I didn't even make it to the church. I found a 'church staff' outfit and changed, then guards wanted to frisk me so I went back into an apartment hallway and dropped all my gear, including a mine that blew up when I moved. So yep, I failed.

That wasn't a heart shot. Your heart is on the left side of your chest, while he shot the right.

That is actually only kinda true. The location of the heart lies between the right and left lungs, and behind the sternum for the most part. I say for the most part because it is slightly to the left, thus the reason you can feel your heartbeat on the left side of your chest, but the organ is more or less in the center of your chest. Though where he was shot doesn't really matter as long as it is near the heart. Snipers are actually taught to shoot in a triangular area between the nipples and the chin when going for body shots. This location is abundant with major arteries and vital organs, meaning surviving a rifle or a pistol round to that area is very unlikely.

So, I'm a bit of a Hitman novice, but I know that the games emphasize variety and improvisation. Is there a sniper play style option? I think it would be really cool to grab a rifle and hide out in some tall building. Maybe not the most fun way to play, but it would be nice to have the option.

There is the sniper option and they actually purposely made nice vantage points throughout each map. Only thing is, is that you have to unlock the sniper for each map, by doing the mission multiple times and in different ways to accumulate points for the sniper.

You can go to the planning screen and start the mission elsewhere than the town square :) And with other weapons like a sniper rifle

I've said it before I think, but I wish Hitman(2) had randomly generated, slightly easier targets. So you could essentially play forever and get new targets each time. I know the game has custom targets people can make. But I've noticed they're always too hard or too easy, sometimes even joke levels. I want to be able to choose how many targets I want, and have the game pick that many people at random out of the NPCs in the level. They wouldn't be as hard as an Elusive Target, or even the main story targets, but they'd be harder than some of the super easy custom targets. And it'd give you a reason to play essentially forever. On a different topic. I love how Hitman games are laid out. Like, you can just improvise your way through a level, completing it even if you're not great at stealth. But the more you play, the more you learn a map, and the more you learn the best ways in and out of places, as well as where items and disguises are, and where easy kill spots are. And if you repeat the same targets, you learn their patterns. It's like any game, where the more you play the better you get. But in this case, the whole game is based around that idea.
