HIV is a retro-virus which means it uses RNA to make DNA. Clinically if you have HIV with a CD4 count of less than 200 cell/mm ^3 , you also have AIDS.

tee h He explains that its because its very expensive and not as quick. They use the Elisa test because it can be done in a clinic setting - in and out - and if negative they're supposed to recommend a follow up in 2-4 weeks for an additional test. Hope this helps :)

HIV NAT(nucleic acid test) or "viral load test" as he calls it, is expensive and is not used in clinical setting (dr office or hospital). It's done in a specialized testing lab. And has to be performed by trained personnel on specialized instruments (not just anyone can do it) doesn't really take very long to perform the test itself. Its'just getting your sample to the lab, getting it tested, having your result sent to your dr and then your doctor contacting you, 2-3 days maybe. If you are high risk for HIV infection, you can ask you doctor for a HIV NAT test which can detect the infection earlier than ELISA/EIA would.

The elisa/eia test is usually automated while the western blot is not: it requires a technician to both perform the test and interpret the resuts. in addition to the the elisa/eia(which screens for the hiv antibodies) a HIV NAT can be performed. The HIV NAT is a nucleic acid test that screens for the HIV rna/dna directly so you can detect the infection earlier than you would with an antibody screening test. At the blood bank we use both of these test, this reduced the risk of transfusion related infection. If either test (Anti-HIV or HIV NAT) is reactive/positive we then perform the western blot for as a "confirmatory" But the primary reason the elisa is used first is cost, and complexity.

Without drugs. about 10 years is referring to if the disease if left untreated. With modern treatments, you can live way beyond that. Check out publications by the CDC and WHO
