💉The History of Vaccines: Killing Smallpox - Vaccines have been instrumental in our modern view of health and healthcare. But they haven't always been around and there's been more than some misinformation on what they are and how they work. So how did we even discover vaccines in the first place? It started with a disease that had plagued humanity for so long, it seemed like it was just a natural part of living. But thanks to the work of Edward Jenner, soon smallpox would become a disease known only to history. One of two diseases that humanity had managed to completely eradicate and all thanks to vaccines and vaccination.

Interesting fact: One of the reasons why Jenner was so gung ho about vaccination over variolation was because he was one of the few people whose variolation went wrong - he got full blown smallpox and suffered lifelong health problems thereafter. So he had personal reasons to find a safer alternative.

@Mercure250 4 года назад
The rebirth of smallpox could only happen if the virus in the labs gets accidentally released or something like that. There's a huge difference between illnesses like measles that had _almost_ been eradicated and those that completely have like smallpox. For the latter, widespread vaccination isn't necessary anymore, so even antivaxxers can't bring them back. Unless those who work in virology labs become antivaxxers (which is unlikely, because you need to have some knowledge and intelligence to get there), there's no danger.

I am slightly confused with that information. Because the variolization is mentioned in the Ayurveda. The injury to the cow may be a reason. But given the death rate and prevalence in ancient to modern time in Indian subcontinent I don't think people will dislike any treatment that may give them a fighting chance. When they mentioned multiple gods and goddesses for small pox that was no joke. We have many such regional deities in Hinduism. I think they were more at odds with the fact that cows would be stabled and bred specifically to produce vaccines. "Was" must be the most lovely word in the English language. It tells you everything you need to know about our ingenuity and compassion as a species. If you look up smallpox today, often the first two words of the definition will read "smallpox was". "Was". We collectively gave it a fucking roundhouse kick and yelled: "stay down, you c**t!" And it stayed down. Exurb1a, *Misery was*

Anti-vaxxers were at the core of the Tyrolean Rebellion in 1809 when Napoleon defeated Prussia and the King of Bavaria tried to establish France's vaccination policies in the new lands it had gained following that war. Ended with almost 20,000 casualties. So yeah, anti-vaxxers have always been out there causing problems.

For a story about using orphans to keep a virus alive this is a surprisingly wholesome story about humanity working together
@Irdesce
@Irdesce 9 месяцев назад
I personally didn't even find it all that morally questionable. For one thing those orphans got to get vaccinated and it was the only practical method i can think of to bring the cow pox with them that I can think of that would be available. Those orphans getting cow pox was literally a good thing for them.
@lucaskp16

it was not a mistake is you need to put a small number of people to help millions then I is hard to argue that is inmoral. more so on orphans where nobody outside them is gonna care.

No mention of Dr. Karel Raška? He was the head of the smallpox eradication effort in the 1960s and his disease surveillance method allowed the WHO to track the disease down to the very last patient. Before Dr. Raška proposed his plan, the WHO believed the eradication effort would never succeed in the developing countries.

Guys, can we just work together and get rid of more diseases like how we eradicated smallpox?
@varyolla435
@varyolla435 2 года назад
Would that we could. DA Henderson was the American epidemiologist who organized and oversaw the global Smallpox eradication effort. He wrote a book about the experience. Yet even back then with the scourge of Smallpox fresh in everyone's minds he faced considerable resistance. Many believed he would fail and he had to contend with doubters and politicos who initially opposed the effort. Nothing comes easy unfortunately. The world has not yet learned to work together.

But at least I can understand why that'd be the case in the beginning. New medical techniques from a small-town doctor. Slow spreading of information about and understanding of the process and results to the general public. Disastrous "replicated" procedures by other doctors. At least, the skepticism was understandable. What's the excuse now?
