Mannlicher is probably the most underrated Gun maker. There are a few others but Mannlicher needs some credit.

You are right about Mannlicher not being recognized as being as genius as he was. But I can asure you that at least in Austria his Name is still very famous amongst people who shoot for hunting and sporting. As the original Mannlicher-Schönauer was produced until 1972 in its sporting form. It is described as the finest bolt action sporting rifle by some, and when the production stopped because by that time it was more expensive to produce than for what it was sold for, Austrian hunters were very disappointed. The successor, the Steyr-Mannlicher obviously reused the Mannlicher name more than 60 years after Mannlicher himself died when introduced in 1969, it came into military use as the Steyr SSG-69, an excellent sniper rifle. Heck, even its successor the Mannlicher SBS-96 recycled his name in 1996, and its variants do up to this day.

Another great video , guys! I have an M1895/30 Stutzen and have always wondered why more countries did not adopt it. It is one of the few bolt guns that allow you to cock from the shoulder and thus keep your sight picture for follow up shots. Someone said it was because the locking lugs were too weak. Having fired a lot of the 8*56R cartridges, I can tell you that they hold up just fine, so weakness was not the reason. Great little rifles that kick like mules.

The Yugoslavs didn't think it was weak, they modified a bunch of them to shoot 8mm Mauser. I have one and haven't seen any issues with the locking lugs....

PCShogun I agree, the recoil is punishing. I have one too and I'd love to start reloading so I can load it down some. Plus 8x56r is kind of pricey but I love my stutzen so much.

First I want to thank you for all the research you do so you can present it to us. You mentioned looking over notes in other languages and checking them on Google translate at 2 am and that must be very hard to do but it is very much appreciated. I love that kind of information but lack the resources to discover much myself so thanks for your hard work. You also mentioned hand picking your carbine for its smooth action. I was just curious where you find these rifles. I always hear of people getting great deals on them but I can never find them. Lastly, I think these last 3 episodes have made me appreciate Mannlicher much more than I ever did before. I love how you include information about the inventors too because I am training to be a gunsmith and its interesting to see just how smart these men where and how they came up with ideas and developed them. Keep up the good work guys! I'm glad your doing so well with the Patreon and the posters. Glad I am getting a poster before you run out!

Thanks for pointing out the difference between the long and short rear adjustable sights. I ave an M95 carbine of both variations like you displayed @ 21:40. I was beating my head in trying to figure out the appropriate designation for the differences. Your explanation helped immensely. There are tons of these rifles out there, and many seemed to be listed with the wrong name by vendors.

Othais, I have one of these Buda, 1918 proofed Stutzens with a venthole on the bolt. The bolt head is numbered, however, which I thought was a hallmark of a Bulgarian contract rifle bolt. Sadly, the bolt head number doesn't match the rest of the rifle. Side sling swivels only...

Mannlicher may not be known around the world, and even in Austria these days, but almost everybody older than 30 here in Austria links the name Mannlicher with a Rifle. Because most of Rifles around beiing it Hunting Rifles or the ones our Military used (uses) were/are from Steyr. And Most people called them "Steyr-Mannlicher" even if the company name and the rifle name had changed. And if someone had a "Steyr Mannlicher" hunting rifle it was always considered of high quality. (Most of the time only outclassed by the handfitted, handmade Rifles of Ferlach)

nirfz here in the states when someone says mannlicher I immediately think of a stock that encloses the whole length of the barrel. I think that might be because ruger marketed a European stock 1022 as a mannlicher styled stock.

I found one of these Mannlicher carbines at one of my local gun shops. I don't recall what model it is but I only paid a cool $125 for it. I personally thought it was a steal and bought it on sight after a small inspection. i'm going to shoot it once then make it a wall hanger for my man cave.

I just walked out of the gun show with one of these beautiful Stutzen M95s. This show is the only reason I even knew what it was but she's a thing of beauty. Haven't shot her yet but the bolt is relatively slick for one that was rechambered for 8x56r.

I have an M95 in 8mm by 56mm Hungarian. It was made by Steyer. I shoot lead bullet hand loads in it and recoil is very light.

I have the 1890 carbine, side sling version. Love it, but I do download it a bit, as it's getting old. I find the bigger sight works better with my astigmatism vision problem. Mine's still in 8x50r

Winchester making a guest appearance, boy did he get big quick. Great video to finish out the Mannlichers, this was a big gap in my what I thought I knew about WW1 armaments, keep up the good work. When Mae was firing the '90 carbine and it has extraction binding on the second round, is that a common trouble with all straight pulls if you don't get a solid starting jerk on the action or was it specific to that rifle?

Othais and Mae, another great historical piece. You get to study and shoot some of the coolest and arguably most beautiful guns ever made (also some real dogs, too. Eye of the beholder, right?). Love the videos and info...! But always causes questions.... I have an unconverted carbine that now has ONLY side slings(the upper one is a bar) and the rear barrel band is 5” from the front band that has the bayonet stud, but there is an Arsenal plug where the rear under sling would be. No dates on the receiver - only what looks like a capital E in a circle/oval off to the right side. There is a “15” in 2 places under the receiver and on barrel that can only be seen with the stock removed. Would they have converted a 1915 stutzen to a cavalry carbine ? I see no references with a mention of an “E”. The gun has the short sight and a serial number of only 4 numerals- NO LETTER SUFFIX. Any thoughts what this is?

On the note of remarked rear sights, theres actually one I have my eyes on at the moment that appears to have been an original carbine and the rear sights were never changed after the S-conversion

Does anyone know with the s marked 95s if there is a way to date it? I have one with 40 mark an the chamber and barrel and a k on the but plate and on the stock is I believe 1430x and 4035 on opposite side...thanks just subscribed and really like your content very helpful and full of great information!! EXCELLANT EPISODE !!!! Looks like my rifle is a 95/30 cutdown. I haven't been able to figure out what cartridge it is yet ,Barrel isn't S stamped. and front sight isn't pressed on. I'd send you some pics, but tube doesn't allow it. Overall excellent series . You and May ROCK IT !!!

Yep, also where the had made the cut on the stock the glue didn't hold well co I have to redo that part, because it's loose and slips up and down. There are some holes where dole rods were maybe used in the glueing process.

Are you sure the 8x56R bullet diameter isn't .329? I seem to remember this reloading for this cartridge because they are a bit hard to come by. Apologies if somebody else already mentioned in the comments.

Go look into austrian stuben musik...how hunting (poaching, of course) the chamois in Austria with the "stutzerl" was just so popular or at least admired of sorts. As the song is telling you could easily hide that stutzerl in the vinegar barrel when the gendarmerie was searching your house and they wouldn't find it. Thats where SM sold a bunch of those rifles. "Das Gamserl schwarz und braun" go look for that song

My late grandfather was in the Austrian-Hungarian mounted cavalry in WWI. I found this video fascinating (when I first watched it a few years ago). I have been unable to find a Karabiner from that era. Am I likely to ever see a legit one come up for sale, and if so, where should I be looking?

I call shenanigans on the mannlicher being the "smoothest" of the straight pulls, I'm sorry, but the Ross mkII is by far smoother, plus no clip or charger required! (Shenanigans in ASL is very fun and useful thing to learn btw)

Guys, what basic info and origin can you share about the rifle over May's shoulder, the lowest horizontal one? I have two of those and we've never been able to track down anything solid. Ive never even seen a photograph of another one actually with the same exact details (bolt shape, size, mag, sights) so I only assume it's the same chamber. Any info would be very well appreciated. Total mystery in the family for 50 years or more. Good work btw.

its just crazy to think how much money was spent during this time for dozens of different small arms variations. I mean every country had at least 30-40 different rifle versions between 1880 and 1918

As a matter of fact, several years ago when they were brought out for US sale, I paid a whopping $79 bucks a piece. Now they go for around $250.

I have the Austrian and Hungarian? M95's. They are so light and short, to me they seem a little short in the butt stock for me. They shoot great bud the recoil is fairly severe. All in all a great rifle. To carry it is a breeze. A great hunting rifle.

I plan on getting a M95 soon, but I have to ask since I'm curious and I've heard a lot about the stiffness of the 8x56mmR conversions. Is there anything that can be done about it? I keep hearing how it was caused by the poor quality of the hand-fitting during the conversions and I was wondering if there were ways to alleviate the issues.

Careful hand fitting I'm afraid. So you'd need an experienced gunsmith with a lot of time on that particular gun.

According to an old text I have, Von Mannlicher wasn't as well financially backed by his government as other firearms makers such as Mauser. This could be another reason his work is left in the dark corners of history.

Great video, I bought an M95 carbine a few years ago at a local auction mostly because it had the most beautiful tiger striped walnut stock I have ever seen on a military rifle. Scrounged up 100 rounds for it because a rifle without ammo is just a club. (Can I get an Amen, brothers?) Anyway, this video really makes me want to get it out of the back of the safe and to the range. Has anyone shot one of these and what is your opinion?

Fun. It does let you know that it is there when you fire. I find that, like most military weapons, minute of angle is a dream that will probably not happen. It is reasonably accurate for hunting purposes. The best bit about it is that it is very light and is easy to use, even in dense, dense brush.
