Today we find out if the Gorilla-Era TPX Air Attack 2 can live up to the hype! Many claim that this bat is even better than the legendary Eastons of the late 1990s (Redline, Reflex, Z2K).

The "chamber" is the inside of the barrel. They did pressurize those with nitrogen gas, much like you can fill your tires up with nitrogen instead of air.

Yeah, and temperature has a big effect on pressure. If it somehow was still pressurized, hitting with it on a hot day could make it an absolute monster.

So a couple things to break down and you should pin this comment as the video has some information that needs to be corrected. A. Variable drop weights existed in the late 90s depending on the league and state you were playing in. The air attack 2 debuted in 1998. There were drop 4 and drop 5 models depending on preference and league regulations. There is no early 90s air attack model. B. I have opened the blue air attack from the previous year and it has a little orange nylon bladder inside the bat. I still have it and can send pictures. I haven't cut open an air attack 2 but it's strange that it doesn't have it in there. I'm not one to defend corporations, but I can 100% confirm that the blue air attack had a balloon inside. Some friends told me that the bat itself was pressurized but I can't confirm. Pressurized bat would snap in half like that though so it's possible. C. I've said it before, but the late 90s TPX bats lose their pop much faster than eastons because they were not designed with durability in mind. No bladder or bat after nearly 30 years and thousands of g hacks would be anywhere close to peak performance. They were cheaper to make and replace. This is somewhat true for all 80s and 90s bats, but especially for tpx bats. You'd need to make a new bladder to simulate the old performance. Any Air Attack you use today will be at least 4% less hot than it was when it came out. Why specifically 4%? Because when the pressurized chamber/bladder design was introduced, that was the test result from TPX's testing facility in Ft Worth Texas. Evidence was part of a dispute between TPX inventor/whistle-blower Jack Mackay, Jay Bhatt and Hillerich and Bradbsy in what I call the BESR War. On top of this, thin wall alloy bats that tread the line on durability are way more sensitive to temperature changes. As soon as I saw the fog from your breathe, I said "oh no, he's gonna crack that thing". Didn't expect it to snap in half though. I recommend a retest in warmer weather with a head-to-head of the eastons and throw in the c555 platinum as well as the og dark green omaha (the first omaha ever). That would be one hell of a video. Testing what truly was the best of the 90s

Yes, they were pressurized with nitrogen. One really hot day, back in 1999, we knocked the cap off a new AA2 in batting practice and it sounded like a .22 rifle shot. They ended up getting it replaced for free. I see some people saying it had a bag or something inside it, but I don't ever recall seeing that. You couldn't have any objects inside the bat, so that's unlikely. No, it didn't have any kind of valve to pump nitrogen inside it. They were filled using a very common process, similar to how telescopic rifle scopes are filled. You put the bat inside a vacuum chamber, remove all of the oxygen, then fill the chamber back up with nitrogen until you reach the desired air pressure. You'd then seal the bat with it's end cap, remove the remaining nitrogen from the vacuum and fill it back up with oxygen at normal air pressure, and viola! You've got a nitrogen filled bat. BTW, you can't look at the inside of the bat and say, "there wasn't any nitrogen" anymore than you could look at a blown out tire and say the same.

The air attack was the first and only expensive little league bats my parents ever got me. All my friends had the Easton reflex c.core, I picked out the air attack since it was newer and no one had it. Led the league in homers that year but by the end of the season my bat was starting to look like a cricket paddle. It was going completely flat on one side, was still within its warranty so went to the store and they sent it back and replaced it with the air attack 2. Started doing the same thing sooner and got a mean crack in it about 3 inches from the cap. Still crushed with it.

Growing up my best friends brother had the Air Attack 2 while my best friend had the Easton Reflex and I had the Easton Redline (and he was a good friend of mine, too, really, but he was a few years older so he was like an older brother figure to me, too). I always loved his Air Attack, but after time and gaining power and goung back and hitting more, i think the Redline had the most pop. RIP Jack-O (my buddy/best friends older bro passed back in 2010 at just 26. Still miss him today).

Okay, the bats at that point were pressurized. That was why a lot of those bats marketed it. They were super hot out of wrapper, no joke. But over time they lose that pop from use and even just sitting there. If you bought them used, the bats would look completely fine. Yet, they would feel really dead. Because whatever they used to pressurize the bat has been used up. With every hit and day that went by those things had some pressure escape. Those bats don't age well unless put into storage in like perfect environments to keep the pressure correct. Air Attack line was notorious for breaking. All good. Was an absolute banger, even in the -3 version back in BESR version too. I think I got some old footage of me swinging it too. Will, if you can get a hold of the ORIGINAL Rawlings Plasma Liquid Metal -3 BESR from mid 2000's (Color is Silver barrel with green lettering on barrel and green handle). I can say it will be a super fun bat to swing. Definitely one of a kind but super fun to swing. Sound is crazy too. You might be able to find the Gold version of it but not sure if it's different.

During the 90's era the Louisville Slugger TPX was known for being a more balanced bat than the Easton's. Alot of the Easton's of that era were slightly end loaded like the Reflex Extended. Both were crazy hot bats!

Wow it was almost like you were inside of my brain. Lol I was just thinking that my two bats were the air attack too, and original TPX that was white and black from '96 that I forget the name, and my Easton reflex. The reflex always felt heavy at the end and that's the bat we would tape up with the big knob on the handle to almost balance the bat and make it come through the zone quicker. It probably didn't do anything but that reflex had so many home runs in it, the air attack was a good bat but it had nowhere near the pop that I had with that Easton reflex. People would bring around the red lines and the voodoos but the reflex was the bat for me, 32 -5

I was in high school during this era of bat and boy was it an adventure. My childhood friends STILL ride me about a bomb I gave up to the eventual number 1 pick in the draft. 360ish in the gap, up a hill, over a tennis court. It was one of those 'yeah okay he did that' moments where I just shook my head. Same dude hit another bomb in that game that was a line drive that got stuck IN the hill. When I wasn't pitching, I played third. I preferred playing in a bit. Was playing another first round pick that seemingly hit my glove as soon as it hit the bat. If my glove were off an inch it would have hit me directly in the chest. My younger bro preferred hitting with TPX bats. He broke on within a week. He was 12. That's how fragile they were.

Nitrogen pressurized chamber sounds like a marketing scheme. When I started playing softball in a league we couldn’t use composites but we used a Mizuno Orange Crush that said it was made from Banzai aluminum. We used Dudley SB12 softballs which at the time were mush balls and to hit one over 300 foot fences with aluminum softball bats was very difficult and only a few of us were able to consistently hit home runs. With the Mizuno Orange Crush softball bat it hit those particular softballs 30-40 feet further. The Orange Crush was definitely not aluminum.

The bat splitting in half was the best case scenario for this video. You were able to address the 30psi nitrogen gimmick by filming the inside of the barrel. I owned a few of these back in the day and for some reason thought there was a frickin balloon in there. Must have been dugout mumbo jumbo that people made up. If I recall correctly, a ball player died due to being hit in the head by a ball that was batted by the Air Attack 2, which hastened bat regulations and resulted in BESR standards being officially employed.
@bearnecessitits

Filming the inside of the barrel confirmed nothing if they pressurized the entire bat. Maybe the reason it blew up was because it was under pressure.
@MyYTaccountName

@@bearnecessitits I agree, I meant that it proved to me that my idea of it was incorrect. I always imagined a balloon to be in there for some reason. It could have been pressurized before it was sealed.

I had a skinny barrel drop 11.5 air attack back in the day and I cracked it open years later once it was useless to me, and it definitely had a pressurized air bag in it. More like pool float material though not a stretchy balloon. Not sure why this bat didn't have it, maybe the drop 5s didn't have them for whatever reason.

Balance and swing weight was the best. As for the Louisvilles, those c405 alloys performed better when the barrel was dented. Add 30psi of nitrogen then dent the barrel and the pressure went up to 40psi as they were sealed.

I'm so old lol I was playing pony 13 and 14-year-olds in '99 and 2000 I started high school. I remember buying this bat my freshman year of high school the 32-in 29 oz drop three because all of my bats were dropped five or more because I wasn't in high school yet. I used to swing a 32-in 25 oz reflex and that bat was around for years even the kids on my team I coached years later would use it. But I had the black TPX air attack 2 with orange and gold on the font and 9th grade. I used that bat in Colt League, high school, and even my sophomore year when I moved to Bakersfield California to play on their 'big league' all star team. (15/16 y/o)high school travel team. I hate all of these dead sounding composite bats that look cool but never perform the way the older BB core bats and others did. I believe around 2008-2009 was when you started seeing these DeMarini composite bats because people thought that's before were too dangerous. I remember all of those bats going on sale at my local equipment store because in a year they weren't going to be legal anymore. So I ended up getting that air attack bad for a third of its price due to the change.

I took the cap off to replace it and inside was a yellow air bladder with a hose and valve sticking out towards the top, I would assume this is the pressurized portion they were selling. The bat is so old that the glue around the edges of the bladder is cracked, so it definitely doesn't have any air in it now. This bat has alway been a destroyer in the cage and in games. Glad to see it was more than me just thinking it was a great bat. I want to say my dad spent somewhere in the $300 range back then, which was a ton of money for my family.

It’s true. There is an air bag in the middle of the bat. I busted the end cap off mine in high school and found it inside the barrel. I had the original Air attack. Brand new bought it for 99.99

Real tech I worked in a pro shop in the late 90s I swung these in games and sold them…we displayed a barrel cross cut to see the chamber

@baseballbatbros It is true that if they have an air chamber, this one no longer has the bag... I have 2 still with their bag or air chamber. Surprising how it broke. Try an airstrike, but you actually have an air pocket and possibly get to 115 or more.

If I know anything about air pressure it’s that people underestimate how much power 30 psi can actually be. A bat with that kind of pressure in the chamber could shoot the knob like a bullet, explode itself into shrapnel like a hand grenade. No way they could ever actually sell that

Will, is there any way you can do a video on the 2001 Easton Redline C-Core C500? I used that bat in High School and would hit nukes even off the end of the bat, that thing was red hot

This is a longshot to get a response. I love all Ur demo's. I notice you are using a Rapsodo 3.0 I am on the verge of buying the R3.0 Unit. A, at Rapsodo answered every question. Would you recommend Rapsodo to a serious Baseball player I just can't find much information on social platforms and want Ur opinion how you grade Ur Rapsodo 3.0. Thank You.

So the redline bat also came with a loaded end that maximized the sweet spot but was legal as you could buy it from sports authority that way back then cost was like $400 but I would be interested to see you test that one

You should check out the TPX Armor from like 2005 it was what i swung in high school 33/30. It had a weird coating on the barrel of the bat i know you guy like trying weird stuff out. idk what exit velo would be with it but i use to high some scorchers with it. I finally busted end cap out of it last year hitting with my nephew.

As many others have said, the chamber IS the barrel. But yeah, the nitrous AirAttacks are hot as shit. I took a defensive swing and hit a frozen rope just shy of 400ft when I barely weighed 120lbs in HS.

I FORGOT I HAD THAT BAT. The black one. It was sick. I had that and the Z2K. My whole little league team swung them lol I was born in 87. I would have sworn I got the Air Attack in like 97-99?

Used the Air Attack 1 my senior year and then right onto the Redline in college. It was a fun time, but sucked playing in on 3rd on defense.

Guys, I would like you to try a bat from a couple of years ago. I think it is one of the best bats. I would like you to compare it with the Rawing Icon, the bat is the Eaton maxum ultra.

If anyone is from Pennsylvania, a guy on Facebook marketplace is selling a pristine, nearly brand new Air Attack 2 32/27 for $35. I live across the country and he won’t ship it. The damn thing has only a few scratches, a perfect original leather grip and the sticker on the bottom still looks brand new.

I had the air attack 2 -12 my 13 year old little league season and let the league in homers. My dad had to return it twice for replacements due to dents.

Hey Will another great video as always! I was wondering, what cameras do you use for your different angles? I was thinking of getting into similar type videos as yours doing bat reviews and home run derby’s. I uploaded my first video trying to hit a 330 foot home run the quality got messed up on the video though and I’m trying to figure out why because normally the quality on my phone does just fine, but I wanted to get some other angles too. It would be great if I could get some feedback on the video, the channel is WeeklyBaseballClips. Thanks!
