Britains most famous 1911 user was TE Lawrence. His brother purchased two while visiting New York city kept one for himself and shipped the other to his brother who became known as Lawrence of Arabia who used it. Both men had been on the Oxford University rifle team and were excellent shots. The film Lawrence of Arabia inaccurately portrayed Lawrence as using a tevolver.

Why would a film maker, depicting a British Gentleman in the distant past with some kind of Modern looking standard autoloading 45 acp colt pistol? When we can give him a much more refined and classy and traditional British Revolver appropriate for the era!?! That Colt rubbish is Far too advanced for before World War Two. Did you see what they used in the trenches of WW1? Single shot rifles and single action pistols! They couldn't buy enough of them and pushed them into service. Then realised they were crap and rolled out newer Magazine guns, then they invented machine guns and everyone got one, and they dug trenches, then they had to learn to attack trenches and pistols were winners, so they invented the double action revolver and GOD Moses Browning sold his machine guns to the USA and his pistol 1911, and we went to war strapped them to the British Tanks and won the war of the slow to adapt Europeans! No. Sorry revisionist historians. But actually we had all the guns of world war 1 before the war began, except the paris gun: that was a one off specialist gun. The problem with war is it eats your people and their equipment and about 100 bullets or shells for every person you manage to kill. And you MUST replace those or you will be unable to inflict the same cost on your foe. There were not enough guns. Never enough guns. Not even the USA which had been preparing for joining the war for Years with Europe's Gold to spend, was prepared, nor had enough guns when they joined the war. Which was why last episode they had barely confirmed the creation of 6 new supply chains for new 1911s when the war suddenly ended, and the contracts had to be revoked. And yes. Lawrence had a 1911, and it probably served him well, just like it did soldiers in the trenches.

A case of historically accurate but "unrealistic." Similar to if you had a movie about Roman gladiators and had a scene where they get a sponsor from a local merchant guild or a film about Lewis and Clark where someone uses a heavy caliber air rifle to down over a dozen targets in under a minute (something they frequently did to impress/intimidate new native tribes they met).

50:10 one clear advantage, the Webley has over the Colt is that due to its hideous and odd construction anytime you possess it you’ll have a low grade burning rage, which can be directed into increased ferocity in beating your enemy to death with the pistol, when/if it jams. While the Colt due to its incredible lines and fine engineering and balance. You realize that that is too good of a death for your enemy, and a front to JMB himself. And you’re force to holster it and get your e-tool to beat them to death, which is a much slower operation.

I'm sorry for picking. But I noticed that the seal on Mae's hearing pro had a huge gap due to the hat and glasses. As someone who has shot and run gas equipment for decades I've discovered a few things, from my Dr mostly. Anything that breaks the seal on muffs are negating the dB reduction ratings, even if the glasses are marketed as ear pro compatible. Always double up ear pro or get glasses that have angled lenses so they can be placed above the muffs and still be eye pro. Also if you have a 20dB reduction muff, and your rifle is putting out 170dB, you are still getting 150dB of damage to your hearing over the hours of range time or work day.

You know, I feel like a big dum-dum. Because as this episode mentioned, yet again, an instance of a Navy being influential in a small arms purchase and development situation, I, also yet again, found myself wondering "Why does the Navy need so many small arms? Surely they'd be more influential in the purchase of big cannons and machine guns. Not much call for small arms on a ship." Except this time I went a step further "What would they even need them for? Boarding I guess. But wouldn't they just let the Marines with their guns do that?... ... ... OH. Right! The Marines are IN the Navy. That's who needs all those small arms!"
@51WCDodge
@51WCDodge 8 месяцев назад
The Royal Navy, AKA for varying reasons, The Andrew. Is the Senior military service in UK. It also was profitable, as the doctrine at the time, a long carry over, was 'Why sink a ship? We can capture it and sell it to the Goverment, and every sailor involved, gets a share. The RN is also responsible for the Royal Marines, or as the reply goes when asked, 'What does the RM on the shoulder tab mean. Real Marines'. The RN is also a leader in use of modern technology, including tanks and and aircraft. Being independent, and throughout history being first with boots on the ground,policing the Empire, showing the flag etc. We want our own kit, not Army left overs.
@F1ghteR41
@F1ghteR41 8 месяцев назад
The surprising thing here is that they went for the right-handed gun shooting quite a potent cartridge. Cutlass was still carried well into the 1940, and the predominant doctrine at least since the early nineteenth century was to use it in the dominant hand, so your handgun needs to be lefty-friendly. And with steel ships all around, ricochets were a real problem, so there's really no need to use potent cartridges in your handguns, as long as you don't expect to use your pistols in land combat, for which case a rifle would be better anyway, even for an officer, as the Second Anglo-Boer war had shown.
@RvEijndhoven
@RvEijndhoven 8 месяцев назад
@@F1ghteR41 Arguably .45 ACP would be an ideal cartridge for shipboard fighting, because it's potent, sure, but it's also relatively slow and heavy and doesn't really have much 'bounce' to it when hitting hard surfaces, so it doesn't ricochet nearly as much as many smaller pistol cartridges.
@F1ghteR41
@F1ghteR41 8 месяцев назад
@@RvEijndhoven But how many people could've made good use of it in the off-hand? .32 ACP, as used by many navies by the time of WW2, is much milder in terms of recoil, and since double-stack pistol magazines were already available by 1907-08 (see Savage M1907 for example), one can reach relatively high ammo capacity with less difficulty.

@@samiam619 When I'm blueing a handgun I'll use the oil recommended by the people who make the blueing solution. But mostly I love Ballistol.

If they had managed to fix the Ross rifles, primary issue of the cartridges getting stuck, could it have stayed in service for longer than it did?

If it had been given time to work out the issues and spared the political BS of "must be Canadian" it could have been.

The British would be pushing to standardize regardless as soon as they had enough SMLEs. But there is no real reason they couldn't have kept the Ross rifle. In the big picture, a Ross that was functioning properly was certainly good enough to fill the role and production was sufficient to keep the Canada Corps equipped with them.

I came into this thinking it was going to be mostly Norwegian with some minor mention of other countries and Britain's .44 1911. I WAS WRONG.

Do you have any idea why Canada was specifically excluded from Colt's exclusive territory? Between being in both North American and part of the British Empire it seems strange. Especially with Canada having a long history of buying Colt pistols
