FL Gator alumni here… the way the kid slammed his bat to release his adrenaline and emotions of hitting a HR in such a big moment is totally fine in my book. I think he had enough composure to understand that while it was a big hit in a big moment, it was not a walk-off game clinching hit (yet). Good stuff! Go Gators!
I think the fact that he looks at his team, and is legit in the moment, so I think it's fine. He didn't watch it go in the box and then do it. It seemed really organic and celebratory with his team. That's the difference for me.
coach should have benched him for a week, not joined him. the coach is supposed to be the one setting an example for these young kids. what a joke. get the coach and that player out of the sport for life.
@jhanks2012 I hope this is sarcasm!? These are kids playing a kids game, it should be fun. That was a kid having fun, not showing up the other team. Grumpy attitudes that everyone should be a robot when playing a kids game is so ridiculous to me. You can argue the coach was out of line, but the kid was just being a kid who was excited on the moment.
@@truekingofthejungle9038 no it's not sarcasm, i think it was highly inappropriate, unprofessional, and downright offensive. i think the fact that he acted surprised he hit a home run speaks for itself. by being humble and running the bases in a professional manner he'd look like a much better prospect and he might even make it look like he expects to hit homers some of the time. this is a professional sporting event, not a pickup game of stickball in the street. celebratory acts are okay but he crossed way over the line. that being said you are entitled to your opinion on the matter. we can agree to disagree.
@jhanks2012 it's that attitude that is killing the sport and why it's "boring" to a casual fan. If you can't even make the exciting parts of the game exciting it makes a slow movi g game without much action even more drab. I agree when dudes are pimping HRs in the battles box and eye balling the pitcher rounding bases, but this was not that. In those cases the batter wears 95 next time up and it squares itself out.
Replaced Jomboy? Yes quick with some lip reading, but they really are two different styles. Jomboy is more lip reading with entertainment (though he has gone more educational on some videos) while Matt is more educational / technique. I personally enjoy both for their unique approaches.
I played enough baseball and hit enough home run’s to know this is stupid behaviour. This is a problem not only in sports, but in life. Hit the home run, round the bases and prepare to do it again. Act like this is part of what you do. People need to quit throwing themselves in other peoples faces. The arrogance astounds me.
Did you even watch the video? This kid wasn't in anybody's face. He was celebrating with his own team. Almost every other sport in the world celebrates their points and excellent plays. But for some reason, baseball is full of over-sensitive sissies about it.
bingo. this is the same character type that will whine and cry and act SUPER upset with himself when things don't go his way, as if to say to everyone "I'M REALLY NOT THIS BAD, I SWEAR, PLEASE BELIEVE ME" couldn't have put it any better. when you hit a homer, shut up round the bases and prepare to do it again. if you make an error or strike out or some other big fail, shut up and prepare to do better next time.
The kid that hit the homerun was 0-6 in the game and gives his team the lead in extras, so I think it was purely emotion in the moment. He never looked like he was trying to show up the other team. The pitcher that lost on the walk off actually was served some karma and should've been tossed the inning before when he struck out the last hitter of the inning and started chirping directly at him.
the kid must suck to go 0-6 and it shows. no wonder he was utterly surprised by his own homer. he needs to grow up and stop making a mockery of himself and the sport. people that hit homers moderately often do NOT act like this when they hit one.
I’m glad they didn’t ejected him but he was definitely up against the edge. I would have whispered in the coaches ear at the end of the game (if they won) that the next crew might not be so tolerant of his well earned enthusiasm. I personally think that rule needs a strong revisit.
I’m from the age where humility goes a lot farther than bragging. I’m against celebration antics and dances in all sports, during the game. Modest celebration at the conclusion of a victory is alright by me.
Millennial here and totally agree with you. These younger kids need to learn it's not over til it's over and to stay more grounded. But my generation and onward is just all about status, boasting, and outdoing everything and everyone. It is really getting pathetic
Same for me. I've never been one to get carried away. I was always quiet and focused. I saved the smiles for after the game. In the Army, I really, really hated false motivation. I preferred the quiet professional approach. But I get it. I have no issues with others showing their excitement so long as it's not antagonistic. Dances on opponent's logos, pulling out phones at the goal posts, that's just showboating and unsportsman-like in my book. I loved the Barry Sanders approach.
I'm typically really conservative, in the fact that I don't usually like stuff like this, but that was a clutch play at a clutch moment. It's ok to get excited and he didn't direct any if it to the opposing team. He's fine. No big deal.
Indulgent move… he went too far and it hurt his team. Playing to the fans is its own sport but it isn’t THE sport. I’m not sure why the coaches were tossed other than what you said. Given the obvious crowd conditions, everyone knows how it works….push the umpires a little for a small advantage, it gets allowed; but push too much, gotta intervene and exert control. A moment like this reminds that “little pigs get fat but hogs get slaughtered”.
You can celebrate without equipment violations. I know college rules can be different, but they need to be taught now instead of when you get to the majors.
Agreed. And more importantly, since 99% of them will probably never even sniff the majors they need to learn self control and have an ability to comply with rules and standards before they get out into the working world.
I'm sick of the bat spikes. The coaches need to bench players that do that. When did the coaches stop managing their players? Do they not have any power over their players? The kids from fsu did it against UConn even worse and it's just ridiculous. Needs to be automatic ejection. It's just getting out of hand, no one in the history of baseball thought this was ok.
Wow. I asked and i received. (This was the same game with the epic catch from Cannarella). There is so much more to unpack here. Cam was ejected in the regional last year simply for jawing with another player. This year, earlier in this game Jack Crighton was ejected for taking issue with a cheep shot shove on Nolan Nawrocki after a collision (and subsequent shove) with megastar Jac Caglianone. Somehow Crighton was the only player to get bounced. Then, with the Alden Mathes' go-ahead HR in the 13th, they were 100% going to eject him too. The BS story about how they could hear Jack Leggett yelling at them from the dugout over the roar of the crowd is laughably absurd (that's the reason they gave for ejecting him, by the way. He didn't come out of the dugout until after he got the ejection, and then only to the point just outside and in front of the dugout). Anyway, one they bounced the two coaches, no way they were sending Alden packing too.
I'm a Gator fan and watched the game. If there hadn't already been an ejection earlier in the game and warnings to both teams I don't think the spike would have even had the umps discussing it. The coaches were warned and got what they got. The biggest problem I had with the umps is nobody knew what or why the ejections happened till after the game.
Yes, these kids should be coached to be less aggressive in displays like the kid here. Having said that, the kid should not be rejected because the slam happened in front of his dugout not the opponent.
I'm glad the kid didn't get ejected, but if you believe in karma, then you could say that he got what was coming to him by losing after such a display.
Even after watching the game and watching this video I still have no idea why the coaches allowed it to get to a level where they ended up getting ejected when the umpires didn’t even eject the player. What are they so mad about? Nothing even happened to the player. You’re in the super regionals almost making it to the CWS and you completely let your team down as the head coach and are MIA at the most critical point of their season. Strange.
I'd be more accepting of the umps saying, "we warned him to shut up & go sit down, but he refused, so we tossed him." The rest of that BS needs to get on up outta here.
Old school here. Bat flips alone are so far beyond belief, let alone bat spikes. Look at some of the greatest players back in the day. Doing amazing, historical things, just rounding the bases and shaking hands in the dugout with their teammates. Like the amazing things they did were just part of their job. That team gets pitches in their earhole the next time I face them. Of course, if I still coached today I'd be in jail.
So your reasoning is just that we should have players act the way they did "back in the day"? So how about we also go back to no individuality: no names on the back of the jerseys, no necklaces/jewelry, no sliding mitts, no eye black, no wrist tape. Times change, societies change, people change. Sports are entertainment. If a sport is boring, it eventually dies. I say let them celebrate & have fun as long as it doesn't disrespect or taunt the other team.
This is the kind of enforcement that makes people soft. The NCAA has also put the umpires into a tough spot for maintaining such strict rules because they've taken the feel away from the game.
I personally don't care for excessive celebrations. I think it lacks sportsmanship. But I also don't complain if the opposing team does it. I do what I do, you do what you do, and we move on.
This is why baseball isn’t as popular as it used to be. And it’s a shame because baseball is such a great sport. Let the players show emotion and celebrate. As long as it’s not geared toward the other team, so what if players celebrate a big play
No ejection on the bat spike as it was towards his dugout directed at his team however...this is a very unsafe way of handling equipment. A bat getting spiked like that represents a safety hazard. Imagine the scene if he spikes the bat and he injures himself or a teammate. No, I am not ejecting but, I am telling the coach, "Coach, let's not have anyone bat spikes, please. That's dangerous and someone could get hurt. If it happens again, the player will be ejected and this is a team warning."
There was no explanation of this during the game. I thought the whole thing was unnecessary. The kid was celebrating a huge moment with his team, for his team. It seems like umpires have inserted themselves into the game narrative more often this year than ever. As an umpire, I always understood that it’s not about me, it’s about the game. If the umps hadn’t gathered to discuss the celebration, none of this happens. Shame.
I mean here’s the thing from my point of view. I personally don’t have an issue with it, however with that being said I’m not the one making the rules. If you are going to eject a player for doing it it shouldn’t matter which dugout he was facing when he did it. You have to be fair, and college baseball has a bunch of stupid rules for excessive celebrations or whatever and it’s gotta be evilest across the board, either you can do it or you can’t, irregardless of the dugout the batter is facing, but again, that’s just me. Either make it a rule that he can do it or he can’t, and that’s it.
I wouldn't say it's "totally okay" but I do agree he didn't need to be ejected. If he was my kid I'd want him to have a teensy bit more restraint. But definitely not ejection worthy
When will this nonsense stop? It’s not about you. Hit the homer. Touch all four. High five your teammates and sit your a$$ down on the bench and cheer the next guy up. All this, “Look at me! Look at me!” BS is just one more thing wrong with team sports. It’s now become about the individuals, not about the team. Justice, or karma, was served in the bottom of the inning.
First, 17 SHOULD have been ejected. Previously in the game, there was a dust-up with benches clearing and a player from Florida tossed for leaving his position on the base paths. Thus, the teams had already been warned for shit like this. However, the umpires exercised their discretion and choose not to eject. Fine. (Ironically, had he been ejected, everyone would have been screaming that in a game that important and close, the umpires should stay out of it...) They have that ability according to the rules (remember those? the guidelines the teams are supposed to play by? Too many people don't seem to, but bat flips are specifically covered in the NCAA rules if anyone didn't know; I digress). What happened after this is truly bizarre and can only be described as horrific coaching. The FORMER Clemson coach (I'm still scratching my head as to why he's even there) decides to run his mouth about a decision that FAVORS his team (or at least, run his mouth before any decision is made), and gets tossed, then the HEAD coach, who should have been in control of both his player and the other coach decides to one-up the stupidity. Fans seem to think that coaches getting tossed is a great way to get back at the umpires, but that is a beyond stupid take. The umpires remain on the field and the coach leaves, unable to actually COACH his team. The coach then serves a suspension and the umpires don't. How in the hell is that getting back at anyone? At any rate, Clemson deserved to lose this game and a sensible AD would fire this guy. He isn't earning his money sitting on his ass in the locker room. I'm still at a total loss for what happened here: it was the FLORIDA coach who should have been pissed that the player wasn't run. Frankly, it is easy to see why Clemson isn't going to the CWS: like Tennessee in 2022, they have a coach who is an emotional wreck and his team feeds off that. Its the coach's job to control all that and he can't control himself.
I think the celebration went too far. It’s kind of like dancing in the end zone. I think you need to act like you’ve done it before. I believe celebrations have gotten way over the top recently especially when there’s still a lot of baseball left to be played.
Can you do a segment on wat do the umpires do with a bat when the opposing manager ask them to check it and thy take it out of play. Do they measure it, weigh it, x-ray it, check for corking?
If im clemson id just let him go. How stupid to get yourself ejected in an elemination game with everything on the line.....when youre team just went up. Terrible example hes setting for the younger players
I know in MLB, throwing equipment will get you ejected (ask Bryce Harper). Not sure about college but usually the rules are tighter in college ball than in MLB. If the "throwing equipment" rule is in college, then yeah he should have been ejected. Can't start making exceptions and then try to enforce the rules later. Either enforce the rules or get rid of them.
So if you’re good, just act like you been there before. No muss, no fuss. You drop one yard, be like - “Yeah I do this for a living and just trot the bags.” Confident but not a show boat.
Bakich was calmly talking to the umpire when he was thrown out, he then got his monies worth. They never showed why the other coach was ejected. There seems to be some cya done after the fact.
Unacceptable the batter Should’ve been ejected from throwing the bat like that that’s a no-brainer but instead the two head coaches had to get involved I’m stupid is that
Can a college football player spike a football after a touchdown? I haven’t kept up with college football the last few years. And alongside that, A bat spike significantly more dangerous. I personally would put this in the gray area for over the top celebrations. And it doesn’t matter if it’s in the heat of the moment. Many sports fights are in the heat of the moment. Players need to learn to keep their composure. Inciting the crowd ejection was BS though
I think the bat flip culture in high school and college is getting a bit ridiculous. I don't have an issue with bat flips in general if you're running down the path and you flip the bat. The stand there, watch the shot, stare down the opponent, launch the bat stuff is getting out of hand. If you want to spike your $500 bat off the ground go for it. But on the other side, if you are going to be a tool when you hit a bomb, I would expect, at the very least, the other team is going to plunk you when they have the opportunity.
I think it’s probably OK but I’m not basing that on any guidelines that I know of. More common sense. But there should be some guidelines/rules. Otherwise a sufficiently off target one of these will hit an opposing player, an ump, a ball boy/girl, etc. Particularly for the latter it’s probably a crime or at least a civil offense.
Ballplayers are punks these days. The fact the ncaa created rules prohibiting this proves it's a problem they want stopped. Never saw legends of the game tossing bats or streaming and yelling after striking someone out.
The bat spike is sort of problematic and could be called un-sportsman conduct, the sort of stunt that would not be allowed in MLB. Basically, there is a right and a wrong way to celebrate. Fist pumps, jumping in the air, and yelling things like "LET"S GO!" are acceptable ways for baseball players to celebrate a big moment in a game. Spiking the bat can be viewed as disrespectful to the other team even if it is done in the direction of the player's team which is the case here.
I felt so bad for the florida pitcher here. I believe they said hes a freshman and he had to wait through this entire clownshow in the top of the 13th...in a critical game....and let his arm cool off. So glad florida walked it off after this
I never understood this idiot rule. A pitcher can pump his fist and yell and react wildly when he strikes out a batting threat but has a batter react, and he can get ejected. If they want to stop batters from expressing themselves, then do the same for pitchers.c
Toss looks ridiculously stupid when you lose the game. Don’t spike the bat and Florida probably feels deflated. Spike the bat and I’m sure Florida noticed. I’d also notice the coach doing his stupid “F’ Ya!” garbage as he walked in front of the mound. Did it make a difference in the game? Dunno but I can say it certainly didn’t DE-MOTIVATE Florida in the bottom of the inning.
I played against Clemson and Coach Leggit …they are an excited bunch and a little cocky for my taste but they do win a lot…not a fan of the HR celebration craze going on in todays game …if this was a walk off I would feel differently but a lot of game to play and now you look foolish because you lost
Bekich IS a legend. However. in this case he ASSUMED his player would be ejected and started bitching when he and his coach didn't have to. Inciting crowd if they don't enter the is WEAK! My belief, not fact, is Bekich had to find something to bitch about once he actually got the word his player was still in the ballgame.
Times change & societies change. Sports are entertainment & have to change with it. If a sport is boring, it eventually dies. I say let them celebrate & have fun as long as it doesn't disrespect or taunt the other team.
We are way too sensitive in today’s game! Keep the umps out of the game! All the new stupid rules come from the top and that is mlb! Rob Manfred is destroying the game of baseball!
So it’s ok for fans to harass players but a player can’t celebrate what might have been the biggest play of his life? I doubt the opposing team is full of wimps who get their feelings hurt.
Don't blame the umpire here. This is a new rule this year in college and it's a black and white no room for interpretation kind of thing. I agree it's dumb, but blame the people who wrote the rules and not the umpire forced to enforce a dumb rule.
@@stratbaseballman nailed it….blaming the umpire is a sport for spectators. Players are invited to head to the bleachers if they forget that important detail.
Why is baseball so sensitive? All this because of a bat spike? Thats like getting tossed from a football game for spiking the ball only ive noticed football aint this sensitive & im not even a football fan.let players celebrate their moment how ever they want.
Too old school for this stuff. I guess First football and it leaked over into baseball. I personally think you should have a cooler like in Hockey to help fix these things there is not enough testosterone in the boy/men any more. I feel like let Ventura and Noland have some time together after stuff like this than break it up and let’s get back on the field and play ball
YES, He ShouLd Have Been Ejected ;-- You Can CLearLy See Two °BaLL-GirLs Sitting Not Too Far Away & If The Bat Were To Have Taken An Awkward Bounce & Hit One Of Them Or A Fan In The Head & BadLy Injured OR KiLLed Someone There WouLd Be • "0" • Commenters Defending His Actions & Condoning Such ReckLess & Dangerous Behavior ! 😮
