As a ukrainian I'm very thankful for your efforts put into this video, though there are some inaccuracies I'd like to point out. 1. Ukraine doesn't mean 'borderland'. It's just not right semantically, as though it's similar to the word for borderland(okraina), their prefixes are actually opposite in meaning. Both words come from the word 'krai', which can mean either 'border' or 'land', but the prefix o- means it's outside of the 'krai', while prefix u- is the opposite. Ukraine basically means inland, and not the borderland. 2. Russia actually recognised Ukrainian independence many times. During the dissolution of the Soviet Union, in the Budapest memorandum, which was a guarantee of safety of Ukraine, given in exchange for it's leftover nukes. It changed in 2014 when ukrainian people have ousted out the pro-russian dictator and Russia invaded Crimea and Donbass

One thing about the name of our country: Ukraine doesn't mean "borderland", it just means "land". As in "planet Earth". And it's russian colonisers who claim it's a "borderland" to their empire. If you think about it, how could a most ancient slavic city, centre of the slavic culture be a center of a borderland?

I am very pleasantly surprised! I myself am from Ukraine and a historian by education, and for the first time I see English-language material on the history of Ukraine to which I have no complaints in principle. It is obvious that the authors worked very well and that the main thing was to show such a difficult topic to understand as the History of Ukraine! Thanks so much! By the way, for the region of Transcarpathia in Ukraine, there another Irish figure who is very important - Egán Ede. He did a lot to awaken the national consciousness of Ukrainians in this area. Erin go Bragh! Slava Ukraini!

4:13 is the coat of arms of the Kingdom of Galicia (western region of Ukraine). It would be more appropriate to insert the seryabryanik of Yaroslav the Wise, the prototype of the coat of arms of Ukraine. By the way, the coat of arms of Ukraine means a falcon soaring down, in Russia, the coat of arms of Staraya Ladoga is also similar to the coat of arms of Ukraine.

I came back to this video after hearing that Ukraine will become a member of NATO. It holds up pretty well, considering how much longer the war has gone on since this video's publication. After the enitselaP-learsI (had to reverse it to get around RU-vid restrictions) video has come out, and you've taken a break from all that hard work, any chance of a May 2024 Ukraine update video, Mr Ruddy? 🥺

With every evil comes a good. And here is the good in the Ukraine-Russia war: ever since the war, the world (specifically the West) was made more aware about Ukraine. I am not sure you've noticed but Ukraine language preservation has vastly increased since the war. Streaming services, such as iirc Netflix, have begun to include Ukraine language options and subtitles. This pro-Ukraine sentiment (which controversial opinion: seems forced to me, people who have and had no clue about Ukraine suddenly dedicating their lives to it) has given Ukraine a massive opportunity. Money has been aided to Ukraine, that will help with pro-Ukraine education, and many people have started trying to learn Ukrainian. In the best possible scenario after the war, Ukraine (although possibly also devastated from the war) will have an enriched education, and with so many countries to aid would improve quickly, and hopefully a language renaissance. Due to so many people suddenly now knowing about Ukraine, tourism will increase as well. I wish the best for Ukraine (and Belarus too for that matter), with enriched history and a solidly stable language, no longer under Russian influence with few native Ukraine speakers. However with the good comes a bad: Russians are just normal people, like you and me - they don't necessarily want the war - and surprisingly few are actually hostile to Ukrainians (I've seen Russians and Ukrainians interact, and it's honestly so sweet, as if their countries haven't ever been against one another). Sadly, because of some guy (Putin or whoever thought the war was a good idea) above charging the country against Ukraine, without asking what the Russian public want, many Russians (innocent of the conflict, no hate towards Ukraine) have gotten antagonised and hated across the Internet. I am Bulgarian and have used my dad's YT account before (he has his name, which is Bulgarian ie: Slavic, as his username) to write comments. On a video unrelated to the war, I made a comment, unrelated to the war, and guess what some guy replied: they literally saw a Slavic name that looked "Russian" to them and literally damn replied to my comment "idk if you're Russian, your name looks Russian, but please stop the war". First of, he saw a Slavic name and instantly thought Russian no thought of consequence whatsoever. Second, like wtf do you expect me to do- go knock on Putin's door, saying "Hey stop the war pls, you're killing people" -"oh you're right, I'm sorry, okay I'll stop", like wtf.

1. Ukraine word - Not from borderlands. It means land/country. In Ukraina there is word Kraina - literally translates as country. You can say it's from word Kraj - translating like edge/border. I heard this a lot and It's true. But this word also translates as land. Like in Poland - Armia Krajowa. It's not a border army, it's home army. So, historians around the world, stop saying this nonsense. Bandera - never pledged to work with the nazis, he and his organization was acknowledged as freedom fighters in Nurnberg. Many soldiers did serve in wehrmacht and it was encouraged by OUN, not because they pledged or something else, but for military training. Oath of OUN-UPA was documented and it consisted only with pledges to fight for free Ukraine.

Engulfed is the correct term. In a utopian communist society, all are equal, and yet Russia plagues the idea with their fool-fool thinking of Russians being the "aryan" race among the slavs. Still today, we see those bastards thinking like that, trying to subjugate and erase the Ukrainians. The only wrong thing they did was trust the Russians... And as Ruddy said, just because some collaborated, does not mean all are fascists or communists.

i feel like your doing a lot of sanitization of Ukraine's history in this video, like the Cossacks were brutal bandits who commonly participated in pogrom's across Russia, or how you regurgitate the Nazi propaganda that the Holodomor was intentional when there is no evidence to support this, and you describe Stepan Bandera as if he just happened to be a Nazi when he was a proud collaborator, and the massacres of the insurgent forces are only brought up in a picture both of which are seen as national hero's and it is illegal in certain parts of Ukraine to criticize Bandera, or that these aren't fringe groups or individual's they are people who have been given support from the government and positions in it both before and during the invasion. and i understand why you are doing this you are trying to gain support for Ukraine and i think that is a good thing but when all of this is over the sanitization of the antisemitic parts of ukraine's history is only going to bolster these so called fringe groups, and i dont support putin (ukraine has a nazi problem but invasion is not the solution) but there was an air of impunity for bigoted violence in Ukraine before the invasion, if we pretend there just a minority it will only get worse after.

You have a great channel, i watched all of your videos on world history, and i was amazed by your art style and narration. But being very involved in the conflict here, i see your words on recent history in Ukraine as too superficial and curated by media propaganda, that is so much controlled by the west. Yes, you're depressed by things happening, we all are, i can understand that, no one likes wars. I was born in Ukraine and i have relatives there. So do yourself a favor, please, read more about NATO extension to the east, US-organised coupe in 2013-14 (like they did in many countries before), Donbass war, Donetsk shellings, that killed hundrends of childrens there. These things led to this war. If president is jewish really doesn't mean there's no nazism in Ukraine. Ukranian army is up to the neck in it. You can easily find proof by googling. Recent examples - hundreds of photos and videos of Ukranian POWs with swastika tattoos all over their bodies, with photos of nazi salute on their phones, photos of captured bases with swastikas everywhere. Look at Donetsk shelling of March 14, where cluster munitions were used, with 23 killed and 37 injured. All - civilians. Look at how ukranian army defend Mariupol. They haven't released civilians from the city to use them as human shield, placed heavy weaponry near civilian buildings, occupied their apartments. Its ISIS tactics. Google hundrends of interviews with Mariupol citizens (if you can find them translated to English of course...), whose relatives been killed there for speaking russian or just for no reason, for joy, by neonazis. You said that Babyn Yar was bombed, but it's a fake, Israeli journalist visited it next day. Don't trust Ukranian and western media, that translate Ukranian point. Russia is not in war with Ukraine, not Ukraine nor Russia declared war on each other. War means destroying all enemy's infrastructure - railway structure, bridges, communication, decision-making centres. Russia is not doing that, people were leaving to neighboring countries through railway, internet and mobile network is working. Russia is only destroying military targets. Russian natural gas is flowing through Ukraine to Europe, Russia is paying Ukraine for it's transit. Almost everyday we see in the news that some president visited Kiev. Why is this happening if all-out war is going on? People dying, there is a collateral damage, but it's nowhere near damage done by wars, organised by US. But it seems no one cared for those wars and haven't supported those people. Because western propaganda What is really happening - US is killing ukranians to do as much more damage to Russia as they can. They provoked and they are to blame for it. And it's haven't been adressed in your work.

My great grandpa comes from Ukraine! He was in WW1 as a behind the lines medic. Eventually everything he'd seen and done got to him and with the russians being pushed back he deserted home till the war was over. With the Russian revolution, many gangs roamed the Ukrainian country killing and robbing many. Eventually my great grandpa had enough of the poverty and murders and ended up getting a ticket to Canada with his wife and kids. They took a train up to the Baltics where they then took a boat to great Britain, and after that sailed to Canada. They ended up settling in Saskatchewan (as you mentioned) where we've lived to this day. There's much more to the story but I'm not much of a writer, so these are the basics of what happend. I'm glad you made this video so I can understand all that went on during these times.

Very oversymplified. "Polish opression" came from the cossac's raids against Ottoman empire. The Polish Crown that signed with Ottomans a pact to stop those raids was trying to enlist them into the army to keep them under discipline and stop the slaughter. Ofcourse the myths of opression is what we hear today becouse of the rebellions history was later mostly written by kreml that aim was to keep this land as faithful as possible. The fact is leading Cossacs was a polish nobleman while fighting against the rebellion was an Ukrainian magnate. There ofcourse was opression but not between Poles towards Cossacs(this is modern view of nationalism non existing back than) but more by magnates and other wealthy multiethnical elites towards poor pepole. You also skipped Polish Ukrainian alliance when we fought soviets together in 1920. History you see is not so one sided and simple as you present my friend.

І що за цей союз 1920 українцям довелось заплатити західними землями України на користь Польщі, а Польща ж у 1921 уклала Ризький мир із совєтами за спиною в УНР. Dziękujemy bardzo za to

Thanks, that's pretty much it. There are nuances, but in general everything is correct. I just want to add that there have always been Ukrainians, and we have our own language, and we have always been oppressed by all sorts of empires, we are a long-suffering people ...

Thinking of all th senior citizens in Ukraine who cannot be moved or cannot be moved without a major effort is painful. I think of my grandma in her last two years and can't even imagine. I also have think of those with special needs, especially the children, and all of the confusion this tragedy has caused. Sad doesn't begin to describe it. It's a great thing these channels, so many of which I have loved watching for years, are doing something to aid the people of Ukraine in their struggle against the Tyrant Putin.

What you presented as "polish renaissance", is laughably incorrect. The polish renaissance was based on the Warsaw Confederation from 1573, which was introducing the religious tolerance. And what you call the enforcement of catholicism, was simply the creation of the Uniate Church whose purpose wasn't catholicisation, but simply fighting off the influence of Russia. The patriarch of Moscow claimed the religious ownership over all of orthodox people, so Poland decided to counter it by proposing to the Ruthenians: "You might keep all of your orthodox traditions, just swear allegiance to the pope instead of to the muscovite patriarch. But the allegiance to a pope will be a mere formality, in everything else you will still be orthodox". Look, as a Pole I understand why the Cossacks disliked the polish noblemen, but trying to present it as a religious issue is just absurd.

As a Ukrainian and person who was born in Uman and thoroughly familiar with the history of these neighborhoods, I would say that Cossacks didn’t kill peasants. On the contrary, there was an uprising of Ukrainian peasants against the Polish nobility. In the spring of 1768, Cossacks led by Maksym Zaliznyak appeared in Kholodny Yar near Chigyrin. Later, the uprising covered the entire territory of the Kyiv and Bratslav voivodeships. Maksym Zaliznyak with several hundred Haydamaks captured a number of fortified cities: Zhabotyn, Smila, Cherkasy, Korsun, Bohuslav, Lysyanka. The rebels were joined by peasants and burghers who destroyed the estates of Polish magnates and nobles, inns, churches and Uniate churches. The lordship fled to Uman, which belonged to the magnate Franciszek Salesius Potocki and was considered a major trading post.

I wrote a huge comment with a lot of examples and things to look out for about Ukranian war, because fakes are mentioned in this video. I think that author's work is really great, i love his other videos, and i tried to show the other side. But it's been deleted by google auto-censorship in seconds. I tried to post it for a few times - deleted in seconds. There's no point to discuss anything on a platform with too much censorship. Hope this comment won't be deleted =)

Great video of the history Ukraine! I always thought about Ukraine as a lacking country to Europe but when the wind changes it changes my views on Ukraine, I love it when people fight for their freedom from oppression and when the Ukrainian people stepped up to the plate they did it with all they got against the rising threat that is Russia, may Ukraine be remembered not from books but in physical form, Slava Ukraina!
