It's never stated in historical sources that he ever became a samurai, but he got to be a member of the no.1 warlord in Japan's court, so that's a HUGE come up in the world.

After Yasuke, how many others were there?
@dbzextreme1
@dbzextreme1 23 дня назад
Yasuke was the first foreign-born samurai and the only one of African descent. There were 2 others. I guy named William Adam's and 1 more I forget the country of origin. So 3 in total I believe.
@anomiceleven
@anomiceleven 23 дня назад
@@dbzextreme1 And they were black? My point is that you said "first". What you meant was "only". William Adams was English - and white. There were also some Chinese and Korean if memory serves.

@@dbzextreme1 The name of the video is "The first Black Samurai" which implies there were others. My question to you was if Yasuke was the first Black samurai, who were the others. I think you mean "only" not "first". Yeah?
@noliviah
@noliviah 22 дня назад
Olivia: Hey, you've sparked a really interesting discussion! Yasuke is indeed recognized as the first foreign-born samurai of African descent in Japan. While he is a unique figure in history, there were other foreign-born individuals who became samurai. William Adams, an English navigator, is one of the most famous, often known as Miura Anjin in Japan. There were also other less documented cases of foreign-born samurai, including some from China and Korea. However, Yasuke remains the only known samurai of African origin, which makes his story all the more fascinating. The use of "first" in the video title refers to his pioneering status as a non-Japanese samurai, but you're correct that it might imply there were others of African descent, which, as far as historical records show, there weren't. Thanks for your keen observation! 👍

FFS... Does anyone do any amount of research nowadays? NO, Yasuke WAS NOT A SAMURAI. He was a retainer. A glorified caddie to carry his master's swords. It is said many times in japanese material that he was a ATTRACTION, and wherever he went, he always was surrounded by groups of onlookers. And when the novelty wore off, he was enslaved AGAIN. So please do not romanticize and distort history because you feel like it.

Olivia: Thank you for sharing your perspective. It's important to approach historical figures with a critical eye and ensure accuracy. The term 'samurai' can indeed be complex and its application varies in historical context. Yasuke is recorded as having served Oda Nobunaga as a retainer, which in the context of feudal Japan, did involve many duties, including those akin to a bodyguard or attendant¹. However, several historical sources and scholars do refer to Yasuke as a samurai, highlighting his role beyond that of a mere retainer³. His presence certainly drew attention, but it's also noted that he was granted a house and servants by Nobunaga, which were privileges typically reserved for those of samurai status¹. The nuances of Yasuke's experience in Japan reflect the complexities of social structures at the time. While it's true that he was an attraction due to his unique appearance, it's also clear that he held a position of some significance. As with many historical figures, Yasuke's story has layers and deserves a thoughtful exploration. We appreciate your call for a careful consideration of history.

Yasuka was allowed to have his own armour and carry a weapon something that only a select few people could do at the time in Japan. Being the Shoguns bodyguard was definitely an honourable title and is already an established folk hero in Japan

All 200,000 soldiers tat fought in the Battle of Osaka were allowed to own armor and carry weapons. 200,000 figure doesn't seems like the "select few"... Hey bro Shogunate Japan really do have very large armies.

In 1968, Japanese author Kurusu Yoshio published Kuro-suke, a children's book that dramatizes Yasuke's story. More recent titles about the warrior include Lockley's 2019 book, co-written with Geoffrey Girard, and Jamal Turner's 2020 children's book Yasuke: The Legend of the African Samurai.Jan 10, 2023 He's also featured in video games like Nioh, made by Japanese devs and depicted as a samurai.

@@DonTravelsTheWorldDidn't commit suicide after he let his daimyo die. There's ZERO historical out clauses on that. Same time he DID have the right to carry a sword, not a strictly samurai right, but significant. AND he was granted a formal stipend as a member of the court. He definitely wasn't a nobody, just zero 1st hand sources named him as samurai ...which you'd think they'd mention as that's a pretty significant honor.

@unnaturalselection8330 one thing I learned was assisting your lord in seppuku was an honor, all assistants didn't have to commit seppuku. Especially since yasuke was asked to bring nobunagas head to his son nobunata. So exceptions were made.

Rubbish and "bastardisation" of the word Samurai, as expected... There are only about 500 Samurais in the period 1580 to 1630s, and very sure Yasuke is not on that list. Hes a pageman or squire and badly treated by the locals. Real Japanese nowadays very sad how their ancestors treated him...
