Its so funny that this is a "thing" amongst sound editors and directors. I clearly remember hearing this scream when watching starwars as a kid and then recognizing it later in other films. Now 25 years later watching the history of this little sound effect on youtube is just awesome. Thanks for the history lesson!
The way the sound guys and editors talk about it, and the fact that it is used in so many movies, just makes me smile because it shows that even the guys coming up with the higher production value stuff are just a bunch of smart asses.
I can't count how many times i've used this scream in my vids, it's so perfect. I started noticing it everywhere once i discovered it; even things like American Dad and Family Guy have it
They still use it, but there are also other sound effects that are being re-used a lot. Not many people know about these so those are now what the wilhelm scream used to be before people knew about it.
I've been a movie afficianado for years and was never aware of the "Wilhelm Scream" until yesterday after seeing a Yahoo headline. God bless RU-vid and the internet! Whenever I hear it I will shout "Wilhelm!" and I will pass this on to my four children.
Before, I used to sometimes notice the Wilhelm scream, but now, it's in every movie I watch. EVERY. MOVIE. This year I haven't even seen a movie without it.
I have heard this movie scream throughout my life since a kid in the 60s, thought it was just used because it was a stock scream footage, the story behind it's continued use is , for a trivia butf like me, cool and fascinating. Thanks for sharing.
I think I've always been aware of that scream. It was "one of those screams you always hear" to me. It's just so distinctive. You know it when you hear it a few times.
MultiDean98 it's called Wilhelm scream even no Wilhelm did the scream. The character that was first REused on was called Wilhelm, not the original. So this proves that anyone can steal something and make it famous with their name on it
Except no one knows who performed the scream? They can only speculate that it was the guy who sang The Purple People Eaters. So he's famous for that while no ones famous for the scream.. The scream is famous on its own
I remember first hearing it in A New Hope. Since then, I've heard it in just about every single movie I've ever watched. Now it's even in a bunch of videogames. Love it.
Reminded me when i was playing a video game in that part i was beating a guy and throwing him away and when i threw him away i heard a Wilhelm scream and i felt amazed i found it's a same sound of Wilhelm scream i always hear it in movies and cartoons
What is the origin of the baby laugh I hear in everything? I first heard it in the movie Raising Arizona and then again in an episode of Quantum Leap, since then I've heard it in everything that requires the stock sound of a baby laugh - in particular adverts. It's still used today.
Roger Ebert asked me that very same question several years ago, Daniel… my answer is in this archived edition of his "Answer Man" column: www.rogerebert.com/answer-man/mmmmmm-doh-nuts
Also, I've noticed that in almost every sitcom, specifically on Disney channel and Nickelodeon.....they have a supposed "audience" laughing. But it laughs at every stupid line.....and it sounds SO fake, and it's the same laughs in every show, I swear.....it's pretty weird.....
Thank you Steve, This is A WILHELM SCREAM's tour manager. That little mention totally took me by surprise. Thank you for making note. Ive seen tons of comments of peoples confusion on other videos, lol. Always makes me giggle a little. Thanks again man. They guys will be stoked!!!
Great documentary! I always noticed the scream when I was growing up but didn't realize it had a name and a history until a few years ago. That's pretty cool that it was probably Sheb Wooley.
I love this scream I'm happy i found the name of it, I always wondered why they decided to use it in every Indiana Jones movie, it cracks me up how every single time a guy gets shot and falls of a ledge or something, he does a Wilhelm scream
I was so happy when i herd about this, i was a big star wars fan as a kid and always noticed this, me and friends always called it the starwars yell. This is a really cool story
The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey uses it when Gandalf smacks a goblin off the bridge he and the dwarfs are running on and Transformers: Fall of Cybertron uses it when Bruticus punches one of the towers on the Ark
I'd heard the scream in many movies, but I never knew what it was. I saw the title of this video in the related section and thought "that's got to be that one scream that's all over star wars and indiana jones" Mystery solved.
It's in the show Chuck a couple of times. The past couple of years I've noticed that this scream is in a LOT of movies, and I've been trying to find it. Thanks for the history of it. :)
AFTER YEARS OF SEARCHING, I FINALLY FOUND THE NAME OF THE SCREAM! NOW I HAVE TEH FINAL PIECE IN MY PLAN TO TAKE OVER THE WORLD! MUAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAAAA! *stubs his toe, and makes the willhelm scream*
This is a very inisightful video. I never knew where this scream came from or how it was produced. All I know is I have heard it in numerous movies pretty much all of my life. Great video! Ken Palmer
2:51 I think I have heard the 'AU' version for a several times in movies as well. Is that another wilhelm scream? Thank you for this video, you truly filled a great gap in my life. Seriously. Sometimes I could sleep because of this mystery.
Very good ear. Another of my absolute favorite sound effects, and one I want to write about. They're so over-the-top. Murray Spivack was amazing. I actually gave them to the sound guys who did Peter Jackson's King Kong to make certain they were included. And we've used them in a few of Joe Dante's films, too.
The Wilhelm Scream is in everything I think I remember that scream in previous command and conquer games and it was so below the radar that nobody notices its in there
I've been plagued by the truth behind this conspiracy for my entire life. Thank you for lifting this small weight from my back. I feel like I've found my long lost father...or at least my father's long lost college roommate.
I know which ricochet you are talking about. The "pah-weeeeeeeeeeew" sound. Westerns and War movies of the 50's and 60's. Can't think of the movies right now, but I know what you are talking about. Can't wait to see it!
Super cool! It makes me laugh. I first started to recognize this scream when I'd rewatch The Lord of the Rings trilogy films. My mom is a HUGE Tolkien fanatic & raised me on the tales of Middle Earth, so I've probably seen them each over 100 times. I can see why some people like the Sleepy Cabin guys find it irritating. I embrace it though. This sound is a bit like an Easter egg, to use a video game term. It's even appeared in Adventure Time.
