Water and waste management utility Hamburg Wasser is reducing the city’s carbon footprint by generating biomethane from marsh gas. This marsh gas, produced in the digestion tanks at the sewage treatment plant at Hamburg docks, is used to generate electricity for the installation’s own use as well as being upgraded to biomethane to be fed into the city’s natural gas grid. After the first biomethane plant reached its limits, HZI was commissioned to build a second one with significantly greater capacity. Given the maritime environment, the HZI installation is also designed to fulfil special corrosion protection requirements. Overall it can meet the heating energy needs of around 5,700 homes - all climate neutrally.
