I mean, culture can be defined by insider and outside, and for a lot of people this was their exposure to Scandinavian culture. If Walmart associates started invading Australia and that was their only exposure to the United States, then they would call the US the Walmart civilization and they wouldn’t be wrong given that a part of the culture involved that invasion. Is their complexity and nuance? For sure. But the story we have in history and popular culture exists for a reason too.

@sflaningam7680 5 лет назад
@@GojiraGhoul While Saint Nick is the reason name is Santa Claus, Odin remains the O.G. Christmas is actually an amalgamation of the Roman Saturnalia and the Norse Yuletide. At the end of Yuletide, which lasted from December first to the Winter Solstice, Odin would ride down on his eight legged steed and distribute fortunes for the new year depending on offerings and good deeds done. The deeds had to be done simply because it was right thing. So we've got an elderly deity, with an all seeing eye and every bird on earth to cover his blind spots, who lives very far north, has the Dwarfs ofNidavellir as workers, and during December is taking stock of your charitable acts. "He sees when you are sleeping. He knows when you're awake. He knows if you've been bad or good, so be good for goodness' sake." Saint Nick was used as Odin's stand in or replacement when Christmas became a gift giving holiday, because of the Christian "No Gods except Jesus' Dad" thing. Nick filled the role nicely, being the patron saint of children, sailors, thieves, and prostitutes, and giving his first gifts by being as sneaky as the All-Father. Yuletide is also where we get the use of the pine tree and the mistletoe. As for why Santa's fat, blame the Coke Cola company!

Um.. actually about Rus - it was not a colony , but an east Slavic kingdom , well proto-kingdom . Scandinavians were a key part of noble society primarily because of trade roots . Also there's half-legendary story of "Summon of Varyags" (I don't know official English translation but in Russian it's called "Призвание варягов") summary of this story - In the time of turmoil the Slav people summoned a Scandinavian nobility to rule over them . We don't know very much about it , because we have only one historical manuscript that describes this period in the history of Rus ("The Tale of Past Years") . But it definitely wasn't a colony
@LouisKing995
@LouisKing995 6 лет назад
Konrad Kruk Well the word Rus likely comes from the old Norse term for “the men who row” and is likely linked to Roslagen, the Swedish coastal region that the Rus came from. I don’t know if you would call it a “Colony” but it was definitely founded by Norse settlers, and no such kingdom existed there prior to their arrival.

Calling them 'vikings' is a bit like how muslims referred to Europeans as 'Crusaders'. ISIS still does this in their propaganda, decrying the western establishment as 'crusader culture.' If you imagine a world where European christianity declined whilst Islam rose as the dominant ideology of academia, then we might have referred to medieval Europe as 'Crusader civilisation' or the 'crusader age,' implicitly overlooking *everything else* going on in Europe apart from the crusades.

A viking (or vikingr) simply refereed to a sea traveller. It didn't mean "raider". The fact that they did raid places was beside the matter and due to their views of innangarðr and utangarðr. Innangarðr (literally meaning "inner enclosure/land/home/group/world"..it's a complicated word) consisting of everything they knew, respected, and thought to be civil. It's the "inner circle" while utangarðr was the "outer circle". It was the opposite, the "outside" of everything, and this made it right for the taking (to them) because they didn't view them as "civil", or in the favour of their deities(?)* The nordic people were very clean compared to hydrophobic European and had much more equal right when it came to the sexes, and even slaves, so I honestly can't blame them for finding Eurpoeans to be "uncivil" despite their polished appearances. Not to mention they made themselves needlessly uncomfortable x.x *though, as a pagan myself, believe "mythology" were merely abstract stories/explanations about life and the universe that evolved over time (through the warping of the original) until it was completely misunderstood later on - like with most mythologies. If interested, I do have some proof for this. And, yes, I know you make brief mention of this. As a lover of ancient languages and beliefs (and their connections to the modern) I felt I should give that distinction.

And having been to the archaeological site in Newfoundland (L'anse aux Meadows) where the Norse settlement was, coinciding with the 1000th Anniversary (give or take) voyage when one of Leif Erikson's descendants captained a replica voyage (in Longboats from Iceland by way of Greenland- they might've started in Norway...? I think Iceland, but its been a few decades). Its quite remarkable to see the relics of the first European settlement in the Americas (and to hear about their issues with the Skraelings)

Comically, I was recommended one of your (Blue) videos while watching Shad. I then binge watched everything you and Red did starting about two weeks ago. I have no life but now I have a lot of historical knowledge. Two other channels that work well: Skallgrim and Metatron.

Very very good video, and quite needed too. Could I take the occasion to kindly ask you considering doing a video of the Egla (the saga of Egill Skallagrimsson)? The guy is not only one of the biggest badass that ever was soguligr, but also one of Iceland's first settler, and travelled through the whole scandinavian world. He is also, incidentally, the most skilled poet of the Norse civilisation, and the saga is actually build as a setting to his best work. It can be a hard read, especially for one that is not especially proficient on the very special kind of storytelling used in sagas, but it is certainly worth reading. And I know you could do very good things out of, if you wanted to.

If you want to be part of a group of people that care a lot about and reenact the medieval/renaissance times you should check out the Society for Creative Anachronism (or the SCA). There are many kingdoms all over the world. It is also a great way to research the garb and lifestyles of period people.

I have a hypothesis: the "Sea Peoples" that supposedly caused the Bronze Age Collapse of the 1170s BC could have been the Bronze Age equivilent of Vikings; they could have been a sea faring people with the tendency to reuse what they pillaged more than they built their own things, hence why we have so few artifacts and thus know so little about them.

My Mom found out we had viking heritage, but till she saw that history channel show, she thought they were just explorers because her knowledge of Vikings was apparently relegated to that time they stumbled upon America after getting lost. I had to tell her that they were basically the original pirates and brutal raiders.
@emblanotitsmcgee5298
@emblanotitsmcgee5298 6 лет назад
No, she would not have found out she had viking haritage. She would have found out she had Scandinavian haritage. Unless she can confirm a few hundred years of Scandinavian relatives, which is unlikely, she wouldn't even be able to guess she has "Viking" haritage. Unless she belongs to some fancy nobel house, I doubt it, especially is she's American since most Swedes pissed off to America due to starvation not very long ago, and they won't have any records. The furthest back you can even trace my family lineage is sometime in the early-mid 1700s and I'm 100% Swedish, so I call bullshit on the basis of your statement being highly missleading.

My ancestors we're vikings apparently. (I might mispell stuff here k, im swedish) alot of useless stuff has been passed down in my family for a long loong loooong time, like there's this weird sword my grandpa has and a few weird stones with weird text on it, yeah you get it. Also, my last name is nord, wich literally means 'north' or 'norse' or whatever it it :') my family always says its like a really old name or yeah someting like that. Anyways, the reason i typed all of this is bcz i like apple pies from mcdonalds. Yeah
