With an area of around 100 hectares, the former Nazi Ordensburg Vogelsang is one of the largest building ensembles from the National Socialist era, alongside the former Nazi party rally grounds in Nuremberg and the Prora seaside resort on Rügen. Like most large Nazi buildings, it was never completed. But even unfinished, the complex shows that it was a political building. The architecture of power at that time, which served the self-representation of National Socialism and clarified its claim to power over people and nature, can still be seen today.
The permanent exhibition “Destiny: Masterful Nazi Ordensburgen between fascination and crime” is the only exhibition on the history of the three former Nazi Ordensburgen. With a variety of text, video, image documents and objects, it provides an insight into life in the Nazi Ordensburg and the “fatal attraction” of National Socialism. In addition to Vogelsang as a place of glorification of contempt for humanity, the exhibition also takes a look at the occupied territories in Eastern Europe during the Second World War, where several hundred former "Ordensburgmen" became perpetrators and accomplices in National Socialist crimes.
The permanent exhibition begins with the chapter “Leaders for the Führer State” and makes it clear in the introduction that it was primarily the NSDAP’s lack of personnel that led to the creation of the Nazi Order Castles. Who were these people who came here to be trained? Did they see themselves as masters? What ideas did they have and could they have said “no”? In a total of 11 chapters with titles such as “Elite Claims and Subordination” or “Body Cult and Masculinity”, the exhibition provides clear information about the origins and meaning, architecture and use of the Nazi Ordensburg, but above all about the people who were trained here. in order to form the ideal image of a “new German person” - a “master human being” from them.
