I am an 86-year-old second generation beekeeper. I have, over the years, had hives that refused to go through an excluder. When I removed the excluder, they immediately moved up and started packing honey in the super. I do not know why, and it does not happen often at all. Possibly, for some reason, maybe the bees are a bit larger??
@jonclemons1421

I took off my excluders when the flow started and they finally did move up into the supers.
@JeromeBeeFarm

I’ve tried no excluders before and the queen gets up there and fills them up with larvae, and then they are targets for the dreaded wax moths.

It’s a late bloomer😂 It might be a good idea to wash that suit it’s probably covered in alarm pheromone. Good video!

Hey Mark. I thing that may be the issue, but I needed those supers on other hives that are overflowing. I’m sure you’re right about the jacket. I usually wash it after harvest. It’s extra tank and sticky at that point. lol.

You said that you had storms incoming, I read that bees sense a low pressure front and can make them irritated, I try not to work my bees in low pressure conditions which isn't easy in England😩

That’s probably true. They generally don’t like a really cloudy day. Thanks for watching.

Hey Patrick! Can never pass up a good "Airplane" movie reference. lol The pissy hive was very strong and out in western oklahoma, where they were having a drought. They had very little food and were very defensive. I took out four frames of brood (baby bees), and added a honey box to them to weaken them so they wouldn't swarm. Unknowingly, I had gotten their queen when I pulled those other frames out and took them home with me. Being queenless and messed with recently, they were off the chart angry, and my brother in law went out there 3 days later with his lawn mower and got attacked. He jumped off the mower, ran to his truck, and drove off with them stinging him. lol So, they said, please take these bees away from there, so I brought them home to my place. They have calmed down a lot since then. There's a video 3 or 4 back that shows me inspecting that hive out west that day. It was CRAZY!. LOL Thanks for watching!

Everyone does it their own way. To try to not roll the queen I always pull one of the outside frames and sometimes 2, them pry each frame into the open space before pulling it up. Then I do the opposite putting it all back. You are less likely to have the queen on the outside frames.

I found a swarm and I moved them into a hollowed out part of of an apple tree once it got dark. I sang Amazing Grace as I moved them lol! One got into my glove and I thought OH SH*T! It never stung me😮. I was told by many that they would move on when I first found the swarm, but they never did so I moved them to keep them warm into that apple tree. It's been almost 2 months and they are still there! I can now see a comb! I have no idea what I'm doing, but I'm doing it right I guess😅.

@tasmedic

Yeah, I have also learned the hard way not to mess with my hives after dark. My bees consider disturbance at night a major predator attack and, moreover, they will head straight for any nearby source of illumination. If that light source is your head light. then you are in big trouble!

D, I had several hives be like that this year. I drilled a small opening in the front of the super(per an old farmer) and the bees started using the hole and filling supers. For some reason they did not want through excluder. I also had two hives last week that are two deep plus 4 supers high and both queens went through two excluders per hive. That is women for ya!

I’ve flipped over the inner cover before and a few will start using that. I’ve also put a slotted shim in the middle. Old farmers know their stuff Lol. Thanks for watching.

Double whammy on that hive. If your goal is to have calm bees and make honey, smoosh her & don’t lose one second of sleep. When you have that many hives it’s too hard to alter your management style for each hive. If she’s not doing what you want, replace her & find one that will. I want to enjoy working my bees & not suffer through impromptu apitherapy.
@JeromeBeeFarm

I hear ya, but man I have a hard time smooshing a queen. I’m curious how they are working that deep I put on there. Thanks for watching.

Put your gloves on over your finger loops and pull them over your sleaves. Stops those loop stings and they dont try to tunnel under the sleave.

Hey Spider. Yeah I liked the sound of the genetics and development of those queens. Not sure what he’s got going on with the shipping. It’s like he charges each instead of the package. Maybe some other time.

Thanks for the Pro Tip about nighttime bee work. I think you need to "prime the pump" a little with your super. I would try putting a medium frame down below and let them build it out and then move it up to the honey super to lure some of the bees from down below--just a thought.

Hey Gecko. If I didn’t need those supers elsewhere, I would have done that. I have other hives with no space at all. We’ll see what they do with that deep box. Thanks for watching.

I have one hive that is "pissy" as well. All seems in order. I took 10 stings last week. (Never a good time.) I have no idea what their problem is. Meanwhile, my other hives are as gentle as they come. 🤔

The Bee movie was so painful to watch. Clearly hive 14 didn't read the chapter on filling honey supers.😅 If it's a genetic issue I'd consider not making splits from that hive in the spring next year.

Hey Dijon. Yeah and on The Beekeeper they kept saying there’s one killer bee that takes out the queen when she’s bad. lol Um thinking maybe they just brooded up later than the other hives. We’ll see what they do with this deep box. Thanks for watching.

Darkness of those almost black gloves dipping down into their hive pissing them off maybe? Its in bees genetics to attack dark objects (like bears) etc. Good strong hive though with a Queen laying up a storm. If you have some good light colored Nitrile gloves maybe wait a few days or week and go into the #14 hive with white gloves and see if there is a difference in how they treat you?
@JeromeBeeFarm
@JeromeBeeFarm 3 месяца назад
They were just edgy. The gloves don’t bother other hives. Not good conditions for an inspection with the weather. Thanks for watching.

Wow, after all those stings that hive better give you a lot of honey. Great news that you are in a better position hive wise than last year. Could be that you are aware that they could starve, and you manage to feed them a little in time. The pissy hive no.2, that didn't want to go up, had a lot of brood/larvae, could you not have used those larvae to put into the queenless hives for emergency queens? Could you also not have put the empty super in the middle (under supering)? Thx for sharing.
@JeromeBeeFarm
@JeromeBeeFarm 3 месяца назад
Hey Kennith. Yeah it’s shaping up to be a good year. Yes, those brood frames could be used for queenless hives, but it’s getting a little late in the year to be requeeng from scratch. I could have under supered, but I would want excluders in both top and bottom to keep the queen out of there. Thanks for watching.

I've got one hive doing about the same this year. She's lying like crazy, but the girls were back filling just as fast in the frames she was on. They had plenty of drawn-out comb, but they keep back filling where the brood is? This is my second year beekeeping any suggestions?
@JeromeBeeFarm
@JeromeBeeFarm 3 месяца назад
Hey Royal. Sometimes it helps if there’s a frame up there that has some honey in it already. If you have another hive, swap one out. Or put it below Tim they start working on it and then put it back up top.
@TheRoyalHomestead
@TheRoyalHomestead 3 месяца назад
@JeromeBeeFarm I started the second deep with a frame of brood up in it. But this queen never moved up there or from one side in the bottom brood box. I pulled her out and put her in a nuc the other day. I started watching her on a frame, and she kept whipping her antenna idk. i think something is wrong with here. I was looking back through my notes. This hive had some deformed wing virus that cleared up after a mite treatment last fall. Now, they have built 4 queen cells in her hive, so hopefully, they will do alright and replace her on their own.
