several reasons for this, all of which will be overcome in their time. The foremost reason is that projects of this nature demand a prelude of research and writing, leading into voice-over work, all of which require a kind of concentration I am unable to achieve in the situation the pandemic has found me in. Thankfully, a vaccine is on the way, and with it a bit more time for those steps. The last year has been marked by an effort merely to keep up and prevent the algorithm from burying my channel in the sands of time altogether. Cheers and welcome. In the meantime, The “whistle-stop tour of the traveller universe” video has a similar focus on setting, a bit clunkier and long in the tooth, but might satisfy the same tastes that this video does.

It is, like so many things, waiting for the CoronaPocalypse to subside. There is a lot of research and refining of the scripts which I find I do not have the concentration available for as I have been keeping close quarters with my family 7 days a week. I really do appreciate these calls to return to it, however. It is a point of light seeing how much people have taken a shine to this video and I want future parts to live up to and exceed the quality and moxie that makes part 1 successful.

Excellent history. Traveller satisfies that corner of the SF fans / creators that are okay with the sands of time moving in eons instead of minutes. Within the context of the full history, there are hundreds of "Star Wars" moments. Which may explain some folks love of he Old Republic. And I think the space-trucker / debt-runner trope emulates or showcases a mindset that mankind is at their most noble when free to move about the universe without the long arm of the government to interfere. And all the shenanigans that happen when empire builders and fringe dwelling entrepreneurs collide.

That's the thing with Trav. It didn't have a setting for the most part. But you could take the other books and stuff from the BBS forums and apply them as you saw fit in your own campaign.

I would love to see Marc release more Traveller adventures. Mega Traveller was kind of screwed up mechanically compared to Traveller. Traveller The New Era was a cool system that was based on Twilight 2000 V2.2's D20 (roll under) but the setting was VERY wonky. I mean, VAMPIRE SHIPS? By the way, thanks for sharing this history on RU-vid. While I have read it many times in my youth, the younger players in my group won't take the time to ACTUALLY read the Traveller history. Have you ever read about or even heard of "The Great Game" that the GDW devs played to get the "history" for 2300 AD?
@The_CGA
@The_CGA 5 лет назад
I’ve heard (of) it and the various brags about it. I have not seen anything out of it like photos or maps, nor seen much in official 2300 products that showed the kind of detail that that scale of game would have created if it was closely recorded. I wonder if those records exist somewhere.
@swaghauler8334
@swaghauler8334 5 лет назад
@@The_CGA Apparently (according to comments made by Frank to members of the Twilight2000 forum before he died) Frank, Marc, and the guys at GDW established a set of loose rules involving die rolls and mods and THEN set about resolving a number of imagined conflicts and technological advancements by rolling dice to see who would be the winner of a given competition or conflict. China, the US, Europe, Russia, Japan, Great Britain, and Brazil were the primary focus but India, Mexico, Canada, and Israel also played parts in "The Great Game." The legend is that "The Great Game" took on a "life of its own" and spawned the original Traveller2300 (later called 2300AD) setting. The original goal of the "Great Game" was not really to create a new game but to get to a point in history where Twilight2000 players could "transition" to the Traveller universe. However, once they got the "Great Game" rolling, the concept for Traveller2300 began to "gel" (stutterwarp, very low-tech spacecraft, and a Twilight War in space) and they decided to go with the idea using some rules ideas that they wanted to explore. It kind of reminds me of the "mini-game" of character creation in Traveller and MegaTraveller. This is probably the most famous instance of a "randomly generated history" being used to develop the premise for a new game. This was unheard of in the 1980s.

@The_CGA
@The_CGA Месяц назад
@@allones3078 cool This archetype of lore video is hard for my brand, i try to keep a focus on how a legendarium resonates with IRL history and human experience, or focusing on a legendarium as a place with stories and at-tabletop situations yet to be discovered. So my approach and motivations are a little different than the more straight ahead lorechannel type videos. The history of the wars beyond the first and second was just…too much “history” and not enough “game setting” in the scripts I tried, especially as i preferred to relate the ISW era to the third imperium setting at the core of Traveller.
@JosephKeenanisme
@JosephKeenanisme 3 года назад
I don't think a lot of the current kids (30s and under) grasp the idea of a tool kit system where you pick and choose what you want to use and discard the rest. Traveller, GURPS, and to some extent Savage Worlds (generic but more cinematic) are such systems.... all the D&D stuff tends to be prepackaged settings where you don't need to create, prune, or do anything other than buy product. That's more of an old school thing, making a homebrew setting, modification of a few different purchased or established settings. One of the things about Trav is that you could as much or little of cannon as you want at a home game but go to a con and still know the setting..... would be like living in Hong Kong but visiting Houston.

Traveller is set in the 1970s. Sorry to say it. What's more it's America in the 1970s. What's more it's American science fiction in ANALOG in the 1970s. And the idea that the human race and human culture can continue untransformed for so many centuries just breaks the suspension of disbelief in lots of people.

This is an ongoing exploration, the plausibility of psychohistory slowing down cultural drift-at the present moment a humanity cast Amber, or near enough, seems more congruous than ever as social media Soma/mind control/cheaply purchased opinions & votes seems like a plausible reality The specific sci-fi bedrock is, as you say, hopelessly remote, and the pretense that “Traveller is SciFi” should be dropped altogether for “Traveller is an interstellar cassette futurism “cinematic universe.” Traveller is Traveller-like Shadowrun is Shadowrun and VtM is VtM-a singular creature. Not really clear at which point you started typing this comment or what bearing it has on the overall topic-an infotainment lore video, same as historyTube…this sort of narrative in-world storytelling gets the view retention and satisfies people’s thirst to step through a looking-glass by clicking a video on their phone. Edit: I mentioned “transhumanism” in the Ray Kerzweil sense of the word, people subliming (on a culture/worldwide level) into digital forms, transferring their consciousness into a jellyfish, etc. This sort of thing is eons away from reality, but in any case in the science fiction I’ve read, Iain Banks cultureverse, it comes off as a form of self-expression and self-modification, a liberty that is innate to personhood. Which is just about how I feel regarding Trans folks in the present day-you do you and become your (new) self. Within the realm of RPG legendaria, and creating a setting that’s accessible and easy to imagine and follow in the mind’s eye, (which is useful for accessibility and staying power of games and settings)…there can be such a thing as “too much of a good thing,” which is what I meant here. As a creative choice, it may behoove us as GMs to select settings with more in common with our present Human Condition
