Welcome! This is my video about the history of the City of Portland train that ran from Chicago to Portland over the Union Pacific Railroad. This includes a short history of Henry Villiard, the Northern Pacific Railroad, and Amtrak.
My grandfather was a chef on the City of Portland. His name was William "Bill" Buzzard. When I was 4 or 5 years old (1959-1960)my mother and I took the train to Portland. My grandfather met us at the station and he took me up to the locomotive and the engineers let me up into the cab and gave me a tour. Those were the E8 or E9's I believe. A very big deal for a young boy and one of my fondest memories. He retired sometime in the early 60's. I still have some of the old menus from the dining car. Thanks for the video
