For everyone that questioned if i teach how to tackle i do heads up every year and teach form every day its up to the young man or young women to do it if they dont do the drill right they are pulled from the drill and if they cant do it right also the game. I record so i can show them what they do wrong since some kids are visual learners thanks for everyones comments kerp them coming!
At my high school we did tackle drills but the coaches never taught us the right form. so lots of kids would just lower their heads and try to blow up the other guy. Good job for teaching how to tackle and not just letting kids hit each other like other coaches do.
When I was a freshman, I got a major concussion doing this drill because one of my teammates (huge kid) drove with his helmet against my helmet... I remember seeing flashes (stars). Never was the same after that hit.
Your concussion is exactly what happened to me, although yours sounds like it was more severe, sorry to hear that. I just felt like I was drunk the next few days.
This used to be my favorite day at football practice in pop warner. Hitting day would let you know who was really physical. It's what taught me to run as fast as I could, get low and put my forehead in their chest while popping up and scooping their legs at the same time... It's how I became a linebacker with the most tackles in my state as a junior before I got arrested. I loved this "up the alley drill" as we called it.
As a player for 15 years including college and 17 year coach of 11-12 yr olds, this is the most BS drill you could do. Football almost NEVER has people running at each other at full speed from 9 yards head on. Players get hurt for no reason and it does not simulate real game tackling or ever running. This is a coach's ego in full shitty form. Angle tackling is much more effective and is how 95% of tackling is reformed.
it's great hearing the adult coaches saying "this is going to hurt!" before the kids hit each other. i'm sure the same level of adult leadership helped them get a job making $25k a year
I’m a firm believer that not a single thing was gained here. We might like to think it makes them more tuff. But being prepared, and strong will do more for these kids.
When you’re a high schooler doing two a days and the heat index is 110 and the humidity is 100% and you got mosquitoes all on your shit, I wouldn’t blame them for being mad xD.
I agree no excitement. Our practices got lit because it was who's the baddest. Who's the hardest man. I think some cte came out of it but I wouldn't change a thing
Wow, getting old.. we did this 29 yrs ago freshman year..brings back memories.. I think we called it the tunnel of love. I was a Qb and the Free safety lit me up.. coach said, go warm up QB’s…😂
Tcola For reallll like after homeboy got knocked down at 0:30 his teammates should have been there to help him up and encourage him to keep going and you got this, not laughing there asses off on the side line. Gotta work on Team Building Skills for sure.
XGN RIFTY my football team is just like that very toxic always yelling at you when you messed up a play never encouraging you to become better everyone thinks there the best
@@user-zc4ly5tt6j That is not (despite what many think) coaching. Don't "tell" them....show them. Even at the HS football level (where I coached for over 35 yrs), we still have to show them. Kids don't listen to "talk".
Reminds me of my friend linemen who always went heads up with in tackling drills. Great times to the Albino Fowler. He taught me how to run hard and lower the shoulders. I remember when he picked me up and dipped me. My ribs were in pain. Hands down the hardest hit I ever felt.
Ricardo Sanmiguel What u mean?!? U mean that helmet to helmet hits are good? This drill does not teach how to tackle this is just them hitting each other
@@annstewart8881 you have to be physical I'm guessing you have never played football before. This drill is where shit was solved. If you and some dude had beef this is where you proved it.
Rugby player and NFL fan, from Europe. I thought this was going to be a horrifying Oklahoma style drill. However I’m really impressed by this. Mostly great form, head to the side, tackle with the shoulder. You could make most these tackles in rugby, without pads, and be safe. If I had to suggest an improvement the tackle at 0:47 was slightly head first. May just be the camera angle. The tackle that was too upright you can’t tell what his form would be like so I’d want to see him get bend and tackle shoulder first. Good drill, well run, massive props to the coach.
I remember my first full contact football was peewee, before we began I was so excited then we got to experience hell week and that wasn’t so fun but I was an active kid so it wasn’t bad. Then came full contact and I remember I spent the first few days TERRIFIED lol, didn’t know if I could cut it...then I got super pissed in Oklahoma drills smashed some kid good and didn’t know how to feel, felt bad....then everyone was super stoked on the hit the coaches were sooo proud and I learned this is a mans sport and you have to sadistically destroy everything that opposes you and THEN it’s fun lol. Part of becoming a man was my first thoughts BE A MAN👊
Our coaches called this drill the "twilight zone". Forced helmet to helmet collisions to "toughen us up". Half the team would walk away from this drill with minor injuries, or splitting headaches. Great way to launch developing kids into life with potential life long chronic damage. But at least they're tough!
@@chrismcbride4839 Depending on how heavily you weigh anecdotes, I've experienced these drills first hand. The last two hits someone got their bell rung. Helmet by one, shoulder pad by the next. It's all semantics anyway when the bottom line revolves around your brain slamming into your skull. Head to head tackling drills has been proven to be objectively bad for anyone, especially children.
@@chrismcbride4839 unfortunately you don’t need to be hit in the head to be concussed. If you get hit in the body hard enough (especially unexpectedly) you will sustain some whiplash. When your head swings around your brain is in there sloshing in your skull. I’m a fan of the Steelers. I absolutely love watching games. However CTE is debilitating, and I feel sorry for the guys who take the hits.
This is the old school Power Alley drill. Illegal now in some pop warner leagues. But I believe drills like this and the Oklahoma drill are the only thing that can get the kids ready for full contact that will occur in realcgames.
I’m all for big hits, but save them for the game. Have them lay on their back, head to head to start instead of around a corner into a sprint. Just asking for unnecessary injuries. You don’t have to run full speed into the other player to teach form. I think this coach could using a little coaching.
When I was in middle school our version of this drill we had to lay on the ground with our helmets pointing toward each other and our feet away from each other on our backs. One person had the ball. When the coach whistled we had to hurry up stand up turn and either tackle or try to run through the would be tackler depending on which person you were. Lol fun stuff. I remember every time I had to try to stop the giant running back star kid (I was a year younger than the rest of the team but same grade and skinny) I would throw myself at his legs and wrap him up mostly by tripping him with my body but always earned a massive headache for my troubles. But hey I got to be the starting safety due to my speed and willingness to sacrifice my body for the tackle at all costs. 🤷♂️🏈
yup..if you ain't have the genetics...use got to be crazy tough...as you can tell by my grandmer...I ain't be having the genetic thang...but I'll kill ya without blinking...lol
You can see that a lot of these kids look apprehensive about tackling. Coach is doing a great job at getting them acclimated. As they get older and more experienced, this drill will be much faster.
Damn I remember this drill in high school so vividly. This kid Kyle and I were always last in line, he was a quick little bowling ball and I was the tallest, strongest defensive lineman. I can still feel the crown of his helmet hitting my shoulder and every week we’d go back and forth beating each other. Some weeks he would get too low for me to run through him, and some weeks I’d have to basically lunge at him as ball carrier just to stop his force coming with a low center of gravity. We called it death alley
Whoever is reading this, I wanted to say I hope you have a great day and that God loves you so much that he sent his son, Jesus, to die on a cross for your sins and he rose again from the dead three days later. God Bless! ✝️🙏🏼⛪️ And also, He doesn’t want you to go to Hell but he wants you to go to Heaven with him but you have to be Saved. How do I get Saved you might ask? Here are the steps below on how to get Saved! 1. Confess to Jesus that you are a sinner and ask forgiveness for your sins. 2. Believe that God sent His Son (Jesus) to die on a cross for your sins and that he rose again from the dead 3 days later. 3. Ask Jesus to come into your heart and your life and for him to be your Lord and Savior forever. 4. Build a Personal Relationship with Jesus by Praying and Reading the Bible daily and Live for Him Forever. I’m Praying for you and you are loved!
Ditto. This drill was always an injury - most likely a concussion - waiting to happen. Yeah, let's get 2 players going directly at each other at full tilt and see what happens. What could possibly go wrong?
The final practice before the regular season games started I dislocated my knee... This was my second year at highschool. I always loved watching football and I was so excited to start playing. It led to bigger problems and I missed all but 2 games at the end of the season. I played CB but was out of practice and barely played. We missed the playoffs and I never played football again and have a limp on my left leg
At first glance it looks like they're all dropping their heads and going into the tackle with the crown of their helmet but as you see it slowed down, you can see that it's proper so well done coach
Where did you play ball? Even in pop warner/pee wee we were always taught never to lead with your helmet. Bend at the knees, shoulders squared, head up. And this was like twenty years ago, before all the extra precautions for safety
love this...in my state we called this "bull in the ring". a bit different but same premise...last two dudes standing...I was 6' 1", 185 lbs in high school. was always one of the last two dudes left in this drill...the other dude was 6' 4" 250lbs...he went to USC... I did a 4 year stint in Chino...funny how things work out...I wonder what ever happened to gary...?
Damn I miss coaching lil league...@ 1:10 perfect form, head up & to the side, ran through the target, separated ball carrier from the ball..... #FLAWLESSVICTORY #FINISHHIM #FATALITY
I remember this! I played for Stanton Raiders in OC. "Cat in the Alley" was definitely just a practice coach's make you play for their entertainment. Absolutely no skills come from doing this. Lol but it was fun!
it’s so weird the difference between games and practice i played running back and linebacker and during games i wasn’t thinking about the hit but at practice hit for me was how i told them i quit
Robert Robbins if this is 10u I got made respect for your team. I play high school ball, having to teach kids not to stick your head into people’s chest. My coach would love you. We have to teach the basics, which forces us to waste time we need to not be last in our division. In 1A If you want to know the best in our division it’s a team called nanih wayia. Have one of the best 14u
I always hated playing against my own team, I played safety and before big games the defense would play the offense in a practice session, if the defense sacked the QB or intercepted the ball that would be a point, if the offense scored it would be a point. I could never find myself to whole heartedly hit any of the offensive players, considering I had a close bond with everyone on the team as my dad was a coach, it was hard for me to hit them, how could I potentially hurt my friend, I think others could relate, it's harder to play against your own offense than that of another school.
seems like yesterday but it was 1980 I was a beast coach put me at fullback but I wanted to be a linebacker so I played both, probably explains my psychotic behavior as a 50 year old.
Dude people who dont understand how tough this drill is don’t need to speak about them standing around it’s banned in quite a few places cause of injuries and it hurts to run at someone full speed and tackle or be hit so doing this every other minute would seriously hurt people
Arrrrggghhhhh at the end Lolol man how I miss these days good coached football practice is the best therapy for kids hands down leave it all out on that field!
I don't hate because I grew up an amateur boxer but I just don't feel comfortable anymore watching good young men get bashed up. Still gonna like and sub tho. It just gives me anxiety since I've seen many young men get hurt catastrophicly. I know they accept it and love what they do but I'm old enough to know what it does to you later. The crazier the sport the crazier the injuries. My respect to these young men and the coaches 🙏. Just remember to leave something in the tank for when your my age gentlemen.
My favorite drill is something we call coach Genos. You place 3 cones on the left about 10 yards apart with Dbs 1st Lbs 2nd and lineman 3rd laying on their backs then you place 2 cones on the right about 40 yards apart with rbs wrs and tes ready to do a 40 yard dash. Coach blows the whistle 3 guys on their back get up and go stick the guy running the 40 and the guy running the 40 you get 1 move and you have to lower your shoulder on the next. Coach Genos best drill ever.
