Yes, this is an interesting debate! Seems like one of those situations in which, if you learned to switch grips early in life, or are willing to take the (Extensive) time needed to learn to switch grips later, it can a more efficient and repeatable volley motion. Ryan at 2minutetennis and others who are grips switchers show a more horizontal (flat) swing path with a changed grip on both sides. But a continental grip requires more vertical (downward) motion because the racket face is more open. But that can make the ball float or land in the net if you don’t get it right. I know OTI recommends a subtle (bottom of your hand) grip shift too. But Gigi Fernandez, who won 17 doubles grand slams and is obviously an elite volleyer, does NOT recommend a grip switch. Worth experimenting with!
Seems like 2 minute tennis did a volley video and was saying most professional players don’t use a continental grip. 🤷🏼♂️ He was saying they go slightly eastern or to the right for the forehand and right the opposite for the backhand. This was the first time I had heard this. I have always heard time after time to use the continental. Great video!!! I’ve been looking for volley videos.
