This shows the durability of weatherboard with box-corners and scribers, when they are maintained properly. A good roof and guttering deflecting water from the foundations is key, as well as paint every decade or so. Great video!

Absolutely love your channel. As a WW2 history buff, I love to see all the areas and artifacts left behind. Your level of respect that you have for the locations you visit and the passion you have when narrating is awesome. I think the most awesome part of your adventures is the fact your son is with you, learning from you and building memories he will never forget. What a set of very well preserved German barracks, so clean,and they looked lived in still. Makes a change from just the foundations. This site is amazing, so well preserved. That gun looks like a Russian 76mm anti aircraft gun, but I could well be wrong. Thank you and EE for finding this place, and for taking us along. Stay safe and well my friends

Those Barracks remind me of Cabins we came across on an Outward bound course in the late 70's up in the Scottish Highlands , Great vid an Hi for Eagle Eyes.

Just loved seeing those barracks today and happy to see that they were not destroyed. Loved the rock foundations for all of them as well. That trench system was a work of art; wow, the rocks and all...just amazing!! Just how many troops were staged there? Just curious with all those barracks, plus the mess hall. Can't forget how extraordinary that commandants quarters was with the rock columns,steps....just lovely. That would be a great place to have as a home for sure. This was amazing! It's hard to believe that the barracks and mess hall are still there. Seeing that huge gun was a treat! I'm impressed and pleasantly surprised how extensive the tunnel system is and how it was built. Simply astounding. I'm so pleased all of this is still there. Take care and stay safe. 💖💯

Great site HH, That the barracks are still in prime condition is unusual. The whole sire is really in good condition. Now the gun at 18:00 is a Frankenstein. The base carriage looks Russian, the net section is just set on it, the pivots are on the base carriage rail. The gun and recoil dampeners not set into the middle elevation frame. First round fired would have been interesting so long as I wasn't in the pit with it. Great video work even with the miserable weather. Great job both of you. Stay safe and well on the next one.

Thanks guys for braving that horrendous looking weather! It was just so cool seeing those barracks looking just like they were so many decades ago. It's always great to see such slices of History preserved, and still in use. Just loved that Commandants house. Those twin stairs were very impressive. And you can see why they chose that location for the guns. The view over the beaches and out to sea was amazing, and it definitely dominated the whole horizon. And I loved how the trench system was protected by the wire barrier, to stop people and animals from falling in. It really shows that this area is well looked after, and the curators really care about it's preservation for all to see. That gun was certainly a bit of a Franken-Howitzer. The top part looks like an early Soviet 7.62cm gun, mounted on the carriage from a much larger German, or captured, gun. An interesting mix, but still, a great way of showing people what they could have expected to see when that location was operational. Thanks again for persevering through that rain and wind! WOW! Outstanding video. I don't comment often but I always 👍! "Living" history is so rare. I'm so glad most of it is still there. Some people all over the world thinks if you destroy history it changes the outcome some way. History never changes. It's what we do with the present that decides our future. The architectural designs at this location look better than some built just 10 years ago. You sincerely impressed me today. You're a great father, you're teaching your children well! Looking at all these videos I can hardly imagine all the stones needed to make all these buildings, trenches and bunkers. The commanders house has thousands of stone just in the walk way. Plus, it is all so well built, flat, no jagged edges. Always amazed at that

Wow, original buildings without all the paint. Really great to see. I will also point out that if those were 15cm guns, then the big squares on the way to the gun pits were for the shells. 15cm is a rather large round. Thanks for taking me to see what WWII barracks really looked like.

Good afternoon from Syracuse NY USA brother and everyone else thank you for sharing your adventures in history

That is so awesome that there are still the WWII buildings there! It would be so great if they would convert one of the buildings there into a museum building showing what it was like during WWII! When I came in the U.S. Army in 1987 there were still a lot of WWII buildings left on bases, mostly barracks, that were now used as HQ and administrative buildings. There were some that were used as temporary lodging for units coming to the base for training exercises and I stayed in some of them. Stayed in one in late 1992 a few blocks from the barracks that my dad lived in when he was in the Army in the early 1950s. Only a few of those buildings now survive as museum buildings. Some have been setup as they would've looked in WWII in the entire building op part of it. Old coastal forts here in my state that are now state parks, they've done that in buildings that are now museums. They've setup part of them as they would've looked like during their days when they were active. Thanks for showing us this site!

Just amazing expolore. They look as though they were built last week. A tribute to the people that built them, was it a mix of local labour and Todt labour? They made good use of the materials supplied to them, and stand proud for a hundred years. Thank you as ever for bringing us along with you.

Some many structures still there for future generations to see. So happy to see this location is being cared for. Did they have a hospital at this location or did I miss it in the video? I really enjoyed the trenches and tunnel systems. The Germans had to be masters of building locations like this. I hate the weather conditions weren’t favorable but it shows just how dedicated you both are to bring these historic locations to us.

Again very well done, those barracks, so well preserved, just shows how well made the Germans made things and still do. When I was hospitalized, my physical therapist told me I could do exercises, I put on german marching songs, was moving to Der Panzerlied, my nurse walked in saw me stomping around. Asked what was I doing, Der Panzerlied mien frau hilarious, I blew her wig off.

That gun looks very much like the Howetzer I trained on the ones we had were 105mm that one from a distance looked like a 90 to 100 mm bore size so about the same

The building by the flagpole was likely the HQ building v a barracks. Your administrative folks and the commander would have offices in there. Lord knows the Germans love paperwork lol. The mess hall is L shaped. The smaller leg of the L would likely be the kitchen with the longer part the eating area - also maybe used for recreation after the meals. I've been in a number of mess halls laid out that way. The funny thing to me is how long these barracks have lasted in that environment. The locals have maintained them well. Great trip! The top of it looks like a Russian dual purpose 75mm cannon. Used as an anti tank cannon and for ground artillery. The bottom, or carriage may be the remains of a German 105-155 mm Howitzer. Fascinating buildings.

Great location again, christmas tour is soo good :D (apart from weather). One thing I like to do is go and find the location you are at on google maps, and I ended up finding info on the gun... i won't link as I know you didn't mention the location, but the barrel is a Russian AA mixed with a French carriage Canon de 105 L modèle 1936 Schneider EE is getting super good at English now.

Extremely windy and rainy explore that was. Again, thank you for braving the nasty weather fronts in order to show us real WW2 hhistory HH and EE. The original Barracks looked in really good condition. Do they ever let the public access the inside HH? I think I saw Hans peering 👀 outside from the one of the windows also, EE. You should have asked him to join you. The staircase was exquisite leading up to the entrance of the officer in charge's quarters. I could actually imagine them sitting at the top of the stairs having a drink and relaxing in between battles. I too wonder about the people who once occupied those historical sites and their personal histories. Nice looking mess hall. The German shelter was well camouflaged and sturdily built. What an intricate trench system. Extremely well protected. The Germans definitely meant business. The Russian gun did have rather big wheels. Most likely it was put there after the war. Still a neat WW2 artifact. It was probably best that you didn't stay up near the firing control bunker as you might have been blown off you two. Thank you for another interesting explore. 💕
