Hitting and Forearm Rotation, How it works for Pivot Driven Hitters

A lot of misunderstanding about how the forearm rotation and pivot rotation work in a hitter's protocol. Forearms and wristcock must work in unison with the pivot rotation. Once mastered, say goodbye to a timing based golf swing!

Best instruction ever. Wish you well. I’ve watched this video several times. I wish I lived in the area, so I could take a few lessons to be a hitter. I’ve been playing 55 plus years, but I still feel like I could improve with your help. I hit a lot of greens in regulation to the point, my short games is just ok and putting needs a lot of work. Perhaps, I will work on that when I retire. All the best John. 🇨🇦💝🇺🇸🤷‍♂️

@@gaoxinglangblog True story here... I lived in Las Vegas for a few years and gave Roger Waters a golf lesson in the Crown and Anchor pub. He's a golf nut, so rather than talk about music, he was much more keen to talk about his other passion... golf. I showed him the ghost ball drill and told him to widen his stance and he asked me about his left arm and I showed him how to get better extension there by using the right arm. A memorable lesson and fun to have a Watney's Red Ale with the mastermind behind DSOTM.

@@lagpressure I can imagine why he wouldn't want to talk about music, just think about how many times he had heard all of his songs through the recording process before the albums came out, then after the albums were released doing concerts which would pretty much always involve playing the same 2-hours of music over and over again, then the media interviews which would always ask the same questions. My uncle told me Nick Mason their drummer just likes collecting vintage cars, and also has lost interest in the music. In addition to teaching Roger about golf you probably would have been qualified to give him a guitar lesson, I saw your air guitar on the BE BETTER GOLF and it is clear that you have legitimate guitar ability and knowledge, that may surpass Roger's limited guitar ability.

I was a swinger for years and when I was younger and more athletic could time my wrists/hands/forearms with decent results but still struggled with consistency. Fast forward 35 years and afte a long layoff from golf I no longer had that hand eye coordination to make the swinger swing work. I've been slowly changing to a more body rotational swing and this method is perfect. One of the best videos I've seen to explain the basic components of this swing. Went through every single club in my bag, off the tee, off the turf, and it was magnificent. Thank you so much for the video and program.

Good information and a great job explaining the details. I am currently in Module 1and have been practicing hard. I played the other day and had my best ball-striking day in recent memory. When I concentrate on the 4:30 line into impact, I hit the ball straight. Being that I am very new to this, sometimes I forget about "actively" rolling the wrists and the shots still go pretty straight. I was wondering how much forearm rotation was actually needed and you explained it well in this video.

Thanks for this, actively hammering down makes sense for this hitting method. It's probably not so much of an issue for upright 'swingers', but a flat-plane 'hitter' who leaves this out could entirely miss the ball, especially one who is changing from being a 'swinger' and therefore doesn't have this action ingrained. I could imagine that a lot of golfers would abandon this method entirely after a few such border-line fresh airs/skulls. The transition to this method is definitely not for the faint hearted or those only willing to tweak, this is an entirely different method. However it's probably one that minimises lost balls even in transitioning to it, after all if you miss the ball or thin it, you usually find it.

Excellent content, Johnny E.. IMHO there are only two three golf swings to learn from Jones', Snead's and Hogan's. And Hogan's swing is the compilation of Jones' and Snead's with his own mastery of the clubface control and post impact acceleration of the pivot. I believe after my own 35 years of "serious" golf, if you focus on mimicking Hogan's post impact techniques; stabilized arms exiting left with strong and fast torso rotation, and his dynamic positions you can learn to strike the ball like Hogan. You should be keen to watch DTL videos of Hogan and carefully watch how his right arm while remaining bent disappears from view very quickly post impact. With his torso turning fast/accelerating he "hides" the left and right arm from view. It's not easy by any means but it will deliver the most consistent strikes in terms of trajectory, curvature and distance.

@lagpressure
@lagpressure 2 года назад
I prefer the term forearm rotation into the strike for teaching because this is what the student is going to feel predominately... because the uncocking is really "given" or you will miss the ball completely (above) If I were to teach "hammering down on the ball" I would have students doing that from the top of the swing and it would be a disaster. It's why I order the ABS Modules in the way that I do... it's not accident or haphazard. We have a very strict and direct plan to learn and coordinate things.

My belief, is to take it back, with the upper body rotation and to take it through the ball, with hip rotation. You need to have the clubhead low, with an upper body rotation at p2, in order to have a level shoulder rotation, through the downswing and impact. Upper body at takeaway and hip rotation, on the downswing, is the only protocol which will achieve this 😊

Mr. LagPressure, I have followed you for years and have the modules so thank you for this additional information...but I have a question what shaft flex i.e. stiffer or weaker works better with this swing all things being equal?
@lagpressure
@lagpressure 2 года назад
Stiffer shafts will always give you better control... also, if you are hitting properly and holding shaft flex into impact, then the transfer of power stored kinetically in the shaft is far more efficient transferring to the ball... which means more distance. Swingers use looser shafts and rely upon the kick of the shaft... which brings in a big timing element into the strike.

Hi John, I have a question for you about turning on the hinge door. I personally play with Moe’s swing (knew him) but can perform elements of Hogan’s when I turn more/better on backswing. Does it makes sense to you if I use my legs and footwork as described by Hogan both in his book (lead leg is still bent at impact with weight moving to outside of foot allowing hips to continue their rotation) while running to the target with my trail knee (as Hogan apparently mention to Jody Vasquez in Afternoons with Mr. Hogan)? This at least for me assists in exiting effectively and left shoulder moving faster. Just wondering about your thoughts on this? Thanks, David Hill/PGA of Canada

Great info,I have a question when I try this I come throught with an open face with the lead coupled wrist I hit the ball with open face which produces a high week shot. If I try to turn more I just close the face too much. If I try to come around with level shoulders feel no power as I can't seem to get the club to strike the ball. I will have to try to explore this more as this seems to be a consistent way to strike and forcefully hit the golf ball.

@seankenny100 Год назад
Hi John, great video. Can I pose a question, you talk a lot here about using mostly body rotation to square up the face pre impact but you also talk about needing to save most of the torso rotation for post impact ? Obviously the less torso used pre impact would mean a greater amount of forearm rotation required would it not?
@lagpressure
@lagpressure Год назад
Ideally, the torso waits, then accelerates quickly. The torso acceleration will contribute most of the closure. Forearm rotation is also important, but really facilitates just getting back to the ball. Most golfers are far too quick with torso rotation on the downswing, and then too passive with torso rotation post impact.

If there is no timing involved in this swing why did Hogan hit thousands of golf balls every week? I know he had injuries to overcome from his auto accident but no one beat more balls than Ben. I would think that if this swing was that consistent and productive then that would have helped him to not have to hit so many balls to give his body a break.
@lagpressure
@lagpressure 2 года назад
I think that depends upon expectations. I don't play much anymore... but when I do.. I can still shoot 65 with persimmon and blades on a good day without grinding 1000's of balls. As far as Hogan, I can't speak for him... but I would think he wanted to explore the possibilities of human potential at the highest level.... golf related. I remember asking Moe Norman what his best round was and he said "Six Pins"... meaning he hit the pin 6 times in a round. I wasn't sure I believed that at first.. but when I was really ontop of my striking I had a round at Madera CC where I hit the pin 3 times in a round.. so I can see now how Moe might have hit 6. Point being... maybe Hogan felt he needed to practice that much to get into that kind of ball striking on a regular basis. He was also inventing stuff then... cutting new ground etc... I'm just teaching what those guys were doing..so the knowledge doesn't get lost. They were much better strikers in those days. I played at the end of the persimmon and balata era.. so I know. I'm not just dreaming nostalgia. When I won on tour, I missed only 4 greens in four days. Never under 30 putts and shot a tournament record 17 under... and never on a par 5 in two ..... no two putt birdies. Different game then.

Wow! No timing in a golf swing that includes a wide open face and body rotation alone cannot square the face up, so how to you account for the face too open or too closed....? Since it can't be the body rotation as we know from your own mouth that the face will still be open maybe 10*. Any normal brained human knows there is timing involved because if there wasn't you would be a God and never miss a shot. If you fat one or thin one was the pressure transfer not timed correctly or some other mechanical fault ... there are so many moving parts in a swing ...timing has to exist. You can see that your forearm rotates when you ulnar deviate your lead wrist also the wrists are the weak point in the swing they can move in many directions called circumduction so to have them ulnar deviate and palmar flex on purpose just at the right moment there has to be timing involved!! You're the one that said hitters uncock the lead wrist on purpose so there has to be timing of when to do that...it's so obvious! It's actually swingers who according to you get the benefit of C.F. that they get the uncocking automatically...lol! I said from the start you can't square up a wide open face by body rotation alone and the problem is with it that open it stops people from using their body rotation, it is the exact opposite of what you say. A main reason Hackers don't pivot is because they have an open club face and the body stalls so they can try to square it up using arms and hands and shoulders!!!

If your right hand was open , the palm of your hand would be facing skyward it's actually facing the target. If you want to teach this stuff then prove it with full body sensors that measure every angle of every joint that's important in the swing. A "spacial awareness" issue, or using the proprioception of your nervous system to judge where and when to to hammer the ball is just another way of saying "timing" , so there's that too. At 9.55 when he says we can save our torso rotation look at his clubface when his is not trying to to sell the open clubface false feel.

@@aau240 I don't need to sell anything about this.. Hogan, Snead, Nelson, Peter Senior, Moe Norman sold this to everyone years ago. Once you are able to dismiss them, then this conversation can continue. Until then, you can keep struggling with your golf swing.
