What a fantastic collection. Was watching the Pop Goes The 60s channel in a vid where he shows his immense vinyl collection and thought who else has something like this? Which brought back here. Haven't seen a vid up in awhile, hope all is well.

Way to go. Chat GPT is here and you have been courageous to engage with it. I for one, would love see what it had to say about well known writers/critics/reviewers This may just be your best video of all. Sone may be less open to bring Chat GPT into the conversation but it is present and yet another source of so called expertise. Molto grazie!

It seems AI is part of life these days. No denying. People are using it to write books, exam papers and even for singing /live performances via autotune. There have been good results with diagnosis of illness from some reports I have read. Glad you enjoyed the video and many thanks for stopping by to watch. Much appreciated.

hello retro, all these jazz artists are wonderful i think! i do have some of these artists lps in my collection. i do enjoy jazz, especially be bop and cool west coast jazz. the saxaphone is probably my favorite instrument when it comes to jazz, but i also love piano and guitar, i just enjoy jazz in genereal, especially 50s and 60s style jazz. there is just too many decent jazz artists to pick a couple of favorites as they all have done some great work in their time. this was a great video and a lot of fun checking out all these classic jazz musicians, thanks for sharing once again, very well done!

Couldn't agree more. There are just too many wonderful jazz artists out there and the genre stretches so far back the 1920s. Great to hear your thoughts on jazz. Always fun to know what other people prefer. Many thanks for watching.

I would have thought Herb Alpert would be one of the richest musicians as he co-founded A&M Records ("A "stands for Alpert and "M "stands for his partner Jerry Moss. The logo is the trumpet). A&M was bought out by Polygram Records in 1989. Alpert and his Tijuana Brass were everywhere in the 60s.Amazing that "Summertime" is the most-covered song ever. Thanks for these interesting vids on AI. I enjoyed this one on jazz the most.

This is really a great series. Surprised Ramsey Lewis and Louis Armstrong were not mentioned. Even more surprising is how AI wrongly named Dizzy Gillespie as one of the best jazz guitarist. I think ChatGPT did get it right naming Kenny G, Jarrett and Corea as over-rated. Befitting nice jazz music played in the background too.
@retromusings

AI certainly can get things wrong. Dizzy was not an accomplished guitarist. Glad you liked the background music. Many thanks for stopping by and watching.

Herb Alpert was the coolest guy back in the day, who also produced Sergio Mendes and The Carpenters. My parents always played Herb, Brasil-66, Burt Bacharach, but also Miles, Brubeck, etc. Great seeing Grant Green, but he is far from underrated..... Ramsey Lewis is my favorite jazz pianist. All through the 80's, when in Chicago, we'd go to (the old) Back Room on Rush Street and listen to jazz for hours. Thanks! 👍
@retromusings
@retromusings 5 месяцев назад
Oh wow. Rush Street was quite the scene. I had the good fortune of visiting the clubs there back in the early 90s for live music. It was such fun. I think ChatGPT must base its answers on sales volume. I think Brasil-66 was much more jazz than Alpert's music albeit Brasil-66 got into doing covers of other artists' songs too. Thanks for watching.

"John Coltrane and Johnny Hartman" is a great album; I like the opening track especially, "They Say it's Wonderful." As for ChatGPT's seemingly rote responses: it's a computer. It has no imagination. 😁 And, like you, I wouldn't depend upon Chap GPT for recommendations; I've done okay finding music I like the old-fashioned ways, and I bet you have too.

Interesting to see what Chat GPT does with your questions. I agree with your insights on what may have caused it to reach some of its conclusions. When I think jazz, and I am a big jazz lover, Herb Alpert and Kenny G do not appear. Easy listening might be a good topic to try with GPT and see if HA and KG appear again. It may as well have mentioned Al Hirt. Anyway, keep up the good work and great videos. Perhaps you will ask the same questions in another year or two to see how this AI method develops.
@retromusings

I agree. I would never place Herb Alpert or Kenny G in the jazz category. They seem more like pop/easy listening to me. It was a fun experience doing these videos. I will definitely give AI-themed videos a good rest now after doing 3 of these! Many thanks for watching.

Such a shame that Grant Green's popularity came late. Kenny Burrell is my #1 and Grant Green next. I'm not much of a ranker.. This was easy, though. Good mention for the great Hampton Hawes 🎵

Thanks for sharing your thoughts about these jazz picks. I too am not much of a "ranker" as music, similar to art, is so subjective.
@jtsrecordroom3963

Right.. I see music as art. Players ( musicians ) rarely get into a ranking thing with each other or other genres. It's geared for more analytical fans and collectors, I feel. It is fun to take a shot at it from time to time, and then change the order next week ! Haha 🎵

Wonderful vid! Interesting answers! I don't enjoy The G Man lol! Kenny G's music is too smooth and simple. I think Mark Murphy is the most underrated jazz singer. I love his singing on songs like On the Red Clay and Peacocks. I did a swampy blues cover of Summertime on my channel. Such a great song. That's great that the Ellington estate is doing so well. He was born in the 1800's, I think! I love his music. U showed lots of awesome pictures!! I'll check out the underrated peeps that I never heard of. Cheers : ))

First thanks for this story. Very interesting results. I am surprised at the lack of fushion jazz listed, even if they give Weather Report a nod. Also kinda surprised that Keith Jarret was deemed the most over rated jazz pianist. I would have thought it would be Bob James given the opinion Chat GBT gave Kenny G & Herb Albert (and I enjoy all of these players). Keep doing your great videos!

@retromusings 5 месяцев назад
Oh. That's a very interesting point about fusion music. Yes Bob James did the theme song (Angela) for the "Taxi" tv series and it was featured in his "Touchdown" album which was crazy popular. He didn't even get a mention at all. Go figure. Many thanks for commenting and watching.

Yes for sure. Dizzy Gillespie was not an accomplished guitar player so that revealed quite badly how Chatgpt can get things wrong. It's concerning in my view that autotune is used more and more for singers and live performances. Thanks for watching.

As good as Ella was in the 1960s she was even better in the 30s - 50s. By the 60s she was leaning heavily on covering hits of her own and others'. Often re-doing her own hits but with orchestras. In trying to figure out who else it could be (for 60s vocalist) I guess there really isn't anybody else with as much output as Ella - even in the 60s her appearances and records were numerous. So it ends up being a "lifetime achievement award" for her even though she was past her prime. Beyond The Missouri Sky was one of my favorites when I first started to stream music. 'Innovative' was another word it threw out often when describing an artist by saying that they were or weren't innovative. It would be interesting to dig deeper into how the AI determined that an artist was innovative or not and if it could give examples of innovation. You sure do make some great videos. Pleasant, informative and willing to show what you learned in the course of making the video. Whereas most of us are eager to show only what we already knew. Hats off to you.
@retromusings
@retromusings 5 месяцев назад
I couldn't agree more about your assessment about Ella in the 1960s. Her 1972 "Dream Dancing" album comes to mind. All remakes of Cole Porter songs. This is why I am convinced Chatgpt based its pick on sales. She must have sold a lot of records in the 60s even though she was past her prime singing days. Glad you enjoyed the video and many thanks for your support by stopping by to watch. Hope to see you again.

You just can't give Chat GPT much credibility. Dizzy Gillespie didn't play the guitar as it said. Chat GPT is just a machine without a soul. For a really great introduction to jazz, I recommend watching the Ken Burns Jazz documentary and/or reading the companion book to the film. Though the documentary focuses on the invention and evolution of jazz and isn't perfect, it has a very dear human touch that no AI algorithm could create.
@retromusings

Chatgpt naming Dizzy Gillespie is so way off. Anyone unfamiliar with his music might just believe it. Autotune is being used more and more for singers, live performances etc. I find it alarming. I have heard about Burns' doco on jazz. I will have a look for it online. Many thanks for watching.
